Jason this is exquisite - and although your father has finally left, and my father left sometime ago, I feel as though you somehow have made it possible for me to say the same things to my father through the ether. This is truly a very important film for the future of how we let those we love know they have made such a difference in our lives. Being the author of the book 'The Intimacy of Death & Dying' I know how valuable your film is.
I'm sorry but Animal Beatbox is the epitome of what's wrong and what's always been wrong with the Australian film industry...whether this film deserved to win or not is beside the point...Animal Beatbox, however, certainly did not deserve to win...Animal Beatbox did deserve to be a quirky little animation one would find on YouTube but to go on and be chosen by a so called "panel of experts" who are supposed to represent the highest level of film making in this country...the whole thing is a joke
Today my dad rests finally, battle over. The Unspoken has been said, and thank you to everyone for watching my dad's little film. Vale Jan van Genderen 03/02/29 ~ 15/12/11
I can really relate to this. I watched my mum die from cancer back in 1986. I'm glad we had time to say everything we wanted to say to each other before the end came.
The same thing for my father who passed away (gradually, after a stroke) in 1997.
They were both beautiful people - I was lucky to have had them as my parents :)
i think it would have been more touching without the use of the word 'mate' and replaced with who he actually - his father his 'dad'. It seems so much more intimate but great film regardless!
I watch movies like this, and I ask myself, how in the hell did they allow Animal Beatbox to beat this? Don't get me wrong, Beatbox is good, but this is something else.
This touches people, i have absolutely no clue how animal beatbox won just a guy cut out animal shapes like i done at the age of 9 and just repeated what they were "dogs and cats"? seriously what a joke.
There's something about using Tropfest as a forum to express these feelings that is a bit disquieting. It would be different if the film-maker made this to show privately to express his unspoken feelings for his dad, but this was made with his dad. A film crew spent a day at the house. They would have lit scenes and repeated them to get the moment right. Feels like a private conversation but choices about writing, shots, music are all designed to illicit an emotional response in strangers.
Amazing work guys! And all the more stunning that something as this dialogue from a son to his father, can open a dialogue from one generation to another - especially in Australia. These walls and problems don't just go away, they kill us.
Amazing work guys! And all the more stunning that something as this dialogue from a son to his father, can open a dialogue from one generation to another - especially in Australia. These walls and problems don't just go away, they kill us.
@ticktickBlom geez... your dad must fuck you daily for you to express such hatred... do us favour and get the fuck back into the dungeon from where you came.
You are obviously retarded if you enjoyed this. Dont you think its stupid that he cant tell his father this face to face, but he can film his dad naked and send it in as an entry to the worlds biggest short film festival. He has also stolen several lines from a couple of movies, but i guess everyone missed that, becuase they were distracted by the originality
Such a great film, I can't even describe how this made me feel. I lost my grandfather 5 years ago, he teached how to be a good man in life and he gave me his sense about music, I coudn't say goodbye to him but I know he's still a part of my life in some way.
true love it can be for God, a mate , a lover or a sibling but it something to be cherished and acknowledged. My sincere appreciation for this masterpeice!!
Thanks for the comments everyone, it was a very emotional piece for me to put out there but I'm glad i did. Cheers for the support - Jason van Genderen (writer/director, The Unspoken)
@poofterface first person narrative? Unfortunately, a text-based narrative point of view device does not translate well in cinematic articulation. First person is frowned upon in film because it ignores or takes precedence over the visual and background sound elements. It is ultimately distracting, and as such, is not widely used, and for good reason. So his comment is not without merit, whereas yours is, sadly, reflective of your choice to insult someone instead of educate.
Very hard to watch as my husband passed away recently from lung cancer and I wish my husband had acknowledged he was sick, so we could have spoken those unspoken words. Also, the little girl who played the daughter in 'A Desperate Deed' is our daughter and I believe Tropfest and being apart of it helped her through the unspoken sadness of losing a parent.
How did I know, id'e be bawling by the end of it! My dad died of cancer too and ten years on I still miss him terribly! Atleast when a death isn't sudden, you have a chance to say your goodbyes many times!! What a wonderful and moving (and honest film)
lovely film. beautifully shot, gentle honest script and augmented by a hauntingly lovely soundtrack. I can't believe it didn't beat Animal Beatbox! I guess it needed a punchline.
This short film was the most memorable for me as it resonated with my experiences of living with my terminally ill father, brought tears to my eyes-thank you for sharing this with us, very happy that you won something :)
