  • Jason this is exquisite - and although your father has finally left, and my father left sometime ago, I feel as though you somehow have made it possible for me to say the same things to my father through the ether. This is truly a very important film for the future of how we let those we love know they have made such a difference in our lives. Being the author of the book 'The Intimacy of Death & Dying' I know how valuable your film is.

  • A perfect way to say thank you and I love you dad. May he rest in peace.

  • I'm sorry but Animal Beatbox is the epitome of what's wrong and what's always been wrong with the Australian film industry...whether this film deserved to win or not is beside the point...Animal Beatbox, however, certainly did not deserve to win...Animal Beatbox did deserve to be a quirky little animation one would find on YouTube but to go on and be chosen by a so called "panel of experts" who are supposed to represent the highest level of film making in this country...the whole thing is a joke

  • Today my dad rests finally, battle over. The Unspoken has been said, and thank you to everyone for watching my dad's little film. Vale Jan van Genderen 03/02/29 ~ 15/12/11

  • @jasonvangenderen May his soul rest in peace, dont worry, now he's in a better place and one day, you'll get to see him again.. take care.. :)

  • "The Unspoken has been said. The battle is over. Rest now Dad, we love you." - JVG 15/12/11

Sending our love and peace Jason. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story with the world.

  • To me this is the First winner...WELL DONE...

  • this should have won it is amazing

  • wow amazing

  • this is incredible.

  • Superb, spare, lean, and powerful, like your father's sculptures, your film

makes me proud to be human, and stirred to be a better man.

  • I am crying so hard

  • Thanks for the film. It is very powerful. We all come to grip with death differently. We all face the same issue. Thank you for bring this out.

  • I can really relate to this. I watched my mum die from cancer back in 1986. I'm glad we had time to say everything we wanted to say to each other before the end came.

The same thing for my father who passed away (gradually, after a stroke) in 1997.

They were both beautiful people - I was lucky to have had them as my parents :)

  • What a triumph. Poignant. Poetic. Heroic. A son's love and admiration for his "mate" - his father.

  • graceful and beautiful

  • i think it would have been more touching without the use of the word 'mate' and replaced with who he actually - his father his 'dad'. It seems so much more intimate but great film regardless!

  • Did you show this to your father? How did he react?I would like to do something similar for my dying mother.

  • I watch movies like this, and I ask myself, how in the hell did they allow Animal Beatbox to beat this? Don't get me wrong, Beatbox is good, but this is something else.

  • beautiful and moving. thank you for that. many sentiments that i will pass on to my father, thank you for showing the way.

  • Aho, brother. Steve - Great Bear

  • -WOW- There is so much trust in those images and so much comfortable language and heart in those words. A tear gripping homage.

  • Incredible - heart-felt - Thank you for sharing.

  • Incredible - heart-felt - Thank you for sharing.

  • Beautiful... Thank You!

  • Made me tear up.. Sad man.

  • Thank you. I saw my Dad and I in this. Den

  • Aww! This is so sweet!

Brb guys. I'm going to go and hug my dad. :')

  • Wait this is true right?

  • Wait, this is true right? Why are people joking?

  • This is the only Tropfest video so far that made me cry.

  • i love my dad!

  • Lol 1:35 - 1:36

  • this is truly beautiful, thank you. Brought a tear to my eye

  • Wow. I'm usually described as heartless, yet this brought me to full tears. Bravo.

  • Brilliant

  • This touches people, i have absolutely no clue how animal beatbox won just a guy cut out animal shapes like i done at the age of 9 and just repeated what they were "dogs and cats"? seriously what a joke.

  • this is truly an amazing video. Thank You.

  • beautiful, i think you can feel a bit ripped off to have 'only' been runner-up considering the winner isnt universally appreciated.

  • this video is really touching and sad but it dose show the spirit of the human heart

  • Congratulations. What a precious gift. Sharing it with the world will hopefully inspire others to start communicating while they still can.

  • There's something about using Tropfest as a forum to express these feelings that is a bit disquieting. It would be different if the film-maker made this to show privately to express his unspoken feelings for his dad, but this was made with his dad. A film crew spent a day at the house. They would have lit scenes and repeated them to get the moment right. Feels like a private conversation but choices about writing, shots, music are all designed to illicit an emotional response in strangers.

  • Wow, I'm crying like a cow right now. This film touched me deep. Thanks for sharing!

  • fucken best tropfest film i've seen by far.

  • The best film of tropfest 2011. touched me deeply.

  • Amazing work guys! And all the more stunning that something as this dialogue from a son to his father, can open a dialogue from one generation to another - especially in Australia. These walls and problems don't just go away, they kill us.

  • Beautiful, stunning.

  • @ticktickBlom geez... your dad must fuck you daily for you to express such hatred... do us favour and get the fuck back into the dungeon from where you came.

  • @ticktickBlom mind posting the links to every movie?

  • That is excellent

  • I was born not knowing my dad, this makes me sad :(, i needa go hug my step dad

  • I liked it. :)

  • This desrved to win, it had a meaning and the message was powerful, unlike animal beatbox.

  • That brought tears to my eyes. Very touching, im sorry a song about nothing and animals won this competition...

  • BRAVO..........

  • this is deep it actually literally made me cry

  • whats the name of the soundtrack ?

  • @TheDanger0uz its called "blow.me.tuesday.only.on.ur.moms.bed" by king.penis.all.mighty

  • Should have won. The winner was a music video. Sound track was better than the pics.. This one was our of the square

  • That was great!!!

  • good movie!!!

  • Such a great film, I can't even describe how this made me feel. I lost my grandfather 5 years ago, he teached how to be a good man in life and he gave me his sense about music, I coudn't say goodbye to him but I know he's still a part of my life in some way.

  • Through all my tears, I just want to say - thank you. This was absolutely beautiful.

  • true love it can be for God, a mate , a lover or a sibling but it something to be cherished and acknowledged. My sincere appreciation for this masterpeice!!

  • Is it just me, or is the tone of half of his 'mate's distancing?

  • This film won 2nd in the tropfest contest. But it won 1st place in my heart.

Thanks for your beautiful words mate. Cheers and with lots of love.

  • thankx for the movi , in the memory of my dad 2

  • @a3dollabil It's using a first person narrative mode... it's definitely a film.

  • @a3dollabil wow! what a sad, uneducated individual you are!

  • @poofterface first person narrative? Unfortunately, a text-based narrative point of view device does not translate well in cinematic articulation. First person is frowned upon in film because it ignores or takes precedence over the visual and background sound elements. It is ultimately distracting, and as such, is not widely used, and for good reason. So his comment is not without merit, whereas yours is, sadly, reflective of your choice to insult someone instead of educate.

    Poor form.

  • @tarveren ohhh yeah!shutup

  • I can't believe that didn't win!

  • Beautiful, things I want to say to my dad but struggle too. Should have won.

  • Congratulations. It should have won. Really beautiful. I'm so glad a short film like that is in the world for us to view. Thanks : )

  • Beautiful, touching film.

I don't understand how "DOGS AND CATS AND DOGS AND CATS" prevailed over this... This is by far more deserving. But congrats on runner up!

  • Beautiful

  • Why didn't this win? D: God, this was gorgeous!

  • WOW!! I cried so much. Very well done

  • Very hard to watch as my husband passed away recently from lung cancer and I wish my husband had acknowledged he was sick, so we could have spoken those unspoken words. Also, the little girl who played the daughter in 'A Desperate Deed' is our daughter and I believe Tropfest and being apart of it helped her through the unspoken sadness of losing a parent.

  • This was my fav, Im recently going through a similar situation. Good job!!

  • This was my favorite Tropfest movie, and yes i bawled my eyes out too

  • How did I know, id'e be bawling by the end of it! My dad died of cancer too and ten years on I still miss him terribly! Atleast when a death isn't sudden, you have a chance to say your goodbyes many times!! What a wonderful and moving (and honest film)

  • Beautiful... similar to what I'm currently living through... *hugs* and congrats on being finalist... xx

  • lovely film. beautifully shot, gentle honest script and augmented by a hauntingly lovely soundtrack. I can't believe it didn't beat Animal Beatbox! I guess it needed a punchline.

  • Gulp. Very touching. Great job.

  • Divine.

  • For all men and boys with fathers and for all women who wish to understand the uncelebrated love between father and son.

    Thank you both.

  • This short film was the most memorable for me as it resonated with my experiences of living with my terminally ill father, brought tears to my eyes-thank you for sharing this with us, very happy that you won something :)

  • Really beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing with us. What a great gift for your father. Glad you won something.
