On March 1, 2002, my father died. I was his youngest son and was the only one in the hospital room with him when he passed. Karate Kid II has always been a personal movie for me, because of this scene, because everything that Daniel describes is exactly what happened to me. I always felt that I had been the least favorite of my father's children, and yet, at the very end, it was I alone who was with him when he passed. I weep everytime I watch this scene. I love you, Dad.
This is a wonderful scene in a little movie. Watch Pat Morita's acting here. Without saying anything he displays so much emotion! I wonder what he was thinking about to actually tear up like that.
This entire scene kicks the ass of the remake. Don get me wrong, I though the remake was okay, but the relationship between Miyagi and Daniel was much more powerful than Mr. Han and Dre's. it may have been Miyagi's wisdom and quirkiness that made him more lovable, or Daniel's innocence and Nativity made him more interesting. Did Daniel fuck up, sure, but he was a good guy. Dre was kind of a little asshole, while he didn't deserve to be bullied, but I enjoyed seeing him get his ass kicked,
@darkservantofheaven true they already put him in the country the sequel would have taken place in anyway. Unless they screw it up and put them in Jaden's home country.
@Shanethefilmmaker I must admit this though, I think alot of my own hatred for the film(which I dont hate as much as I used to) is based on I had slight feeling of being beaten to the punch. Before the announcement of this movie, I was in the middle of writing a script with a similar premise,
part2 the scenero would have been A young african-american male learns martial arts to kick a drug habit from a eccentric Chinese restaurant chef, picture Pai Mei from Kill bill teaching him to cook while learning to sword fight, while he must learn to protect his San Fransico neighborhood from ancient Chinese demons and a sorcerer. I might still use this, but when this movie was announced I was pissed off, I felt it beat me to the punch. WHile I still do not like the movie, I admit it is okay
part 3, I just really Do not like Will Smith's kidsat all, Jaden is full of himself and his daughter Willow is fucking annoying. I liked Will smith for along time, I respected him, bu I do not like his family(other Jada
This movie is another masterpiece in this wonderful franchise. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita were brilliant as always. Tamlyn Tomita and Danny Kamekona were great too but I still missed Macchio's screen mother, she was very impressive in original movie. Anyway, The Karate Kid 2 was great sequel. They put more philosophy in it plus we can find out more about Miyagi's origin. I miss the 80's
In this scene, Pat Morita didn't say anything, not even ONE WORD; nevertheless he said so much with his tears. OMG, after so many years it still touches me!
I lost my dad recently and I was thinking the same thing, not being a good enough son but I was there with him just before he passed away so it gives me peace to know I was there to say good bye.
This was a moment that was so touching because Daniel knew exactly what his mentor was going through, thinking that he wasn't such a great son, that he had disgraced his father, but by being at his side when he died, that he (Miyagi) gave did the best thing a son could have done for a dying father. And now Miyagi had a surrogate son in Daniel...Daniel actually proved himself to have matured greatly in this movie, very powerful moment.
i think of my grandfather when i watch this scene... he was such a great man..THE BEST!!!!! if i could i would sit just like this by his side in heaven and just watch the sunset..... he had the same sad face when my grandma died and ill will never forget it....... see you old man when its my turn.....
Up until this point, Mr. Miyagi was Daniels teacher and mentor in almost all aspects of life. With the passing of Mr. Miyagi's father, Daniel became Mr. Miyagi's mentor on how to cope with the pain of losing a father. Mr. Miyagi now became the student-humbly.
what amazes me is the racial barriers he overcame as an actor. being type casted in happy days. I felt he was trying to say there needs to be done more about the asian community in this country.
A special scene. It is this moment and few others that make Karate Kid, Part II the most powerful chapter of the trilogy. It is this moment where there is no question that Miyagi and Daniel have become father and son.
i think wha ti loved about this film is i can relate when my grandmother passed in the hospital and was in a coma on life support i held her hand and said goodbye and she was gone. I honestly can say to this day i felt I could hav done more for her even thought the rest of my family told me I had showed her how much she had done for me. I still can not watch this scene with out getting choked up.
@lifeafter79 Because actors think they should act natural. Actors like in The Karate Kid just are doing what comes natural. They don't think about how to be and do, like modern day actors. And thus they don't try to mimic/act at all when it comes to their body language.
You can see clearly that Daniel and Miyagi just are their role and do what's natural. Modern actors try to be their role. Totally different approach of getting into your role in my opinion.
@paladindarknite Depends on what you personal nature is and what you deem good. But if you think its good and the people in your surroundings agree, I guess it can't be bad... can it? ;)

This bit in the movie breaks my heart. The look on Miyagi's face is heartbreaking and when the music kicks in the tears just flow even more :(
Stunning, thanks for uploading
