  • I logged on here on my daughter's computer. Had to say, I was stationed aboard the Lex from '81-'85. I was on the bridge when a plane failed to release on launch and hung off the flight deck, when an airman got sucked against the cage covering a jet intake, and other accidents, when I as a BM3. It horrified me to see it then, and does now. to trivialize that with some of these comments is awful.

  • At least the pilot never felt the fire, ejecting straight down into the deck like that he had to have been killed on impact.

  • I was Airman Oscar Aguilar. I worked in V-2 Catapults and Pry Fly from 1985 through 1988. I would like to get intouch with with some fellow shipmates of mine. I also have some group pictues that I personaly took on the flight deck during down time. I would like to share these photos. Please email me if you think you know me.

  • this is the fucking adverse yaw effect....

  • @baconVader Oooka booka! Seekrit Keyan mooooslim gonna come take all yer wite wimmen!

  • a very unfortunate incident.

  • Oh Goddess...

  • He was trying to turn to his left, ended up stalling the right wing deeper than the left, resulting in the onset of a spin to the right, not much he could do to avoid the tower but he did punch out too late.

  • @wdwatts you dont seem to value truism, honesty, integrity, or anything else, because honestly, you should go out and educated yourself from both sides before you attempt to act as if you know anything

  • It never ceases to amaze me how a video of a military training accident can spark such rediculous comments from both sides of a stupid argument.

  • @Briankey1960 Ha! So you've got that republican brain disease, do you? You actually believe you're free with the likes of Cheney and Rove monitoring your every move with warrantless wiretapping. Wake up, you pitiable fool. The republican wishes only to steal from your to line the pockets of the wealthy. Open your eyes man, and stop bowing before any pig in a uniform.

  • @humanbeer , the fact that you actually believe that tells us a lot about who you are. Totally wrong for one.....

  • @humanbeer no, I actually work for a living, always have and I never mooch off the government. Nor do I expect to pay for illegal immigrants, free health care for losers, bail outs for banks who steal people's homes so they can get free money for the government. If you're going to bash politicians, at least understand what you're talking about. The democrats and Obama are the ones who are ruining this country, period.

  • @humanbeer Hateful? I am happy and make myself so with no dependency on money, some false deity or anything else. I value truism, honesty, integrity, hard work and friendship. I fear nothing and jealousy isn't even in my vocabulary. Why you started such a hateful comment thread on a video that is meant only to serve as a reminder of the dangers our military face every day, is completely beyond me. I am sorry you are so angry at something but my comments and others here won't help you.

  • @wdwatts And I'm merely pointing out that that danger is made worse by the crimes and treachery of conservative scum like bush and cheney.

  • @humanbeer Oh yes, that scum Cheney and Bush! Yes, to ignorant self-indulgers they may have seemed a little forward thinking. I guess that whats happens to one after they have been dumbed down, made reliant upon the government, and are always expecting a Tootsie Pop to be shoved up their asses! Are you and intoxicologist perhaps liberal, useless pieces of shit scumbags! Hmmmmmm, thought so!

  • @wdwatts your lack of knowledge about your own countries history is saddening. the number of people killed and wars fought before you were even born to create your so called american dream is a shameful. you live in a country where the natives were killed and their land stolen so you could live somewhere. does that make you happy? slaves were traded so you could build your country without having to pay for it. trust me buddy in america, you are the immigrant.

  • @intoxicologist Oh ya! Coming from some limey bastard that just smacks of hipocracy. Slavery, murder, usurping of others lands, why, that sounds simply British! And my mother is Cherokee, you smarmy asshat!

  • @sakoshooter48 i never said the british were any better did i? i said his lack of knowledge about his own history is saddening. i have knowledge of british histories involvement in slave trading and empire building and it is shameful. you call me a smarmy asshat.that shows what kind of person you are , not me. if your mother is cherokee then i would expect you to have more respect for people and talk to them properly. what the british settlers did to the native indians was terrible so sorry.

  • @intoxicologist Certainly you did. Your remark stated that "your American dream is shameful." I replied by calling you a smarmy limey asshat! I stand by what I said. My mother and father taught me to turn the other cheek at the inconsequentials, and to meet head on with directness and force to purveyors of falsehoods and half truths. You met the criteria for both, deal with it.

  • @sakoshooter48 ok copy and paste the bit where i said that.

the american dream is shameful as is any notion of a british dream!!!

if i am a purveyor of falsehoods then copy and paste the lie i have told?

and if you quote me it was "the number of PEOPLE KILLED and WARS fought before you were even born to CREATE your so called american dream is a shameful"

you are the one now portraying half truths by only quoting half of what i say.

  • @sakoshooter48 like i said before. calling someone a smarmy LIMEY asshat assumes i am british sailor. but that says more about you than it does me. good luck mate i hope your mum is proud of you.

  • @intoxicologist You know tox, sometimes I wonder why people go out of their way to incite when they know it will bring the wolves calling. I happen to be a very proud American, proud of who we are and what we stand for in this place we call a world. I get very tired of people constantly demeaning and bashing us when our best intentions and solutions are constantly ridiculed. If not us, then who? We have always, and will always, stand to in the face of adversity. Are we perfect, I say hardly!

  • its just my opinion based on reading many books and studying american history........ i am allowed to have it.

for me i wonder why you have decided to include this wolves coming to my door threat.

  • @intoxicologist Are you serious? It was a figure of speech and certainly not a threat. Certainly you are allowed any opinion you wish, certainly I am 'allowed' not to like your public opinion, and that being said, I am American and I have the given right of freedom of speech under the First Amendment of our Constitution. We just don't understand one another, that's all! I listened to enough American bashing at the Isle of Mann in 2007, didn't like it then, don't like it now!

  • @humanbeer its people like you that ruin this country. if you can't already tell, no one likes you. hence you have a fuckton of negative votes

  • @aNavalAviator And we're going to keep right on breeding the tea bagging scum right out of the gene pool! Ooooka Boooka!

  • @humanbeer dude you should really get out of the basement more.

  • @humanbeer WTF does an accident on an air craft carrier have to do with politics? This is just a flight accident you're being way too radical dumb ass

  • @humanbeer You ignorant moron. How about remembering the dead on Lex instead of your stupid comments. I'n sure you could care less about them...

  • My uncle mark Ballor was on the aircraft carrier on of the guys by the crash.

  • I saw this in the news years back. Apperantly according to the report, he was a black pilot attempting to land on a carrier for the first time. You can also see after the crash, a couple canopies are flying off on the left. These are from parked jets with pilots already in them and their trying to escape. There is another video of this showing the other pilots blowing out their canopies.

  • typical adverse yaw, slow, stick and pedal same side

  • Thats a sad video alright. I have a freind, a very experienced (Rtd Lt Col) F4s, F111, F15s who said "You would never get me landing on one of them things..."..

  • was this on the Midway? My father was an LSO on the midway during the 80s, i wonder if he was there when this happened, he saw a lot of guys get killed doing stupid shit like this poor bastard

  • Remind me to never go on vulture's row ever again.

  • most dangerous highway on earth so true

  • Damn! That scares me just watching it. A flight deck is one of the most dangerous places in the world. Life expectancy is only a few minutes for anyone not paying attention. So many things can happen besides an accident such as this. My heart goes out to those involved in this incident and the families of the deceased. The price we sometimes pay for freedom. RIP brothers, I salute all my fellow Vets.

  • Thank you for the nice comment. Yes, it's a dangerous environment. I flew F/A-18's off carriers and witnessed first hand how dangerous it is! Cheers, Kila

  • I remember this accident very well, We did the search and rescue for the Lady Lex. for the sailors that were blown off the ship. Happily 3 were rescued safely. If I remember right, it was the last training cruise this ship would see. That was a sad time at NAS Pcola. I salute all ya'll that was on-board during that evolution. All these years I always wondered what really happened, there was a lot of scuttle butt to sort through. The Lady Lex sure was a great ship.

  • @UncleSnaf - Thanks! I was on the hangar deck level, port side aft, on the rail, standing lookout. I'll never forget the screetch of the plane's engine. I looked up and saw the planes right wing, which, from my angle, only meant the worst. My first thought was the plane had hit a crane that was on that side, by the elevator. I was quickly relieved of watch to go back-up the firefighting efforts, which had basically already extinguished the fires. Very sad day in what were great years.

  • I spent years on the U.S.S. Forrestal. This pilot is so obviously low and slow. His only hope was to drop the nose and he raised it instead. He paid for the mistake with his life and the lives of 4 other people.

  • Ouch. I didn't know them, but I care for them. dying while trying. rest in peace.

  • Did the pilot try and eject inverted @ 20 secs?

  • Yes. He hesitated, something you can't do in Naval Aviation, and paid the price.

  • That poor bastard must have shit his pants just before he was blown out of them.

  • And what are you an expert surfrat59 at. How to such off the government like a leach, never working a day in your life except off of the taxpayers. Most of you dungs wouldn't last 2 weeks in the real world. Frickin government parasites.

  • What surfstat59, like you are the key supporter of Don't Ask Don't tell. You were bobbing up and down on your shipmate, producing seaman, when the MasterStewart came in and gave you a lesson. Douche.

  • Oh come on Megger, where is the spirit - Drone on after me. "Freedom isn't free (it is running about 1.1 trillion a year)", "they hate us because we are free", "if we don't fight them there we will fight them here", "Freedom is on the march (on of my person favorites from our alcoholic coke snorting DUI president)"..... Stick with the brainwashed program will you.

  • Liberals: The shining stars of peace, love and understanding.....

  • "83 women and 7 men stated that they had been victims of sexual assault and harassment during the Tailhook meeting"; reference Thompson II, Charles C. (1999). A Glimpse of Hell: The Explosion on the USS Iowa and Its Cover-Up. W. W. Norton. ISBN 0393047148. , p. 379380. The youngest was a 17 year old girl who was provided alcohol and had her clothes ripped from her when she was too intoxicated to react. Also, 7 men, makes the Village People singing "In the Navy" song all the more relevant.

  • I will dig it up, a 15-17 year old was given alcohol to the point of pass out, she had her cloths ripped off and she was passed down the hall way down a row of drunken "heros". If it were any other group, there would have been jail time along with registration in the sexual offender database.

  • Nobody got raped at tailhook at any age. A female officer was "groped" and an admiral failed to do anything about it, so she took it further. Justice was served.

And whatever....how old are you, 10? I'll leave your comment, but if you resort to name calling and swearing, I'll delete anymore.

Have a nice day in la la land.

  • I was stationed at 32nd St working out of the PAO. These morons don't know what they are talking about.

  • How does this statement mean you know anything. How come everyone states they had an assignment, it is suppose to mean they know all. It usually means they couldn't find a job in the real world, and they lived off of the public

  • @alkin1000 Liberal piece of crap, i offloaded in your momma's ass.

  • 1. Don't talk about things like that, that you know nothing about.

    2. Nobody raped a 15 yr old at the '91 tailhook.

    3. Naval aviators, who get selected for jets/carrier operations are the best in the world. But EVERYONE is human and can make mistakes.

I don't see YOU out there risking your life on the the most dangerous place in the world to work; the flight deck of a carrier. And yes, I DID do that for YOUR freedom.

    Wayne "Kila" Watts, USN (RET)

  • Good answer.

  • Amen to that.. thanks for your service!

  • Too bad his training didn't include the relevant fact that you eject facing the sky, not the deck.......

  • Unfortunately the navy lowered standards for the pilot of this aircraft because he was an Academy grad. So many paid for this decision; he should have never been in control of anything faster than a golf cart.

  • Hi im airman Gurley if you look close at the aircraft spotters perch you will see a person run just before the planes intial hit.that was me,im looking for any one else who was there with me,Airman Mark Lopez especially he was burned severly,he leaves in Utah.I was in V-1 division. If any of my airman buddies are out there hit me up.ITS BEEN A LONG TIME

  • ~hey boys~

  • A tragic video. The pilot, Steve, was a friend and company-mate at Annapolis. His younger brother was also an Annapolis grad and he died during the attack on the Pentagon on Sept 11, 2001. What a horrible price this family has paid in service to our country. Remember them in your prayers.

  • True. Lets hope we never forget. Thanks for your service. Stay safe out there.

  • You were steves friend?im airman gurley i was probably the last 1 to see him alive.i was on the perch right before his wing hit.if you look closely at the video you will see me run right before the wing hits. i had nightmares for years after that.i remember who died, steve, tim garroutte,Kilgore, mayo, and brian corvelle a civilian contractor

  • Did you know Mayo? I knew her as a kid if were talking about the same girl. Her father and I were stationed together in a VR squadron circa 1980.

  • I was a recruiting officer at the time of the accident and escorted a group of prospective naval aviation officers to Pcola. I showed them the damage to the Lex and the remains of the aircraft in the hanger & told them to be sure they were willing to face this. Never saw the video of the crash, heartbreaking. We took that in stride, part of the job. Now that my son is a sub officer and his gf is a stud NFO at Pcola it gives me a very sick feeling. Like us he assumed he was indestructible.

  • I was staying in Gulf Breeze Florida right about the time that happened!

    Tragic!

I was investigating the Gulf Breeze ufo sightings even got to talk to Ed Walkers on the phone. It was an eventful time!

  • true story....if i am not mistaken, this was an accident on the USS Lexigton (now retired and on display in Corpus Christi). I just happen to tour the Lexigton and I saw this accident play over and over on some monitors. I asked why. I was told that the accident happed in '89 on the Lex and Ens Steven Ponsell was the pilot. Even more sad was the fact that his younger brother (about 10 years younger) died in the Pentegon on 9/11/01attack. The Lex now honors both brothers.

  • oh fuck he ejected into the carrier

  • I remember this well. Ens Steven Ponsell was the pilot's name, and no, he did not eject, he was killed instantly along with several people on the USS Lexington. The nose of the aircraft got too high without sufficient airspeed resulting in a nasty tip stall. So sad, god rest their souls.

  • I was actually stationed onboard at the time of the accident (in Air Dept). He did infact eject from the plane. He ejected straight into the flight deck because the plane was inverted at the time.

  • Well it was just a matter of timing, because you can see in the video just as he inverts, his canopy blows downward but it does not show if the seat had time to eject before the impact in this view. What gets me is that when they told him to wave off, it looked to me like he would have been able to pass over the deck till he got erratic with the ailerons and flipped over. Very sad to watch for sure :-(

  • @StLouisEarl How on EARTH could this student pilot have EVER gotten this far without being properly evaluated? This was negligence on the part of the chain of command that should have properly assessed that student's rediness for a carrier landing. If I was in charge, I would have someone's jobs for that CATASTROPHY. I would lay 100 PERCENT of the blame on that student's instructor and the instructor's commanders. I don't care if it was an engine failure, they should have been better prepared.

  • @JetMechMA Well I suppose we will never know that answer, mainly because we WEREN"T THERE. One thing is for sure, no matter how many times you evaluate ANYTHING, there will ALWAYS be accidents.

  • @StLouisEarl WE WERE'NT THERE is not a valid response. The investigators weren't THERE. Saying that there will always be accidents is a defeatist attitude and is unacceptable in aviation. Crashes (not "accidents")...."CRASHES" are investigated and the cause found so the likelihood of a reoccurance is reduced as much as humanly possible. THAT's how it works.

  • this was in 89 it looks like 1932

  • thats sad :(

  • thats sad :(

  • We all learn from others mistakes. Every pilot looks at this and similar incidents and says it will never happen to them, until one day you're in next in line at the Pearly Gates. There are old pilots. There are bold pilots. But there are no old bold pilots. Low and slow, on the back side of the power required curve is no place to be on approach. You become your own test pilot, attempting something that's never been done successfully since the Wright Brothers invented the airplane.

  • I was onboard when this happened it was terrible. Fire broke out in the captians office. We had several civilians contractors onbaord I believe two of them were killed. I can remember as they brought one of the guys up from medical who was burnt beyond recognition to fly him off. We made a line in the hanger bay with backs turned if I remember correctly. There were alot of incidents that in 89' so many that the navy had a five day fleet wide safety stand down.

  • I remember that stand down.

  • those "canisters" are the canopies of other jets on the flight deck, emergency jettisoning so they can get out before the fire hits them

  • Yep!

  • what are those tumbling canisters at the very end? The look like identical thingees but what are they?

  • In another video angle you just see a lump of meat on fire roll across the right side of the deck where the jets were that he hit.

  • damn looks like the pilot panicked and lost his/her bearings

  • no it was a Vmc rollover. basically the pilot got behind the thrust curve, and the aircraft didnt fly any more and rolled over.

  • Nose attitude too high and he stalled it and the plane pitched over. That was one of the worst carrier accidents I've ever seen.

  • fuck =|

  • fuck!! the pilot ejected when the plane was inverted!!

  • pilot did not eject he died upon impact. I was onboard at the time Oct 89.

  • hey friend, pay atention at 19 sec....we can see the pilot ejecting

  • We were told he did not eject. The canopy may have blown off but his body was still in the plane.

  • so he tried to do it,but didn't have time, only the canopy blow up but the sit didn't got out the plane...but he tried!!

  • Yep.. looks like the plane was inverted at the time and the pilot blown downwards into the deck during ejection.

  • Were you on the deck?

  • T-2C Buckeye, BuNo. 158876, USS Lexington, VT-19, US Navy, crashed on 29th October 1989

Crash remains were in our hangar at VT-10 in Pensacola after the accident

  • I remember VT-19, they were attached to NAS Meridian along with the 2 squadrons I worked in which was VT-7 & VT-9.

  • According to a Video from the Lex. The accident happen on the Lex it was a Kingsville bird. T-2's were and have been around for years. I controlled them while I was a controller in Beeville in the early to mid 80's. They also were a front line bird for some foreign countries...LOL They were removed in the latter 80's to early 90's when the T-45's were phased in to take the place of the TA-4J and the T-2C. I sure do miss the ole days of controlling them and the fun it gave me.

  • I didn't think the T-2 was even around back then, we never saw them on the ship until after '98, because they still flew TA-4's and T-45's.

  • That was Steve Pontrell in hmm I would say late 80s early 90s.

  • Yeah, that's the October 1989 accident. 5 deaths, the pilot and 4 on the deck.

In a terrible irony I had heard that the pilot's younger brother was killed at the Pentagon on 9/11.

  • Damn that really sucks.

  • This looks and sounds like the crash that occured when I was in Advanced in Kingsville...so early '89. I believe they found that a linkage between the front and back seat throttles had been installed backwards and jammed when he pulled the throttles towards idle....if memory serves me correctly.

  • if they had been installed backwards (the throttle) he would have never made it off the carrier and into the air....

  • well, it all depends what "backwards" means. If the loop containing the throttle quadrant was looped improperly (i.e. backwards), it easily could have jammed the system.

  • @rodgers32 How'd they get airborn is that was the case? Doesn't sound right to me.

  • I don't remember.....they showed this video to us at Naval Aviation Safety Officer school when I went through. My guess is it's in the 70's.

  • when did this happen? I was in a VT squadron from 83-86.

  • What Squadron? I was in VT7 & VT9
