I guess they thought that this melody would add on to the darkness of the movie the same way this melody was used in A Clockwork Orange and made it even more disturbing. But here it just doesn't work and this trailer is horrible, and the cheesy narrator only makes it even more horrible. But in their defense, I don't think that any trailer would really work for this movie. You have to see this movie as a whole.
criterion is hilarious. seems like a poke at the joke trailer for the shining (use of the thieving magpie as most recognized from that other kubrick film might be the tip off).
Some have commented that this trailer does not resemble the feel of the film. But, this may not be such a bad thing. If you watch the trailer for "Revache" you will have a good idea of much of the story as well as the feel of the film. Perhaps, too much (though it is one hell of a trailer!).
@pickpoche this trailer is a piss take with brio, with "Revanche" you have a balanced contrast to the atmosphere, the clarinet is a spectator, like the trees on the forest trail in the film. Not like Bach's Air on G or Barber's Adagio would do the trick, but this score makes me think they were groping for a way to make a dark film with dialogue palatable to mainstream sensibilities.
Oddly enough, as I watched this trailer, the film appeared to be a bit of a dark comedy and then I realized the Kubrick used the music (I don't know the name) in "A Clockwork Orange."
urgh!! this is one of the most hideously inappropiate trailers i have ever seen in my life! it makes on of the most intense and amazing films in existence look like some sickening, twee, sacharine comedy.
there making it out to be some hilarious british romp, like four weddings and funerals, not a nihlistic journey into the human physche which it really is
Oh fucking gaaa-aaa-aaads that is awful. The thick Spam voiceover crew were probably pushed on the schedule about five minutes before knocking-off time and did it back-to-back with the trailers for What About Bob and Uncle Buck. MAGGIE!
This trailer is terrible. The film is one of the best ever made...so brilliant, unique and David's performance should've swept the Oscars that year (he was robbed). This trailer doesn't show what the film is like at all...doesn't even hint at it. If I didn't know the film already, I would not be interested in seeing it based on this at all. What were they thinking? The fan made trailer out there by Chris Nightingale is perfect, they should pay him to use that one.
Strange this - everytime i speak to someone who has seen this film, but not for a while, they remeber Johnny (Thewlis), but they NEVER remember anything about the character Sebastian Hawks (the dark psychopathic rich guy), not even that he exists in the film. Strange, as he is one of the main characters and I found his role so memorable and entertaining!
"Sophie and I have had a very interesting afternoon - haven't we Sophie!?"
Dunno about irony, sarcasm perhaps.. The trailer definitely does not hint at all towards what the film is about, and just how dark and utterly brilliant it really is.
i havent seen this movie in like two years and i have only seen it one time at 3:00 in the morning...i want to watch it again sooo badly...David Thewlis is amazing in this movie...
what the hell is up with that music? this portrays Naked as some kind of comedy. the brilliant thing abou this film is that it doesn't go to obvious measures (i.e. that terrible music in this trailer) to be extremely powerful and haunting. one of the best films of our generation, one of the worst portrayals. Someone make a better trailer and stop decieving everyone who hasn't seen this!
I'm with you. It's a very sobering uncomfortable film to watch. More about lonliness and man's isolation than anything. The film's incidental music should have been used for the trailer. It's quite useful.
I haven't watched the movie yet (want to, though), but the music (by Rossini) is featured in "A Clockwork Orange", giving the impression that this film is also another one of those "out-there" satires. But that's also a wrong impression, I suppose?
I think there are just enough dark moments used in this trailer to give the viewer the impression that this is not going to be the quirky comedy they expect. But the trailer overall could be more sinister. The music doesn't really work in the overall context.

yes the music does make it sound like a comedy.
It's far from it and probably one of the most moving touch you're heart film of the 90's.

Greg Cruttwell (Jeremy) reminds me of Egon Schiele, or one of his self portraits... very fitting for this film.

Very misleading, even bizarre trailer! It makes _Naked_ look/sound like Clockwork Orange (or maybe even Rules of Attraction) which is just nuts.
swanstep 4 years ago 2
Agreed. Rossini's "Theiving Magpie" and the editing makes Naked seem more whimsical than it actually is.
