This is soooo cooool! I CAN unserstand why they reshot the ending, but I still think it's a shame. This ending looks like it cost a fortune to make, and they didn't use alot of it. Ah well, that's Hollywood. This would be so cool in 3D! Thanks for posting it!!
@NaughtyRoxie8895 Yes, the song IS titled "Don't Feed The Plants". I was in a production of "Little Shop of Horrors" around 1991. I remember i was in the general chorus, and I was in this scene. I was entangled by The Plant's vines. It was alot of fun! This is absolutely one of my favorite shows!
Ah well, migrate to europe every one! Or any island! Or Anything they would have to cross major water to get to! Plants cant survive in water, most can any how. The guy used a gun. Probably, if I know this modern age, and movies of that period, they will end up using atomic bombs. Probably something better you could do. A HUGE, HUGE Canon shooting shrapnel and blades at a close distance might to the trick, for one small one!
How about flamethrowers? I reckon fire would be a most effective method of destroying the plants. And as you mentioned, the Plants can't leave North America, so get everybody off (the population is bound to be smaller than it used to be, what with so many people getting eaten) and bomb the things off the face of the Earth. The human race can still be saved...but even if the Plants are beaten, that won't bring Audrey and Seymour back. And that is why I prefer the other ending.
hmm...i just thought of something...now that 3d is more common and available...maybe a remake (with this ending of course) would be a good idea...or would they just screw it up somehow? sigh...idk...
wow I just remembered there are 3 endings to this film
1. this one the orginal
2. the one were seymor shocks it to death
3. adrey 2 relises buds and in each bud a face of one of the people he eats shows up then audrey gets eaten by audrey2 seymor finds out you can't kill audrey 2 from the outside so he jumps in with an axe and kills it from the inside out then the last bud blooms to show seymors face
I don't really prefer one ending over the other but the real shame is how much of these classic special effects were wasted, and after filming all this they still should have gone with the original ending.
Really interesting idea for an ending (I don't care about the play, no offense) but it really does NOT play well. The moment with the plant eating Audrey was really tragically beautiful and Paul Dooley's bit was scary as hell... But after that, it's an utter failure.
Audrey deciding "feed me to the plant" made her look insane (and the plant took over the world, so they cheapened the drama of that moment- her death meant nothing), the scenes of the plant destroying the cities were cartoonish and look ridiculous, and it would take a huge leap of logic to believe this.
If Seymour got rich for mass producing the plants... What the hell could a new plant offer someone in exchange for blood to make it grow?? What would have happened instead is that the plants would had to have eaten / taken bites out of household pets to get large. Also- why would so many people want the same plant? A ton of people would have gotten tired of it and thrown them away (leading the plant to eat / bite animals outside) like the baby alligator trend. This ending really does not work.
@FourFliesDVD ......ok....the film is about a singing plant from outer space....if you can believe that then you cant have much trouble believing that they take over the world!
@LonesomePine369 - I meant that for the ending to work, we have to believe that all the people owning the plants would have the same experiences (feeding it blood), all be unsuspecting, and between the all of them- not realize they're being had. But my main argument is that the tone of the film up 'til this ending doesn't support it. I mean, for this to be acceptable at all, we must view the filmmakers as terrorists. Or this as a very real allegory to something. But, what? Reaganism?
Yeah, I know I should shut up. Because I am a huge fan / believer in the 1970's ambitious / intelligent horror films with really sadistic scenes of horror and social implications. I should appreciate this for how highly disturbing it is. Seriously, this scene is really pushing buttons. This is not fun in any way. And it certainly makes a statement about conformity, commercialism, and shows us how much of a deathtrap our cities and industrial towns are. But MAN does this rub me the wrong way.
@FourFliesDVD This ending is the actual ending to the stage play (which came before the film), rather than the sappy rom-com ending they tacked on in the original release of the movie. The play wasn't making a statement other than to be a satire of B-Horror Flicks. Hence why the plants take over in the end. It's not made to make sense, it's made to parody bad horror films, that's all.
@FourFliesDVD ...well this ending was in all the stage productions of it...and..O.o...uhh...terrorists? soooo the directors of Godzilla movies are terrorists? :P
I'm not so keen on the "Don't Feed the Plants" song. It just doesn't fit in as well with all the other music in the film, and it really doesn't work with the footage either. Had the song been more along the musical style of "Mean Green Mother", or even something with a more horror-tinged tone, it would have worked quite well. This just sounds like glittery 80's camp - way too lighthearted for the footage, and not at all fitting with the era it's meant to be set in.
@GlitterySpleen - are you sure it's really that 80's? I can't honestly recall anything I've heard from the 80's that reminds me of this sound. I mean- are you thinking something along the lines of Donna Summer's "She Works Hard for the Money" or Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters"? (Sorry those are the only two I could come up with, I'm drawing blanks now)
I have been wanting to watch this ending for years and I have to say you did a fantastic job thanks a lot for giving us all the opportunity to see this in such an excellent edit. Great job!
@The2010SnowDay I used the Logo filter with a shot from the outtake, and another image of a black outline so it knew which bits to cover completely with colour and which bits to only slightly cover so you could still see the greek chorus
Interesting thing is that they looked like they spent ALOT of money doing those final sequences, I wonder if they made that back when it came out all those years ago.
the first part is from the workprint, the cleaned up bit is from the original off-broadway soundtrack cd, available on amazon, from "where you live" is from the theatrical soundtrack cd. Then for the final part with "hold your head and hang onto your soul" I thought the soundtrack version was a bit week so mixed it with the one from the workprint, which makes it less legible but has more oomf
much better ending.. just found this online... David Geffen retained the rights to the alternate ending, and reportedly he did not give permission for its inclusion on the DVD disc; in February 1998 he had Warner Bros. issue a recall of the DVD version, which is now very rare.
@bmjb276 same here!!! And it is more meaningful to the story than the happier one. Do you think Seymour deserved to live happily every after with Audrey after committing those bad deeds??
it's 1m29s and starts from "they may offer you fortune and fame" 2:00 then it drops to a silent point after "here I come for you" 2:50 then it has the last 37 seconds of the song which on the video starts at 5:57
I think next time I do an edit of this I would probably cut the lyricless part of the rampage from 3 minutes down to 1 minute 30. As people I have shown it to still think it's too long, in the workprint it was 3m10s
But at 0:54 (The second "Subsequent to the Events") until 2:00 sounds like a CD version of the opening to Finale Ultimo. I have seen that Finale Ultimo is listed as 1m29s on the CD, but I can't see where the opening would fit. Is it included in the Mean Green Mother track?
Ah that's from the original off-broadway soundtrack album, it has the entire thing from the first subsequent, I would have used the whole first part of the song but I was worried about lip sync. Also annoyingly the 'boom' comes DURING "where you live" rather than after as it does in the film, so as you can see at 1:59 there's two booms, where it switches to the start of the 1986OST version of finale ultimo.
Meep, that's actually sort of a problem I had when I initially watched this ending years ago in workprint form. The instrumental break was just too long, and I think that might have been because they never finished editing it down.
Still, nice reconstruction. o: The flag was a nice touch.
I have actually made a new edit of this part of the end which trims the finale footage so from the taxi being flipped till the screen goes black it's only 2m26s long rather than 3m27s as it is here. Cutting out all the shots of buildings falling down for no reason, various people running and just generally trimming it.
Well I wondered about that but I just cut the instrumental down (which is pretty easy as it repeats specific bits over and over) luckily I still had my Sound Effect Track isolated (the workprint has no sound effects) so it was simply a case of cutting the music down a minute or so then cutting out footage to fit so that it joins back up at the end. I will upload it soon.
I think you'd have to reshoot the film and make Seymour more over the top and goofy like in the play, and to actually directly kill people, to make the ending more comedic.
I see. Maybe I could create some storyboards (that is if I had the talent) to make Seymour's death be more heroic just like in the play. What do you think?
Great job with the reconstruction of the original ending! I have been curious about the ending ever since I found out that I could've owned a copy of the Special Edition DVD years ago, but I didn't think it was any different than the VHS copy I owned at the time.
