@grippa88 No class? I guess you never saw Thierry Henry play for Arsenal? You know THE Arsenal, one of the most classy teams on and off the pitch, and also THE Arsenal that Thierry Henry scored 226 goals for? Thierry Henry is one of the most classy football players of all time, and the best striker the Premier League has ever seen.
It was a good call, how could he NOT see the player on the ground? He got tossed to the ground and tried to get some payback and got caught by the referee.
his eyes were on the ball and didnt see the player on the ground and ran into him. you can tell it was accidental because after it happens henry immediately rose a hand to apalogize to the player, if it was on purpose, not only would he have at lest tried to hurt him, but he wouldve strolled right on by like nothing happened. its a tough call, but the ref in my opinion got this one wrong
@XxUltraOpsxX ...and so you realize that this "1st" world country you're from has never been anything more than a shit colony, and will never be more than that. 'Grats
@XxUltraOpsxX I'll go ahead and hint to you that you may want to be from a country of any relevance whatsoever (throughout the entirety of history) to have the attitude you have ;)
@XxUltraOpsxX I like how you're defending a person who single-handily prevented your country from qualifying from their only World Cup appearance in a long time. Good luck in 2014.
Not only is that an intentional red card, but that's also a fine. The referee saw that it wa deliberate. Now he won't play in the team's regualr season game and will probably not make the playoffs.
@XxUltraOpsxX Yeah, and my father is Santa Claus...I can do that to. You'll get over your xenophobia one day, and realize what a douche-bag you are. I pity you because of the guilt you will feel.
fuckin stupid mls, u dont deserve to have henry, he needs to come back to the premier league where he is known and respected and can play with ppl who actually know what the sport is called and how to play it
@XxUltraOpsxX Yeah, because Ireland has fared much better than the USMNT in the last decade....wait. End of convo, cause you're only here due to being butthurt. As bad as France did, no one wanted to see that trash Ireland squad playing direct football, lmao.
If this had been in any other league, there would be absolutely NO controversy in these comments...Everyone would agree that it deserved a red...But nooooo...Everybody just HAS to criticize the MLS, which just happens to be a VERY good league, when you really think about it!
Sometimes there are people who are so full of themselves that they'll get sent off. That was completely intentional and deserves a red. The bad news? Next game: vs. Philadelphia, who are red-hot!
Definitely intentional and anyone who knows Henry character knows it. He's a sly player and knows what's going on around him at all times - he thought he'd be smart and get revenge for losing the ball just before that but the direction he ran was away from play and away from where the ball was going. Either he's going blind with old age or it was a deliberate, malicious and cowardly act. Unfortunately Henry's ego prevents him from being talked about as a great player by neutral fans.
@XxUltraOpsxX Lol, you're a fag, and have been called out as such. You jealous cause you live in a third world shit-hole? Tears for Fears? You really are a faggot, lmfao.
thats almost as bad as Zidanes headbutt in the 06 final. but yes definite intent to hurt the guy that was already on the ground. another sleazy French move.
im def a henry fan but that was surly a red, any ref with common sense would give a red specially when the ref is right in front of the incident, he was clearly trying to hurt him for stealing the ball away..
This is why I hate American commentators. Calling Henry clumsy? Seriously? This is one of the best players in the world and you're calling him clumsy while on the pitch. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard
Henry deserves a lengthy suspension for that. Clearly aiming to knee the player in the back of the head, which could have been career threatening, or even deadly if he hit him wrong. What a low class move
@gosox773 you can't compare this with Beckham...this is very clear that it Henry did not mean to do this...plus Henry does not gain anything for slaming into the player...the player is on the ground and away from the ball....use your head man...
Purely deliberate. Look to the right and all you see is a list of videos showing how world class of a plater TH is. What seperated him from most? His dexterity, his ability to work in confined spaces and his amazing footwork. For someone so dextrous I find it hard he couldn't have run around, leaped over or just cut away.
Also at aboue the 1:24 mark you can see he is looking at the downed player and he leans his lead leg into him.
watch from 0:09, he gets up and runs directly at the player who just stripped him of the ball. he is a good 5 yards away when he starts running, there is no way he didn't see Espinoza on the ground. If you watch closely the line he was taking would not bring him to the ball, he would be well behind it when he got there. There was clear intent on the play and Henry tried to make it look innocent. good call by the ref
@BHAZ4WINGS Its either a red or its not. Violent conduct is going to be a red. Either no call or he's gone. The ref came out and said he felt it was intentional and at that point, he's gone. Like Beckerman's headbutt. He didn't hit the player very hard, but with that kind of intention with no ball nearby, its a red. Its just that Henry is far far move clever than Kyle and tried to pass it off like it was an accident.
Alright, even if it was a mistake or inadvertent, the way it happened and the events right before it make it worth a red card. He just had a tough challenge against espinoza and 10 seconds later runs his knee into his head accidentally or not, it looks like a revenge foul.
So to all you people saying omg mistake, he was looking at the ball. it doesn't matter, the events right before made it a red. So, henry might just be really unlucky, or his revenge plan failed.
unsurprisingly NY Red Bulls mess up at the crucial moments again. Rafa Marquez goes into a rage, calling Henry to play to his level. after which Han Backe and the rest of the team preview the Philly home game, calling it a MUST WIN match. back to square one, same old story
I second that. Then again, I think he did a similar thing while he was playing for Barcelona. But calling it a history of being a little on the edge? That's hardly true.
n by the way what kind of guy tackles someone like that who intentionaly trys to tackle someone like that if i were trying to hurt a player purposely i would do it in a clumsy manner !?!?!
hi i can understand that n saphiro1111 is stupid ive done something like that where i didnt realize there was a guy on the ground cus i was focusing on the play i didnt do it on purpose n i didnt get carded i was just warned
Henry has this kind of reputation and as a pro player, needs to be aware of whats going on around him. And, in response to dutchcrazyidiot, all players who get ejected beg plead and apologize. They are trying to look innocent. Think before you post.
Look at the replay, he's looking at the ball and also directly after he hit him he apologized and not like mostly after you make a foul put your hands up and be like I didn't do anything.
Of course it was a red, if his intention was to chase down the ball then he would have been running back towards his own goal. Yes, he put on his best poker face after he kicked him, but if you cant see through one of the most cynical players in world football then you're pretty naive. There's always a few idiots who will believe he's a martyr doing his bit for the team. lol
It wa sintentional...look at his eyes. Henry was pissed he was stripped of the ball and wanted some revenge....Henry is the same prick who thinks his hand ball is fair against Ireland....
Awful decision, he was looking at the ball, you can see in his expression he was trying to aviod him, and he instantly apologised. What a terrible referee that was a complete accident
malicious intent. Henry didn't get a call on an obvious foul on him just seconds earlier. It's pretty clear from the later 2 angles that he leans into the player down. I think the referee was spot on on the call. Henry just let his emotion get the best of him and didn't think he'd get a red card. Unfortunately for him, Leaning into a player as your about to hit him is Malicious intent, and does justify a red card
Sadly he deserved it. look at 1;26-27. You can see he's knee go down at th eother players back. i've seen Thierry move he's legs out of th eway to not get hurt a hundred times. He could have changed directions way before. He took 3 steps without changing direction. Good call. Sucks for the Red Bulls.
Let me put it this way. As a player, you are always keeping an eye on the ball but when the SKC is dispossessed of the ball at 0:09, there is NO WAY Henry did not see him there. So for people to say he didn't change direction to hit him and was obviously following the play is absolute bullshit. Henry is an amazing player and a legend and i've always loved watching him play, but he is still JUST a player like anyone else. He's always been a bit reckless and he fully deserved the red card.
I gonna say that the ref was wrong. Red was too harsh. A yellow would be it since it was bad but red no. I see it as more of a yellow then a red from the second I saw the video. REF is WRONG and was too HARSH on him.
It looks more of a yellow but I do see why it is a red. It looks more like a yellow though but it looks suspicious how Henry went towards him instead of going somewhere else. I'm right now 50/50. Hard to say. Yellow for making the foul. Red for making the foul look obvious that you are intentionally doing it. Really close.
All you fools saying it was an accident need to look back at the video. Henry was part of the play right before, Henry couldn't get the ball and so he did a bitch move and ran into him. Henry is a master of disguising fouls.
The referee was correct... That was excessive force... Definitely looked like he hit the guy in the head, on the ground, with a hard part of his body. Intent is irrelevant (commentators should be forced to learn the laws). @mls, that's a fairly offensive video description. You can either stand behind your officials, as any good league should, or you can second-guess them, and I think you've made the wrong choice here.
It looked unintentional, but from the ref's angle it could've been different as he was behind the incident. I thought it was unintentional based on Henry's facial expression when he knocked onto the other player.
i agree with the arsenal fan - anybody that's played a fair amount of contact sports would recognize that was intentional. he just tried to sell it as an accident to get away with a yellow.
there was no reason for him to run straight at the guy when there's plenty of space to run around. plus at 1:11, you can see henry leans his knee and aims it at the guy's back. just for a split second, but as i said, someone familiar with contact sports would recognize the intent there.
This is why MLS Refs are completely shit!! At least a yellow, But seriously, a red? I dont know about you other people, but it looked like Henry was just focused on the ball, and i dont think he was aware of the player on the ground. And if it was intentional, Why in the hell would he do in front of the ref? SMH-_-
As an admirer of Arsenal, I absolutely love Henry. But this was clearly intentional, only he tried to make it look accidental. He's done the same before while playing for Barcelona.
He definitely had to have seen the player and he attempted to put his knee into the back/head of the man on the ground. Not only a red card, but he should be suspended. I can't stand the cheap shots Henry takes at players. Unacceptable play.
1:23 look at his head and his eyes, he's looking at the ball, and hes running towards it, there just a guy in the way, it's not a red.

You can either stand behind your officials, as any good league should, or you can second-guess them, and I think you've made the wrong choice here.

it was already a foul and he made it even worst
luigidude44 4 months ago
it was a fucking accident. ref must be blind
ilovemanutd121 4 months ago
It looked unintentional, but from the ref's angle it could've been different as he was behind the incident. I thought it was unintentional based on Henry's facial expression when he knocked onto the other player.

I'd like to side with henry, but he ran right into that guy, he had plenty of time to move around and avoid any contact
MrKevfry 4 months ago 3
@MrKevfry true but i think he was just looking to get the ball back and ended up running into the player.

Scum tackle from henry, definite red.

what did I just see? I watched this video 3 times and I still have no clue
powpanda 4 months ago
It wasn't a mistake, I've seen Henry do this kind of stuff before. He get's aggravated easily.
nike2376 4 months ago
i agree with the arsenal fan - anybody that's played a fair amount of contact sports would recognize that was intentional. he just tried to sell it as an accident to get away with a yellow.
there was no reason for him to run straight at the guy when there's plenty of space to run around. plus at 1:11, you can see henry leans his knee and aims it at the guy's back. just for a split second, but as i said, someone familiar with contact sports would recognize the intent there.

If that was Mullan this would be filled with Sounders fans calling for his head...

He's done the same before while playing for Barcelona.
oooorator 4 months ago 18
He definitely had to have seen the player and he attempted to put his knee into the back/head of the man on the ground. Not only a red card, but he should be suspended. I can't stand the cheap shots Henry takes at players. Unacceptable play.

Definite yellow, he should be more aware of his surroundings. But I don't think it's a red card.
