Music appeal is all about an individuals taste, so neither of you are in the wrong. The Beatles reached an unknown height to the music world in the early 60s late 70s (with exceptions to many other bands0. The Shins carved their nitch as the first indie band to hit top charts in the 90s. Music styles are different, but they both made a name for themselves during their time. I love each band's attributes to the art.

It is certainly based on what someone is appealed to, which makes both your arguments logical; however, to compare The Beatles with The Shins is hard to do. Each musical group has carved its own nitch, if you will, into the liking of the public. The Beatles 'reign' was in early 60s to late 70s, and they accomplished, with their music a talented height unknown, really, to the music world at that time. That's cool. They grew on me.. but anyway I was being 'serious'. ;) lyrically and musically the Beatles are superior to the shins, in mine and most of the world's opinion.
