how did you break apart the SilverMagics?

hi i tried doing the second effect uve shwn the linear one but when i click on linear it doesn't appear it changes back to solid and if it does appear to linear the two colour don't appear on my writing so is there something wrong coz i dn't know where im going wrong doing exactly what uve shwn in ur video clip

i got an effect:

make a geadient-thigny like he said, then make a bigger 1 and convert dat 1 2 symbol, decrease birightness by 35 , put it on top o da original
