I mean, Discord obviously has powers that match hers, and Luna is an Alicorn as well. It also seems that Nightmare Moon is as powerful as Celestia without the Elements of Harmony, which would explain why she was looking for them in the pilot - she wanted to control the most powerful magic so Celestia couldn't stop her.

Yes, she's younger and less powerful than Celestia. But she obviously had the juice and pride to stand up to Celestia and give her a pretty hard fight. Why would she be all childlike and weak? Especially after a year.

1. You could tell she grew up during her off-screen time. Also, when she regained her admin rank... er, I mean, Princess powers, she gained the new look.
