its a statement about armchair philosophy, it is advocated experimental philosophy which entails "getting off the armchair" if you will, and doing something, hence the armchair burning, and the lack of a philosopher upon it...
All forms of philosophy are a little silly. Man will always about human nature, and it makes for great talks with a little alcohol under the stars, but even if we knew how the universe was created, or whether or not we have free will, would you live your life any differently?
@SlightlyInsane69 sure, philosophy can be purely abstract, but it is not confined to such abstracts as free will, political philosophy for example has led to every significant revolution, moral philosophy has helped underpin our western cultural norms when it comes to morality, etc. the effects of philosophy can be subtle, but it is a beautiful and necessary expression of human reason. not to mention all of science basically branced off of philsophy and the two are still deeply connected today.
I find it funny, how experimental philosophy relies on analytical philosophy. Without analytical philosophy, there is no experimental philosophy. The idea of replacing analytical philosophy is impossible as it directly deals with language, the most fundamental of all aspects of life. You cannot run an experiment without knowing what the terms mean.
If folks play with fire they should always have an extinguisher near by. Even for demonstrations like this. Sparks can fly and start other fires. Never start fires with gasoline, it is explosive. Other acelerants are safer when doing legimate burning. Practice safety when burning.
A whole cannot be replaced by a part of it. When a part confuses itself as the whole, it is funny. Experimental philosophy could at most be a field within philosophy, that is, a part of it. Philosophy as a whole is much too great to be replacable by one of its mere parts. A chair cannot be replaced by one of its legs. If one of its overly ambitious legs tries to burn the chair aspiring to replace it the only possible result is that the leg would burn itself along the way.
You are right that we are still doing Phi, when we do X-Phi. However, you are wrong to suppose that the object of X-Phi is to replace Phi. This is to confuse Phi with Armchair philosophy (A-Phi). Insofar as it can be said for there to be one, the true object of X-Phi is not to replace Phi, but A-Phi. If X-Phi is a part of Phi, then so is A-Phi. But if the object of X-Phi is to replace A-Phi, then we are replacing one 'leg' with another and not a chair with one of its legs.
"the philosopher thinks that he sees the eyes of the universe telescopically focused from all sides on his actions and thoughts. it is strange that this should be the effect of the intellect, for after all it was given only to aid the most unfortunate, most delicate, most evanescent beings in order to hold them for a minute in existence, from which otherwise, without this gift, they would have every reason to flee..." - Nietzsche
No, analysis without previous experience is just a reshuffling of your personal prejudices , or in a group, a re-enactment of the social order of that group.
_After_ experience is had, preferably both quantitative and qualitative, you can start analysing/ thinking, yourself or in a group.
And why is that of utmost relevance today more then ever? Because of the layer of IT between many people and the real world causes operators to mistake the underlying logic of the tool for the underlying logic of reality. -> broad systematic error comparable to bureaucracy, but with significantly reduced possibility for personal judgement at each operational node.
I would agree that consensus reality is a template of possibility, that is often confused for finite reality. This is also a tool for manipulation. We are dependent on a common denominator to communicate our experience in this world.
It becomes oppressive when the a person does not understand that they are creating the future just as they are creating the past.
Epistemological extremists are tedious, yes. If actual reality can be used as a control mechanism, is it less real? Do you actually need the reference to reality in arguments about consensus? As long as you're not talking about legislation it's not that relevant.
Meet the new employee, same as the old employee? Sadly, the people telling you the "new boss" owe you something in advance were lying to you for their own benefit. Don't blame the boss for that. Does this legitimize outright exploitation? Not for a second.
I loved it. Regardless of what people think of the newest Experimental Phil. "movement," I loved the new perspective of rejecting the classic conception of the subjectively authoritative philosopher. Thanks for the twist.
Well I like the idea that some philosophers aren't content with just pulling things out of their asses, this makes you almost relevant again, but doesn't psychology and sociology have every things pretty well covered in respects to the things you might do an experiment on?
Is this what it looks like through the eyes of an experimental philosopher? Traditional philosophy is usually done in ones own head on their armchair while an experimtal philosopher will go out and gather data.
I'm inclined to think that if philosophers really did demolish the arm chair, we'd just end up building it again. I'm not sure that conceptual analysis is something we'll ever be rid of.
I think you should have had an effigy of Gilbert Ryle, AJ Ayer or one of the other misdirected "intellectuals" who ruined so much twentieth-century philosophy sitting in the chair. Now that's a auto-da-fe I'd love to see. Nice video. Thanks!

At best, experimental philosophy could be interesting sociology. At worst, it could be prejudice mongering in a normative mask.

One leg is not adequate to replace 4+ legs. A one-legged chair is non-functional. If one dares to sit upon a one-legged chair, one soon falls....

So, philosophy is validated by quantitative data ? ...and the individual's thoughts are trivialized by "group think" ?
I think therefore I am irrelevant ( yikes! )

Where can I get this "previous" experience ?

olaer069 4 years ago
When reality is being used as a control mechanism is a limited reality, it limits the conceptual boundaries of what is real.
Real is not a qualitative word. It does not have a measurable quality, that can be diminished.
A singular consensus reality is defined by its limitations, as agreed upon by the individual observers

1) You are sucker! and the funny part is you don't even know it yet!
2) Nobody yet...but I got this guy in Nigeria who will be sending me some money any day now
3) The real question is why do you ask?
Your answer will be the very limitation of your reality concepts.
3b) Money(money is your god)
3c) I'll ask the question around here as long as I am in charge(I want power over others)
