@corpseexquisite Cool! Trek 520 is a fine bicycle! I actually looked at one before I got my Fuji. It was a bit pricey for me at that time. With any touring bike, though, I would expect to do some customization to make it a comfortable fit for the long haul, which means more money. Still, bike is the most economical means of transport, period.
I have the same rear rack as you - the Tubus Logo. I use it for panniers for touring and commuting. Interested in how you have attached your milk crate to the top. Is it tensioned on with straps? How secure is it? I am hoping ot do something similar for grocery shopping. Thanks for any advice. Happy pedalling!
@MiddleAgeCyclist Isn't Tubus Logo a fantastic rack? I used heavy duty zip ties sold at a hardware store. Zip ties rated at 75 pounds (30kg) are sufficient. There are also zip ties rated at 175 pounds, but those are probably overkill. I've had this setup for about 8 months, and the milk crate hasn't shifted a bit. Be sure to leave enough space between the seat and the milk crate (1.5 inches is enough), otherwise it can get uncomfortable...
I do think the Logo is great. I can carry loads on it. I want to do a grocery shop by bike though so need to carry many bags of shopping which will not all fit in panniers. I have wondered about a trailer but the cost and faff put me off. Fitting a crate to the rack seems a good solution for these short trips. I am after something I can fit and take off inbetween shopping trips so the cable tie option is not ideal for me. I'll look at other options. Thanks anyway.
@darrelljameswhittle I went for the ultra-cheap solution. I'm sure there are good removable baskets that will fit the Logo. I've grown to like the fixed basket (dumping layers of clothing in it quickly when I generate too much heat under winter gear etc..)
It's a very cool bike... impressive that you put it together from scratch. I love steel touring bikes. Mine is an older Trek 520.

Very nice, do you plan longer rides with it?

@superpelic Yes, most definitely! A 500 mile tour is in planning stages, likely in the spring :)
