Very good! Both "glitches" were on "flamme". I know what he was trying to do. They were not glitches, but rather tricks to engage the head voice. When tenors sob, in essence starting in head voice and then bringing in the chest register (the principal register in which men sing). By doing that little "sob" he ensured that he had the right mix.
Very impressive. There are a few mistakes, but as I have said elsewhere, this is all but un-singable. Besides, the mistakes are not all his fault: there are very few teachers alive today who can guide a student to navigate this aria, so consider that before blasting away!
Bravo maestro Giordani!!! I first saw him at he MET in year 2002 singing "Il Pirata" di Bellini (with Reneé Fleming) and heard an extraordinary voice, with lots of squillo , big sound, and brigth high notes; I am his fan since then. Bravoooo!!!!
@dopepenguin88 I'm sure you could walk out onto a stage and pop the C's out easily mimmos...maybe you should stick to just listening so you don't come off as a tool
Why don't the singers standing behind him do the chorus part?
I believe this was recorded just before his vocal crisis. Some should be able to confirm this. He sounds better today. The voice here is a bit brittle.
I like this video a lot. His technique isn't perfect, but he isn't singing that badly here at all. Yes, his C's are sharp and over supported and he relaxes to correct and obstructs those C's. All that said, I still think he does a good job on this, Is it great, no, but it's not terrible either. There were only 2 that were kinda off. Also, this isn't really his fache. He's got panache and I love it. Besides, he's singing wonderfully now.
Hey guys, I am sorry but this video to me... is perfect. I can understand any words, I can listen to all notes of the music score, his singing french is much better than Pavarotti and also Kraus, the high Cs have no problem as much people said. I really don't understand why so many critics... And, let me say, I don't like this aria, it's ugly to me, just a demonstration of virtuose, but musically poor. But with Giordani I can feel the personage intention (also with Kraus).
You can't say that his french is better than Kraus, it's not true. Actually you're right, this aria is pure technic. The best for that is... florez of course !
nice timbre but bad technique i feel like he is concentrating to much to get those c's out there and then he cracks...i prefer Juan diego Florez rendition much more..giordani is not right for donizetti
I'm very much on the fence about this video of him. There IS a lot more to this aria than the C's. Most of which he seems to butcher anyway. I'm thinking its his technique failing on him. I've sung with a few tenors much like that. Just TOO much pressure going while "covering", which accounts for his horribly sharp high c.
Giordani is always more comfortable above the passagio. When he nails an aria like Cielo e mar, there's nothing quite like the thrill he gives; at other times, things seem to coast along. He's always at his best singing with OONY. Eve Queler must turn him on, or perhaps he's just comfortable with the Carnegie Hall acoustics. The fans there are absolutely rabid about him.
In his first aria in Ernani on the MET's radio broadcast I was afraid he wouldn't get through it, he struggled so! Was better later on.
For this aria give me Pavarotti, Krasu, JDF and Rocky Blake. Let's remebember this was performance was 18 years ago, and at that time I would have said "bring it on."
It's too bad that he hasn't had a more consistent career. There are things you think he would splat on, and he'll pleasantly surprise you, and yet there are others you think there should be no problem, and you'll be shocked that they go awry. It's always interesting to see how they handle the well known arias!
he hasn't had a more consistent recording career, but he's the lead tenor of the Metropolitan Opera today, the most important opera house in the world, replacing Domingo, and other important opera houses, that's way better than 99,99% of the tenors out there.
I wasn't speaking of "recording," but of performing. Recordings can always be edited off of multiple takes. I've seen Mr. Giordani live, and heard him on several occasions on broadcasts. He has fantastic moments and then oddly bad ones. That's inconsistency. I never wish him ill will, but I'm continually hoping for him to do well, because he has a great talent.
I tend to agree with drdre. He is a great talent, but he tends to be spotty. I didn't think this particular rendition was bad at all...I thought about singing this in public once, but I came to my senses before I tried. It's PHENOMENALLY difficult to get all 9 C's spot on.
Agreed. This wasn't bad. And YES, how horrifically difficult too. What's funny is that going into a higher extension tends to work better for him than some of the other roles that he does where it doesn't require a high extension.

Possiamo dire che è stato bravo (l'aria è difficilissima) ma Kraus,Pavarotti e Flores sono di un altro pianeta.

He's not only a lyric but a spinto. It's too heavy a voice to sing 9 high C's.

but not every tenor can sing this area... and we all make mistakes too
All the great singers of this world have to learn before to do it, nobody was born knowing everything.
Like Pavarotti said.... the best singer is the one never gives up, keep trying 1000 times if necessary but never gives up until get it.
