to me SRV is my favourite guitarist. but i do think jimi hendrix was more innovative in his live recordings. but it doesnt matter, its just my opinion. its not right and its not wrong. theyre different guitarists but both give me goosebumps
To everyone who insists on comparing SRV and Hendrix, it's as simple as this: Hendrix = more innovative. SRV = better guitarist. (But none of this matter because...) Both = awesome. Quit arguing and get the fuck down with the music.
@kingofthemosh Actually, I'd have to argue that Jimi was easily as skilled as SRV, and probably even more so. I love SRV and Jimi both, but I find that Jimi was a little too into experimenting at at times, while SRV wasn't so into that. If you're more of an artist with your music, you'd probably prefer Jimi, but in my opinion, SRV has a much better groove.
i was working as a security guard at one of stevies concerts six months before stevie died and got to see him play live. I didnt know who he was at the time but man he rocked the house that night. My friend was in the audience and ask me if he could go back stage. I told my friend to go get his guitar in his car and come back. Steve hand signed my friends guitar. My friend still thanks me for getting him back stage, since then im a big stevie fan!! great memories
@tony9L9L don't be talking about Texas or Texans like that. I'm from Texas and it's a great place. and you say everybody laughs at Stevie, that's where you're wrong. he's known as one of the greatest guitarists in the world
@tony9L9L wrong again genius. I love Stevie Ray Vaughan. He's one of my heroes. and when you say "the old helicopter crasher" you sound like you're saying "he crashed his helicopter on purpose" and that right there is a lie
@tony9L9L why don't you look up some info before posting crap like that up? the helicopters took off in very foggy weather. the year Stevie died would've been his fourth year of sobriety. so he obviously wasn't drunk and messing with the pilot.
@ryanmacdaddy1000 Yeah I heard that conspiracy, suicide cover-up story to dude. I think someone said there was a note. Maybe he was depressed because he felt responsible for ruining the blues? We will sadly never know.
@tony9L9L where are you getting all that? he didn't ruin the blues and his death isn't a "conspiracy, suicide cover-up story." it was thick fog that caused this. that thick, you can hardly see anything. it was an accident. it's a miracle that the other choppers made it over the hills.
@ryanmacdaddy1000 You believe in miracles? Miracle or suspicious? The other helicopters proove that something went badly wrong in Stevie's chopper, but what? Did he press the fuel cut-off button for a laugh causing the death of so many, a sort of accident/suicide? Or did he touch the pilot in a 'wrong' way causing them to plunge into the ground? We will never know.
@tony9L9L seriously, he said he was really needing to get to Chicago so why in the world would he do anything like what you just put up? maybe you're right, maybe we'll never know the whole truth, but I will never believe Stevie was that idiotic to do something that stupid.
This comes to prove that there was a black and a white beast ass guitarist of all time jimi back to back with Stevie own the world of blues just to show that any race can achieve this with dedication
i cant read music but that way he plays it different is just so amazing starting at 2:31. when i was watching black hawk down and they were playing that during the flight into solomia. I love it. This is my favorite song. It really is amazing how long Stevie can jam on the same rhythm for over 10 minutes in some cases and still play good sounding unique licks. Great guitar player and man. R.I.P. Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I go with Jimi on this one. I don't really listen to his studio version thats why. If you catch a few of his live versions you'd know why. You can't go wrong with this version either though.
dude without a doubt, i love jimmy and he did create the song so props for him but as far as tone, timing and just making your heart beat with soul and groove its all stevie
I got his autograph on a du MAURIER package :))) The after Concert PARTY MIX was intense! My My future wife was there too, unbeknownst; along with her brother. He drank water all night. SRV's version is really good but it just doesn't have that in your face rough sounding like the amp is gonna explode at any second and its all gonna fall to pieces sound its a lot more structured with SRV's way but their both amazing so what the hell haha

amazing to see the pregression of the wear on that guitar. Other vids it is worn down to all wood. Wonder where that guitar is today. Must be in a museum?
@310taylor stevie's older brother, jimmie, has it stored away in a warehouse with all the rest of stevie's rig and gear. he said in an interview he couldn't stand looking at it because it reminded him too much of stevie. rest in peace, my brother.

Rock on 2 of the best of all time
@guitar620 Jimi's Voodoo Child is like a Picasso painting. Every second of that song is perfect. SRV comes close, but nobody will ever play it like Jimi did.
@guitar620 Stop comparing people. I hate that. I love both Jimi and SRV. You can't just say one's better. Stevie's got the Texas Tone and soul and Jimi's just got raw passion....They are both so unique. It's been said a million times but just don't compare people. We all have are opinions and just cuz one person likes the sound of one better doesn't make it better.
@DENBOSCH123 "Slow and boring", thats controversial. Well, there wouldnt be this without "Slow and boring". So shut up, Jimi made the song, SRV put his twist on it, no matter what, Hendrix made the song. So "Slow and boring" makes "way better".
And P.S. Learn to spell *Jimi* Hendrix please, fuckin tools who slate him, and cant even spell his name right.
Did you see the version of Hendrix at Woodstock? I think they have pretty equal energy in the song compared to this one. You might like how he plays it slightly faster then.
Why do people keep hearing a cover that might be better than the original and think that means the covering artist must be better? It an awesome cover but he's just learnt it and put his own style to it. Actually writting it is 100 times more work and 100 times more an acheivment. Why don't people not get this?
@nomis101uk Its about performance - Simon Cowell wrote numerous hit songs, but does anyone want to see him perform them? Writing words on paper is NOT 100 times more difficult than making people feel something when they hear the music - both Jimi and Stevie Ray could do that and then some, some people just like one more than the other as an ARTIST
@aaronetics You think writting a song like voodoo child is just "writting words on paper"?...wow...ok. Just wow.
And I guess if I learnt the violin and put on a stella performance of Pagannini's 24th caprice that makes me as talented as Pagannini himself then? Brilliant. You know I play a pretty mean Scuttle Buttin'! I guess I must be almost as great as SRV.
@nomis101uk wow you missed the point...somebody out there might actually like your version of Scuttle Buttin', and actually think you are a "better" artist than SRV...granted, that person's probably going to be your wife, mom, or best friend, but for them, the experience you created by playing that song was "better" for them than watching SRV's video - get it? And for some people, yes-writing songs is easier than playing them. Wow.
@mikey420sf You don't dance to this, you sit and appreciate how amazing it is...cool name by the way now everyone knows how cool you are for smoking pot
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
while not as good as jimi (i mean, who is?), he certainly does this song justice. Probably the 2nd best version of the song behind only hendrix himself
Man, a fantastic rendition, anyway, but such a special highlight, when he gets into that immense powerful hitting the guitar, over and over again, at 4:39 and the way the drummer goes along with it. So intense, it totally moves me.
Stevie, not particularly an attractive man, but the way he handles that axe of his, and the raw excitement of a great song done by the other master that I am not worthy of, well, quite frankly, makes me errr.. in the mood.............
stevie ray was one flambouyant dude. u match that with his gifted guitar skills, and u say who will come along since the likes of stevie ray vaughn? Nobody!! God bless u man! RIP.
can anyone find the video where he does the solo at 2:07 AND shakes a dudes hand at the same time? I remember seeing it one time and haven't been able to find it since
uhhh... a lot of people should no that wen he did this live show he was on drugs. thats y hes really nervous and sweating. plus notice he voice is a little messed up at the begining.
unbelievable to think that he did more than 7 grams of coke a day at one point eh? then he turns it around, makes good on everything and cleans up, then drunk pilots crash him into a ski hill, life's a bitch eh
Amazing

@guitar620 lol im sorry but jimmy actually made this song. but still srvs is bloody awsome.

@guitar620 by far

@guitar620 yeah generally - but jimmy is the blueprint without jimmy they is no SRV they are both dirty as F>>> tho!
theREALpromised1 1 year ago
@guitar620 spell Jimi correct thank you. I like both. Two different tones.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@guitar620 Jimi's Voodoo Child is like a Picasso painting. Every second of that song is perfect. SRV comes close, but nobody will ever play it like Jimi did.

@guitar620 You're smoking crack. Hendrix can never be beat.
RebelThoughts 1 year ago
@guitar620 Stop comparing people. I hate that. I love both Jimi and SRV. You can't just say one's better. Stevie's got the Texas Tone and soul and Jimi's just got raw passion....They are both so unique. It's been said a million times but just don't compare people. We all have are opinions and just cuz one person likes the sound of one better doesn't make it better.

@guitar620 cleaner and meaner. just the way i like 'em. (that sounded kinda creepy, but you get the point.)
srvaughan121 11 months ago
Its way better then Jimmy. He makes Jimmy's version slow and boring.
DENBOSCH123 2 years ago
@DENBOSCH123 "Slow and boring", thats controversial. Well, there wouldnt be this without "Slow and boring". So shut up, Jimi made the song, SRV put his twist on it, no matter what, Hendrix made the song. So "Slow and boring" makes "way better".
And P.S. Learn to spell *Jimi* Hendrix please, fuckin tools who slate him, and cant even spell his name right.
062829648 2 years ago
dont do this, jimmys version is best, i like stevies more but you cant do this to jimmy he doesnt deserve it.
whackyshackyidiot 2 years ago
Did you see the version of Hendrix at Woodstock? I think they have pretty equal energy in the song compared to this one. You might like how he plays it slightly faster then.
Derekober 2 years ago
@DENBOSCH123
Why do people keep hearing a cover that might be better than the original and think that means the covering artist must be better? It an awesome cover but he's just learnt it and put his own style to it. Actually writting it is 100 times more work and 100 times more an acheivment. Why don't people not get this?
nomis101uk 2 years ago
@nomis101uk Its about performance - Simon Cowell wrote numerous hit songs, but does anyone want to see him perform them? Writing words on paper is NOT 100 times more difficult than making people feel something when they hear the music - both Jimi and Stevie Ray could do that and then some, some people just like one more than the other as an ARTIST
aaronetics 1 year ago
@aaronetics You think writting a song like voodoo child is just "writting words on paper"?...wow...ok. Just wow.
And I guess if I learnt the violin and put on a stella performance of Pagannini's 24th caprice that makes me as talented as Pagannini himself then? Brilliant. You know I play a pretty mean Scuttle Buttin'! I guess I must be almost as great as SRV.
nomis101uk 1 year ago
@nomis101uk wow you missed the point...somebody out there might actually like your version of Scuttle Buttin', and actually think you are a "better" artist than SRV...granted, that person's probably going to be your wife, mom, or best friend, but for them, the experience you created by playing that song was "better" for them than watching SRV's video - get it? And for some people, yes-writing songs is easier than playing them. Wow.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
while not as good as jimi (i mean, who is?), he certainly does this song justice. Probably the 2nd best version of the song behind only hendrix himself

Man, a fantastic rendition, anyway, but such a special highlight, when he gets into that immense powerful hitting the guitar, over and over again, at 4:39 and the way the drummer goes along with it. So intense, it totally moves me.

got the chance to see him perform months before he died at the David Letterman 8th anniversary special in Studio City, Ca. he was awesome!

Stevie, not particularly an attractive man, but the way he handles that axe of his, and the raw excitement of a great song done by the other master that I am not worthy of, well, quite frankly, makes me errr.. in the mood.............
