  • THE best national anthem performance IMO, she made it look so effortless, it will be hard for anyone to top this, may she RIP. <3

  • 1:04 is that state flags?

  • This is nothing compared to Carrie and Faith...

  • R.I.P WHITNEY ~ CRY ~

  • she has got a really good voice!

  • holy crap. and she made that look effortless!

  • she dead

  • Timeless!

  • The one, the only. Whitney. End.

  • Its so much better than when others try to add all this voice inflection weird stuff like christina aguilera with the weird attempted-to-be-cool-but-not high notes that she changed up

  • <3 <3 <3 <3

  • WOW, i never really thought much of whitney but WOW!!! that was the best version i've seen.

  • This was SUCH a relief to watch after watching thirty minutes of national anthem fails

  • i wonder if any of those who dislike this can do better.

  • this will always be the best one............

  • It is not often that I mourn the death of a celebrity, but there is something especially sad about Whitney's passing. She was not suppose to die so young, and so suddenly. She was a good person who was attempting to - once again - live up to her world-class status..

I have been listening to other singers perform the national anthem. Many come close to Whitney's inspiring performance, but - without a doubt - all of them fall short.

  • Beautiful!!!! Beautiful soul too. R.I.P. Whitney.

  • @ywcamachoable how can she have a beautiful soul when its filled with cocaine?

  • @ilikefalloutgames Your question is very valid. I just feel that none of us is free to cast the first stone, and I think Whitney was troubled, not evil.

  • @ilikefalloutgames she was, please give some respect

  • thumbs up if you loved it!

  • Truly one of the best Anthems I have ever heard Whitneys voice is so free there was no struggle for her to sing this song she is just wonderdfu

  • @ every Super Bowl this should be played for the singing of the national anthem...end of story.

  • The last time I heard her sing this song was over 20 years ago. Thanks for posting.

  • i swea to god that gave me a chill. like a good feeling in the back of ma head HOLY SHIT IM NOT PLAYIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a singer! In the present, the Demi Lovato s version is the best...an opinion from an argentinean...

  • Sang whitney. You will be missed.

  • goosebumps

  • The best national anthem ever sang!!! HANDS DOWN MAN DOWN.

  • she is also backed by a symphony orchestra that was changing tempos with her to make sure she sounded perfect..... im sorry that she is gone, it is sad, she was a great singer but really why didnt anyone make this big of a deal when etta james died earlier this month? i hate that whitney died but she and bobby made a decision on how to live life

  • Holy shit! Chicken skin action

  • Two words.... Fuckin Awesome

  • R.I.P Whitney Houston

  • Proof that Whitney is an Angel created from God!

  • This is the best national anthem ever sung! You can just fell the passion radiating from everyone there, especially Whitney. God rest her soul. She always be with me. :)

  • Notice that everyone in the crowd is waving an American flag. Where is such patriotism 21 years later?

  • @whitesox130 a fucking war in Iraq was going on... Gulf War idiot.

  • @whitesox130 We found out we were being lied too, that's what happened.

  • @whitesox130 like whitney....dead.

  • PERFECTION! It's as if she was in concert, just a natural performer, beautiful

  • GOOSBUMPS - thats all i can say

    RIP Whitney Houston

  • Not lip singing...video is just not synced correctly..Whitney had a powerful voice and was a great singer on spot not like the artist of today

  • She is lip sinking thats for sure. But still very great!!!

  • The Best you haters need to stop if you'd look she was wearing red, white, and blue and it was a football game!!!you haters....

  • as much as I loved Whitney,I think the last few seconds were beautiful ,but the first part was not nearly as good as when Faith Hill sang it. my opinion. I love Faith Hill's version.

  • epic ! greetings from Brazil !

Don't let china run the world ! kill them all yankees ! god bless america !

  • Superb! Rest in Peace Whitney!

  • she did it best!

  • love u Miss whitney Houston!!! R.I.P

  • This is the best NATIONAL ANTHEM performance ever! And I mean EVER! R.I.P Whitney... :(

  • WOW I will never forget this day I was in the Air Force serving my country watching with my family. This will never again be sung better . RIP Whitney and thanks for this great part of American history!!!

  • Best preformance i ever seen...love whitney

  • She will be missed, Listening and watching this video, Teared up during singing the NA

  • Seeing the old whitney(the one i will remember) sign our NA. She's so pure in this video, the industry can't produce them like this anymore! truly a great voice!

  • skip to 1:28. makes me wanna cry she sounds so good

  • This is pure art. Although I am mexican I must adming the US Anthem is beautiful. Her voice is one of a akind. Rest in peace woman of Angel's voice.

  • Whitney's voice was the voice of America. Her voice was our voice.

  • She simply sang her heart out and brought that home. Incomparable.

  • @EdenMani1 Like amen

  • Stunningly beautiful.

  • i get chills watching this video it is ridiculously PERFECT! Like she wrote it her self R.I.P WHITNEY

  • she had a beautiful voice, but WTF is she wearing workout clothes to sing the national anthem?

  • @dundonrl Some people just must find fault. Just enjoy the song. Maybe she should have worn a gown to the ball game.

  • RIP Whitney.

  • Look, there are at least 11 complete morons on the planet. God bless you Whitney. One of the best singers ever.

  • I'm on here comparing everyone I can to the singing of the national anthem...and no one hasn't topped her. RIP Whitney!!!

  • Thank god there's people like Whitney Houston and Carrie Underwood who know how to sing the song correctly. I'm tired of people revising it and creating their own versions.

  • Love this singing of the national anthem! Thank you Whitney! You will be missed!

  • gil9572: couldn't of said it better.

    RIP Whitney

  • Every time I hear her version of the Star Spangled Banner it chokes me up! I have never heard, and will never hear again, anyone come even close to singing it as spectacularly as Whitney!! Whenever I hear it I thinnk of her amazing voice singing it for our troops in the Gulf war. No doubt she sang it better than anyone ever has or ever wiil. Case closed!! Thank you so much Whitney and may God rest your soul!!!!!

  • RIP Whitney I will always love you, and will stay true to your music always. Such a talented wonderful magical singer you were and will always be. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Peace, love and God <3

  • God Bless America, not the Americans LOL

  • Put her in the best ever for singing that song in so many places, the best ever for bringing it home, the best ever singing it - if we ever hear someone sing it so beautiful in my life it will be nice and amazing but Whitney thank you ever so much for sharing your voice - lots of love and greatest sympathy to your loved ones may they rejoice in the time with you cuz I was a fan and surely and always impressed with your performances, peace to everyone. Lots of love to the world.

  • She belted it out, a real STAR, true to her soul. Spectacular, she was super special and they picked an angel to sing it for everyone, an angel on earth peace to you lady

  • A voice of an angel...now she flys with the angels. RIP whitney.

  • FUCK DRUGS !!!!!

  • After she sang the Anthem, from that day on, nobody should’ve been allowed to sing it again at any event, just play her tape over and over. Nobody can beat that. RIP

  • @EdenMani1 AMEN!!!!

  • @EdenMani1 I disagree, but her singing at that time was like Nelly singing or debuting I Believe I Can Fly... which I forgot to listen to tonight.

  • @EdenMani1 I must have listened to Whitney's presentation of the Star Spangled Banner at least a few hundred times of the past several years. It is a truly stirring performance and your suggestion is seriously one with merit. I'm from NY, and many years ago, a great opera singer, Robert Merril sung the SSB at a Yankee game, and his performance was so memorable, it was replayed for years till the habit of celebrity presentations took over. But Whitneys-is the best I have ever heard.

  • @EdenMani1 ..Agree! nobody can beat Whitney with her voice.

Dios la tenga en su Gloria. Descanse en paz Whitney Houston.

  • Now this is how the anthem should be sung. This is perfection. It makes me so proud to be an American. Wow what a voice.

  • Great Performance!!! Whitney, you will be truly missed. My prayers are with your family. God bless

  • Her passing is a tragic situation for sure. As many have said, it wasn't hard to see coming after watching her make so many bad decisions along life's path. Her eventual passing is proof positive that you will always end up in the destination of which path you are on takes you. It is very sad she couldn't find or wasn't shown a better path once she got lost. I've always been a fan and will continue on in her death. Youcan't deny her talent. She had it all over many of today's artists

  • R.I.P-She was great

  • Whitney...say it ain't so...

  • Wow! My heart hurts. R.I.P

  • SHE NAILED IT IN THE FIRST 10 SECONDS

  • God she is amazing. I will miss her.

  • I also watched this as she killed herself today- and it may not have been what most called suicide- but two decades of bad choices lead her to a far too early death by her own choices. I will miss her and the loss is huge- but too many very talented famous and rich people are meeting early death because they are treated like royaly-and they are not. Every time she used drugs she shortened her time with her child and while a great voice will be missed a great decision maker wont be.

  • R.I.P.

  • The best Ive ever heard it..it actually sounds like the anthem - not soul train. She was a great talent and will be very missed. God Bless!

  • Because I read she passed, I decided to listen/ watch this rendition of our Anthem. What makes it really so special is that she does it so effortlessly. PLUS she's loving every second of it . Those last 15 seconds, with that fantastic smile, are totally precious. RIP Whitney. You are not alone... no different than any of us struggling with life's Journey.

  • @dadwhitsett-very well said!

  • @dadwhitsett - agreed

  • R.I.P WHITNEY, I¨LL REMEMBER YOU FOR EVER.

  • Whitney and beyonce have the best

  • @itsbeyoncebitch body?

  • If only people could do this again. It isn't that hard, it's already written for them, but they decide to screw it up and make it about them. Its about America, don't make it your song, it's Americas song. This is the only anthem I have ever seen were someone did suck a good job.

  • @aForkandaSpoon *such* a good job LOL, you misspelled it in a funny way

  • @stisa56 oops

  • @stisa56 lmao...i c it =)

  • Comment removed

  • i remember this. it was during desert storm and the only time this song has ever brought a tear to my eye

  • Now I'm waiting for someone to actually sing it this good again!

  • HANDS DOWN THE BEST ONE...GOOSE BUMPS!!!!!

  • note to self: smoking crack makes you an incredible vocalist

  • @tilerthps she sung that way before she started hitting the pipe

  • This was a great performance of a song called the Star Spangled Banner but the National Anthem is never open for creative interpretation. Sing it in concert ad lib all you want but if an announcer says, "Please rise for our National Anthem" sing it the way Key wrote it or don't sing it at all.

  • @wannabetvchef Your high horse has no legs, if you knew anything about the national anthem you would know that it was not written as a song, it's a poem and was only meant to be a poem. It wasn't written in any key...dumbass. Go fry an egg, maybe you'll become a star

  • Nobody sings it better than Whitney

  • Goddam, this STILL gives me goosebumps when I hear it. Hands down the greatest ever.

  • @MrSuperbombastik U NEED TO STOP CURSING GOD AND REPENT AND TURN TO JSUS

  • @MrSuperbombastik me too. I love Marvin Gaye and some say that his 1983 version was the best. After listening to this again (and getting goosebumps), I'll have to politely agree to disagree. Whitney KILLED this song...and no one has ever done it better!

  • this would have been better, if she played the right damn melody.

  • after all these years..i still get goose bumps when I hear Whitney Houston singing the national anthem..she is the best ever...she sang from the heart with confidence...as though she wrote this herself...an absolute genious...and she has always been the best and always will be...no one will ever outrank her.

  • 8 people don't live in this country

  • Carrie Underrwood does it better

  • Comment removed

  • @MrMnj1193 No, not even close, and I like Carrie and think she is very talented.

But no way does she do that better than Whitney..

  • Wow that last note!

  • People who want to change our anthem are out of their minds. This should make everyone proud to be an American. Greatest EVER. She sings this like someone that actually appreciates what this country offers and respects how we got here. She added a little "soul" to it without ruining it, unlike others who try to make it about them and not the song. Total class (despite the track suit). Still the queen of all divas. Too bad she's had such trouble. God bless her and God bless America.

  • A nother like for this. God bless america.

P.S. all the people who disliked are either racist or communist

  • actually its the orchestration and the arrangement she is singing that is giving you goose bumps. Whitney was known for her live arrangements of songs she performed

  • goosebumps. thats the only way i can describe this. ive had them now for 10 min and i plan on tracking down the people who disliked this and shove a communist flag up there ass. Long Live The US of A!

  • Whitney sang this with a look on her face like she really loved her country and what she was singing about! To many people sing this song with a look of dred and deep concentration of either hitting some spectacular high note or rift, or not screwing the lyrics up. They do not have their mind on the song. Marvin Gaye sang it the same way as Whitney, confident and inspiring.

  • And that's how it's done, none of this vibrating all over the damn place! Whitney is a true legend.

  • people can say what they want about her personal life...which by the way is none of anybody's business....

but this woman has probably one of the best voices in history..with such little effort she can hit notes people only wish too...i mean really what a god given talent.

  • this one and Carrie Underwoods national anthem in 2006 was my favorite.

  • Take note, Steven Tyler...THAT'S how you sing the National Anthem! #justsayin'

  • @XiaolingMa Great yes, but she lip-synched it. I was at the game at Steven sang it from the heart and LIVE. EVERYONE at Gillette Stadium loved it!

  • Whitney was one of the last great singers, who had that operatic power. No offense, but beyonce can't sing like Whitney, but is given credit cause of her dancing and theatrics.

  • @TheAngeltoDemon I wouldn't say that. Leanne Rimes is a beast of a singer. I've not seen many mainstream singers match her talent. Check her out on Crossroads when she out-sang Joss Stone from start to finish. She is incredible.

  • @NegroDeSangue I'll check it out. I guess i'm refering more to how we select singers these days. To me, sure, they are solid singers, but it just seems to me it's more of a gimick these days, winning some show, or something. The old singers were just so talented that they were elevated by fans more than being hyped and packaged to fans. What comes to mind is like a Frank Sinatra with undeniable big sound, Marvin Gaye who you could hear really worked at his craft.

  • The orchestra helps a lot, but hers was probably my favorite ever, Then, sadly, along came 'Bobby'

  • WHITNEY WAS THE BEST OF ALL TIME REALLY THE BEST GENIOUS SINGER OF ALL TIME..I LOVED LOVED LOVED WHITNEY'S NATIONAL ANTHEM BEST OF ALL AGES...

  • My whole body was tingling throughout this entire video.

  • The best performance of National Anthem I've heard! It's 2012 and I'm yet to hear or see any singer including award winning celebrity artist surpass Whitney's rendition! Such clarity, passion and variety of tone! Whitney, come back on stage!

  • And thats how you sing it! not like all these stupid young singers that go all over the place with it or forget the damn lyrics .... this is how its done baby

  • This isn't the best. Jim Corneilson does it better. wait, not better, best ever! period.

  • @upsonline098 agreed.

  • The Very Best . Impossible to match Her . Even if Beyoncé's performance is very emotional an powerful at the same time, Whitney's performance soars kind of naturaly from Her Soul...She is now and for Ever in the Pantheon of the Greatest Artists who ever lived...

  • Have recorded, performed, literally all over the world. I wish I could have played this very moment in time in this perfect performance. I can't play this recording without shedding tears or laughing with joy. This is a performance that every performer playing here should be truly thankful for this playing opportunity.

  • we need those F-16s like we need another debt

  • I remember watching the game the night she sang this. Our country had embarked upon Gulf War I, & I was so grateful to witness a nation that QUICKLY and HONESTLY pulled tightly together as family in support of our troops who were on the ground in the Middle East. It felt as though we had learned from the painful lesson that was Vietnam and began to support our troops rather than condemn them. I broke down in tears the first time I heard Whitney's version. I still cry when I hear her sing it.

  • I bet you she did some crack after this

  • only one word... WOW!

  • holy moly that is so fricking amazing!!!!!!

  • rip

  • Comment removed

  • I've been looking for the horrible rendition by Macy Gray at the Hall of Fame Football game several years ago. Has anyone ever found it?

  • ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!???!!! PERFECT!!!

  • Best ever.

  • Damn, did she know what talent she had to go to Bobby & drugs ?! smh sad case.

  • fking drugs poor whitney fuck her she was amazing

  • This is the national EVER!!!!!

Brings a tear to my eye every time

  • @tritri0079 The first if not only artist (I don't keep up on today's music) who sung the Anthem and it went straight to cassette tape. I bought my copy many years ago!! Still the best version in my opinion.

  • @casims2000 I agree! I too bought the cassette as soon as it came out. One of the strongest memories I have of this version of it that is not tied to Gulf War I was on the 1st anniversary of September 11th. I was walking to my job & a car came around a corner, windows down, BLASTING this song as loud as possible. People stopped in the streets of downtown Richmond to pause and listen, & then people began cheering when they recognized it. THAT is the mark of a truly powerful & timeless song!

  • And for people who are saying it shouldn't be stylized, why not? Anyone singing the song should be proud to do so and OWN it in their own right, just like they own the right to be a proud citizen of this country. Whitney (who did a very good version that suited her powerful and amazing voice without going overboard) and anyone else who has taken the time to evoke pride, appreciation and emotion in their version of the anthem is right on point.

  • I love Whitney in her track suit. She is the best singer of the National Anthem, hands down.

  • Only altered version that completely owned everything. Yes

  • The way she singed it sent chills through me....SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!

  • INCREDIBLE!!!!

  • Her voice is amazing; but I agree, it should be sung straight. It should not be stylized. It is our national anthem.

  • Regardless of her current status, she still has the best rendition.

  • I'm astonished to this day!! Why did such a talent have to go down the wrong path??!!

  • If I was an American, this would really annoy me.

She is an awesome singer, but she murdered this.

A National Anthem should be sung plain and simple, as it is, as a token of respect for the Nation, not messed about with and abused as an excuse for the singer to show off.
