  • I have a question: How does the trading actually work? I made the depot, the merchants unloaded their goods, I put some of my items in there, set that option to "anyone may trade", but I still can't do anything, the trade option in the depot is still grayed out. How do I get one dwarf to actually do the trade?

  • @Ninjris Did you click the "Request trader at depot" button?

  • is it wrong to play minecraft while listining to this ? XD

  • @1337lolguyman

He said something in the first tutorials something about he's german or something...

  • My trading caravan came before i was on this video in the tutorial, i didnt buy anything and i made some "trade agreement" thingy, and then about 10 minutes later the merchent beserked and killed his friends and my dwarfs came and picked up the stuff they had. :\

  • You can build trade depots inside as long as there's a three tile wide path for the traders to use..

  • Lol "one of those damn elves"

  • Lol'd at the bucket-bouquet reference.

  • why do you always build 2 or 4 or each workshop when you only have 1 dwarf who can do that kind of work? Does it increase the speed for that 1, or is it for when you have more than 1 dwarf who does the work?

  • @dodgydogman I think i mentioned it in one of the video's, but basically for more queue space. You can give each workshop a command queue of 10 things. And of course its also for when more dwarves come. And besides, most workshops cost only 1 stone so why not build 4 at once.

  • @dodgydogman another reason for having at least 2 workshops : if a dwarf goes in a strange mood, he will take a workshop over and it wont be available for things you want made, so 2+ means production can carry on as normal :)

  • I have a rather big problem, my dwarves refuse to build my jeweller's workshops and even worse a trading depot! Why?

  • @EEBLESUCKS I would guess the same goes for Jewelers as has been mentioned for the other jobs. If you did not bring a dwarf with the required profession from the start, you need to pick a dwarf and order him to do the profession you need - they will perform badly since they are untrained but you'll get the workshop up and running atleast.

  • @Tehnexie

Yeah i tweaked, pressed loads of keys, had a few dwarves commit suicide but i am so past that dwarf fortress stage now :) Learning that the elves DO NOT like wood crafts.

  • i accidentally flagged a comment for spam. tricky button snuck up on me

  • Woah! I have just got 10 migrants early :O

  • When I build a trade depot it says I needs doors, and then it just builds a door. It also says it has to be inside. Wtf?

  • Hmm, a wagon just bypassed my inacessible site. I don't get why it's inacessible when my dwarves are entering and leaving it nicely.

  • Wagons are bigger then dwarves. Make sure there's a path to the place that even a 3x3 wagon can fit through.

  • ...we can use the mouse to play?

  • A word of wisdom: Contrary to popular belief, workshops currently generate NO NOISE at all. Check "noise" on the dwarfortress wiki for a link to where Toady One (game creator) stated so.

  • A tip about assigning labors to your dwarves: There is this program called "Dwarf manager" which shows a list of your dwarves sorted by profession and lets you give them job designations without having to go into every individual dwarfs menu.

  • What is that graphics pack you have? Mine sucks >_>

  • Check out MayDay's graphic pack, it's pretty cool : >

  • Oh my God. One miner is now "harvesting plants", when:

    a) he has mining to do.

    b) I put in labour preferences ONLY mining, nothing else.

  • Also, when i click "u", I see both of my miners have "no job" written when I've clearly designated some mining to be done. It's not as if they're on break or anything.

  • well, they've left. And now some migrants are holding out near us... hmm...

  • It says they'll be leaving soon :(

    Will they come back?

  • I did everything you've done, and while I was mining the bedrooms a trading caravan came :O They're still here and my miners are still digging away on the lower floor and bedroom floor.

  • So the Dwarfs can 'hear' the workshops on the same level no matter how far away they are? Or just 4 tiles?

  • I'm still having trouble starting a fort and there being no soil to farm on so all of my dwarves are dying, can anyone help? I dont understand the soil idea and irrigation sounds too complicated because the nearest rive is a mile away from it

  • Dig one level down or into a nearby hill and place your farms in there.

  • I wonder how many got the "Bucket pronounced as Bouquet" joke.. As a fellow Dutchie, it was obvious. ;)

  • That show was nutty, just plain odd.

    *shiver*

H Bucket scared the crap out of me when i was little, she kinda reminded me of my mother, except evil.

  • You mean it wasn't a reference to "Keeping Up Appearances"? Is it something to do with Dutch phonology rules, then?

  • @xAeternax do dutch people get keeping up appearances over there or is it a reference to something else?

  • @gimpnipples We get keeping up appearances in the netherlands yeah, or we used to atleast, not sure if its still on TV. Here it's called "Schone Schijn"

  • @xAeternax is he dutch?!

    maar dat wist ik niet

  • @RenzoVV98 I believe he might be German, but I could be wrong (I got that from him saying "Ich bin Captnduck," but I don't know if that is Dutch as well.

  • dito sorry

  • Crap! tried to hit pause but i ended up giving you a 1 star rating, sorry about that. great video though helped a lot. wish I saw it before "Oh nice! a river! and its full of carp good thing I had that fisherdwarf.

  • Damn that's a lot of work for 7 dwarfs.. it's a good thing there's enough ale!

  • I guess it also required a free mason, maybe all your masons were busy or incapacitated somehow?

  • I don't know, it didn't say anything about needing a mason; only an architect. It was probably just a weird glitch.

  • You need masons if the trade depot in stone, for carpenter, if its wood.

i think its just assumed lol

  • The job is suspended, go over it with [q] and press [s] to get the suspending off it. If that doesnt work try building the trade depot in a different place.

  • I tried that a few times, but the dwarves kept re-suspending it. I think it wasn't working because I was trying to build it out of stone, which I suppose requires some sort of advanced architectural degree? When I changed it to be made out of wood it worked fine. Does that sound right, or was it just a glitch and I merely needed to restart it?

  • Thanks for doing these, Capt Duck! I don't know if I'd be able to play this game without you.

I'm having trouble building the trade depot, it keeps saying "waiting for architect... needs architecture. Construction Suspended." I've given a dwarf an architecture job preference but he won't do anything. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?

  • Hey man, thanks for all your videos... They're great for getting into the game. Much better than text tutorials!

  • Sounds a bit dangerous to make a fortress with 100+ levels down. Who know, sometime you may hit lava and it'll seep in and kill everyone.

  • However, this is often a good thing, as if you play your cards correctly, you can use the magma as fuel for quick and easy smithing. And besides, I don't think that magma seeps up, it's much chunkier than water, and pressure doesn't effect it in the same way.
