  • I have little to no doubt that online wizards would win if they played stu ungar in those days. BUT if stu ungar was alive today he would also improve his game probably to a point we cant imagine

  • The man was ahead of his time.

  • You have to love that young Phil Hellmuth

  • The game evolves.....

  • Anyone that new the rules back then could win lol. No disrespect to Stu , moss or any of the other guys but they wouldn't stand a chance against the online league today. Even i could have won big Tourneys in those days. Well... maybe not but still.

  • @MrJonnyboy36 no disrespect, but online poker and LIVE POKER is DIFFERENT.

IF STU UNGAR IS STILL ALIVE HE WOULD STILL BE THE TOP 10 POKER PLAYERS IN THE WORLD PERIOD

  • @sunnyboy8644 stu ungar top 10 players in the world? are you crazy? stu ungar is the best of all time, period!

  • phil helmuths analysis on hands hasnt changed since 1997

  • yea gabe im sure he remembers what he had for lunch....It was a cocaine sandwich....

  • LOL, Gabe can screw with people! Poor Stu didn't even realize it.

  • you can see by gabe´s face that this is just history in the making...

    "1997 "

  • the music and graphics of the old wsops make you feel like you're watching a broadcast that's 5-10 years older than it actually is.

  • HELLMUTH COMMENTARY!

  • If the grim reaper from bill and ted's bogus journey came to get stu he would have had to suck out something fierce to win that heads up match.

  • Stu Ungar greatest poker mind, a waste, he would dominate poker nowadays and compete with Ivey and Dwan.

  • @Koopatroopa01 i thnk dwann is down 3 million this year.. i think his time is over

  • @Sexiiimamita180 Down 3 million? His bankroll is much deeper then 3 million dollars.

  • stu ungar was a brave warrior. RIP.

  • "i don't believe anyone can beat me heads up." - stu ungar

    DAMMMMN RIGHT!!!!!!!

  • i never realised they played this outside on the street!

  • sTU COULD HAVE WON THE wsop IN 1990 and he would have won it 4 times in all, but he went into an overdose situation, Stu had accumulated SO MANY chips along the tourney that he finished ninth,he was in hospital at the time.....LEGEND.

  • the man stuey

  • @djmj811 Only 3 times? That seems very low for Stu.

  • @gamemeister27

He only played like 4 of them to start out with ... he is legend .

  • Stu Ungar was always the GREATEST, stories about him are Legion and Legnedary in all respects, this man was a true Genius who layed low the "great" players of the time for decades, 3 wsops, 3 amarillo slim super bowl titles, endless victories with his supreme talent, if only he was still with us, teaching everyone the true meaning of Poker :)

  • awesome!

  • yep sneak108, its a true story( grinchy01), Stuey was truely MAGNIFICENT :)

  • potato

  • just not the same without pocket cams

  • @junpus1776

Ahah... Lets play 1 on 1 my FTP name is tomodrank2237 :)

    And yeah

I heard people talking all over their FB wall about how you should create a account usin the promo code SPECIALS at Full Tilts web site.

I think its the recommended way if you're a beginner to start off.. They will DOUBLE your first deposit oh and a couple other beneficial perks. Sucks but its only gonna work for the first 3000 people that create an account with it

  • stu ungar is the god of poker

  • Fuck Cocaine and all the other bullshit that screwed Ungars life up. Seemed like a super nice dude and then gets involved with all that shit.

  • omg i was so scared see kaplan 1997 lol so cool post lol thx

  • wow, gabe must have been, and probably still is, a huge gambler! what did he beat stuey in 1980 with that straight over straight, 200 K? wow!

  • stueys instincts were deadly, with forensic scalpel-like accuracy he put the fear of god into his opponeNts and cruised the green felt tables like a poker shark ; hovering around and destroying the opposition like they werent even there in the first place, virtually every story about stu ungar is legendary and awe-inspiring, this man was the greatest EVER, no exceptions, no ifs ands or buts, best ever. PERIOD.

  • its so akward to see this table played without pocket cams showing the hole cards instead kaplan says "i think he has a good hand" lol

and lol at phil hellmuth commentating im suprised he didn't call 97clubs hand a donkey move and rant about how hes the best player ever, but thats probably cuz the term donkey hadn't been coined yet

  • gabe kaplan is the best poker announcer hands down.

  • @mikematij2 norman chad is!

  • @mikematij2 you ask for hands down and 31 people gave you hands up

  • @dannyoo2 ha thanks man

  • @mikematij2 He should announce it as Mr Kotter ... that would be funny youtube.com/watch?v=QVS3WNt7yRU

  • @mikematij2 I put gabe second behind ali nejad , but slightly above norman chad...

  • why does Gabe say the tourney started with 4000 people?

  • @Snailbarf He means that all the events of the wsop in 1997 together were entered by 4000 people.

  • If you look real closely, Ungar's nose appears abnormal in size. According to a biography written by Mike Sexton (Ungar's closest friend at the time), Ungar regularly sniffed a lot of cocaine and thus, his mucus membrane became damaged. Ungar would ceased a year later. Imagine how many more WSOP Main Event's he would've won had he stayed cleaned. I would love to see the pros of today take on Ungar had he been still alive.

  • if you are talking about the book "One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stuey ',The Kid', Ungar, The World's Greatest Poker Player" it is wrote by Nolan Dalla and Peter Alson, Mike Sexton wrote the forword for that book.

  • I read in Matusow´s book he watched this from the rail and you really see him in the audience :)

  • what did he say about ungar

  • gabe kaplan, best poker commentator ever

    Stu best poker player ever

  • i like gabe too..hes like a link between the genuis of ungar and the regualr people..thats whats makes a great commentator

  • Kaplan certainly and surely Stu was 1 of the best ever and for-sure THE best Gin player in History. But in all fairness, there are some great players to have come out....I mean look at Tom Dwan, he's a genuis and a freak of nature where cards are concerned. Stuey though is one of my favs and I think he's in the top 3 of all-time!

  • @massterra you say he's in the top 3 like there's anyone who can compete with him

  • john plays like a donkey and deserved to lose.

  • stu unger was a freak of nature. sick raw natural talent. no body ever played like him and nobody will ever play like him again.

someone compared Tom Dwan to Stu, it was Gabe Caplan in fact. while i do see some similarities, Stu played on a level no other player could match.

    what a fucking talent!

  • nah.. no comparision for me..stu was a genuis who mastered games in days.. dwan lost for the first couple years

  • RIP stuey...the best there ever was

  • Stu Ungar faced off against Mansour Matloubi in no limit hold'em at the $50,000 buy-in heads-up freeze out event. On the final hand of the game Matloubi tried to bluff Stuey all-in for $32,000 on the river with a board of 3-3-7-K-Q. Ungar who held 10-9, thought for a few seconds and told Maltoubi "You have 4-5 or 5-6 so I'm gonna call you with this" and flipped over his 10-high to win the pot and bust Maltoubi, who in fact held exactly what Ungar said he did.GREATEST EVER.

  • I think they reason why Matloubi and Stu played heads-up was because lot of people were saying that if Stu kept playing in that tournament, he would've won the whole thing. Matloubi and some people disagreed and said it was just pitiful excuse. So Ungar and Matloubi went heads-up 50k freeze out. Ungar won to prove it. Ungar didn't just win, he squashed him, calling with 10 high and even read other guy's cards before he flipped it over.

  • @grinchy01 if thats a true story thats unbelievable

  • @sneak108 the only reason stu ungar played against mansour matloubi because mansour won the 1990 wsop, ungar also joined that tournament but after day 1 he collapsed and was brought to the hospital but his chip lead was so incredible after day 1 that when the dealer took off the blinds and antes he still got 9th place. to prove he would have won the wsop 1990, he challenged mansour the winner of the wsop1990, and he indeed called an all in with ten high and thereby proved he would have won

  • @dannyoo2 thats some good info. i wonder why he collapsed? hes simply amazing

  • @sneak10 drug overdose, but despite the years of drug abuse every day killing 100 millions of brain cells, he still had a sharp enough mind to destroy the 1997 main event field like it was just a walk at the park

  • @dannyoo2

Imagine that .. he was born with some thing people just done have .. and that is card tell the ability to know what your opponent is holding by just looking at him , feeling how he bets , there is some much to it ... the feel he gets we cannot explain . his mother ! teached him to play cards at a young age, he was so good at it, he destroyed people at a age of 9-12 people who have played for 20 years of rum ... i mean he was so good he would tell you the exact 12 cards you hold.

  • @grinchy01 is there footage of this event anywhere? i have to see this!!1 please

  • @sneak108 no there aint footage iv found..if you look it up though in 1980 he was chip leader on the third day of the main event and even though he was found unconcious he was simply blinded out but because he was so far of the compition with his chip lead he still managed to come 9th..should have 4 wsop main events..excuse my grammer a little drunk writing this..

  • @grinchy01 way to quote wikipedia lol

  • @grinchy01

LOL I take it you read Stuy's biography.

  • 1;19/1.20 seconds in..............love it when stuey smiles, the flame of human warmth is still alite and burning in his heart, i miss this man, even tho i never had the privelidge of knowing him. rest in peace stu, we are all down here remembering you ; the tide of time will never wash his legacy away.

  • gabe was of course commenting on stu ungars "eidetic"( photographic memory) when refering to stus long term memory, but perhaps inability to remember what he had for breakfast, because that is a trivial, incidental detail that stuey would " let slip" and not remember, breakfast has no poker value, lol

  • haha, i have never heard of anyone insult Gabe. everybody and their mother fucking loves that guy.

you must be a professional asshole or something worse!

  • pffffttt....whatever

  • lol

  • lol the guy at :57 is hilarious

  • Gabe looks so different here than he does on High Stakes these days.

Great to see the legend Stu Ungar in action, if he was around today he would be massive, as big if not bigger than Ivey.

  • without a doubt!

he would be the poster child or what have you for poker today.......ivey, negreanu, hellmuth, dole would all take back seat to him

  • Gabe Kaplan looks so different these days on High Stakes Poker, great to see Stu play, if he was around now he would be bigger than Ivey.

  • They're playing outdoors, how cool is that!

  • Kaplan said they started with "4 thousand" players???????

  • yeah i noticed that too

  • Maybe he meant 4 thousand for the whole Series, not just the main event

  • Oh, yeah, he says it later 320 in the main event

  • 10 years for Stuey. 11-22-98,

  • lol this guy doesnt know what he had for lunch but he remembers the bigger straight 15 years ago.lol

  • I know! Poker players are insane, rememberinng almost every hand theyve played and who be what when...

  • he said lol first time he never played holdem hahahahahaha/ crazy

  • Stu ungar was a genius probably the greatest no limit holdem player ever and certainly the greatest gin rummy player ever but unfortunately

like so many poker players including myself he would decimate his bankroll at other forms of gambling but sadly ultimately it was the drugs that played the biggest part in his decline.

  • Yeah, it's really weird how someone like him can be such a genius in certain forms of gambling but let themselves fall prey to others... damn shame.

  • Show some RESPECT, viewers, you will NEVER see a player like Stu Unger!

  • gabe has hair:| AAAAAAAAAAh

  • wtf is gone going on about jack nicholson? wtf stick to poker gabe

  • Lol stu ungar looks like michael jackson... right!?

  • lmao!

he's talking about jack nicklaus, the golf legend, and how a commentator said all the other golfers got intimidated by his presence. its a comparison to stu ungar and his effect on other poker players.

listen and learn before uttering such childish remarks.

  • why the fuck does he say "we started out with over 4000 players" there was only 312 in the tourni dickshit

  • i think it was 4000 players in all the tourneys combined, and now they are down to the final table of the final tournament. or maybe Gabe Kaplan is an idiot, i dont know

  • ungar 10 miles ahead of the rest

  • i love how that year's final table was held outdoors

  • the best player ever!!!!

  • Mr. Kotter interviewing Stu was like Barbra Walters interviewing Whitney.

I'm surprised he didn't ask for a receipt!

  • cool player man

  • ungers like the rank xerox of poker

  • I just read Ungar's biography, it is awesome to watch this afterwards.

  • Too bad Unger died a year after this tournament..

  • this is so old school u cant even see the players hand!!! lol

  • it has nothing to do with old school/new school : check the footage of stu's first win at the WSOP 1981, you can see the hole cards

  • right, but not the mucked cards. only shown cards because there was no pocketcam. i think that is what he described with oldschool. afterwards you see the shown cards on in the tv version.

  • haha Gabe still does poker 10 years later on HSP, Good on him

  • roger that
