I believe it is Maggie Brown, she had an album out a few years ago. I bought it on the strength of this - great album. Someone covers her song fourty dollars, you can find it on youtube
Man oh man, if I was in a barber shop with Johnny Dowd the last thing I would do is ignore him like all the dopes in this clip. People are strange........
This song is on Johnny's Wrong side of Memphis. The second song on that album is Papa, Oh, Papa". Its so twisted and good. The whole album is worth checking out in fact.
@Sweden80Here Actually, this "documentary' is very carefully scripted and done by an Englishman. For example, the man that Jim White accidentally encounters walking on the dirt road is the famous writer Harry Crews. No wonder he is so clever. I am 55 and have lived in the Southeast all my life, so I can tell you this is not an accurate depiction, it is just entertainment. I still like it though. I am a big fan of the participants Johnny Dowd, The Handsome Family and Jim White.
@IStoleYourPotatoes I know you may have been replying to someone else but I put docudrama in the description. There are things that are set up for sure [this scene for instance] and the part with Harry Crew and the part with the guy from 16 Horsepower in the woods. But I think some of the stuff is legitimate 'documentary' like in the restaurant and the jail probably.
I adore Johnny Dowd. Like okra, he's definitely an acquired taste.
He's like an odd cross between Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Probably not as good as either when compared against the strength of Cash or Dylan in their respective genres, but standing alone, Dowd is curiously compelling.
the song was recorded live in the barber shop with maggie brown singing the chorus. it can be heard in it's entirety on the soundtrack album. you can even hear patrons coming and going in the background as he's singing!
@dirtearth The female voice is Kim Sherwood-Caso. The song is from the cd Wrong Side of Memphis. Check out Johnny's Pictures from Life's Other Side cd. It is awesome!!! Kim's angelic voice is all over that album and is a great counterpoint to Johnny's.
@IStoleYourPotatoes Hi, yesterday I saw and heard Johnny play with his band. They were awesome and so was Stuurbaard Bakkebaard. I had a chance to ask Kim if she was the woman singing in this vid. She denied, so I put my chips on Maggie Brown. I don't care too much for potatoes anyway, be my guest.

This is perfect because it is not perfect :D It feels real and raw. No acting at all, straight from the heart.
My favorite documentary! greets from Sweden, europe

I love that out-of-tune hillbilly folk sound... I'm with you helgatridr, it adds to the songs desperation and darkness.

Yeah, i really like how he sounds like he is out of bounds. Not smooth, but hard, regardless of what people like or tend to like.

Even the girl has some raspy imperfect moments... I just love this sound. But, I grew up in Louisiana and heard this kinda' music all my life.

Maggie Brown recorded a very good cd...and yep,it's Louisana swamp sound....

I honestly think the woman's voice only -sounds- beautiful because she's singing with Johnny tone-deaf Dowd.

I definitely agree with you! My EARS. Can this guy honestly be famous?
baxtercunningham 3 years ago
I understand what you, but it's because of the feeling he puts in his voice. in combination with his dark lyrics it just fits perfectly

I honestly dont know who sings the female part. It may or may not be the woman you see in the video. I only know the male is Johnny Dowd.
