@SkateNater non sai che cosa dici, capisco che una interpretazione possa piacerti più di un'altra, ma dire che Cecilia Bartoli massacri quest'aria mi sembra francamente eccessivo e sicuramente falso.
By far & away the best version of this aria on youtube .. I think it's stunning! some people are not easily pleased it would seem! The coloratura is accurate, she stands *still*, her voice is even, her facial expressions are appropriate and expressive, what's not to like? She has quite a small voice, but most very flexible voices are smaller .. and as for the suggestion that this aria is for countertenors .. i would challenge anyone to find anything as good as this (and share if you do!!) :)
shes no cecilia bartoli but i must say she sounds wonderful her interpretation was great and i enjoy her voice she reminds me of cecilia alot but i still enjoy cecilia's interpretation much better...lol
Yes, her technique are superior to Bartoli, but She`s deform the aria with her extreme colorature! This aria is for a mezzo or conuntertenor, not for this soprano deformation !
Well, this aria was actually written for a castrato (or should I say, THE castrato, Farinelli). So in actual fact, there is no 'correct' approach in term of vocal range. It is perfectly acceptable for either a mezzo or soprano to interpret this aria.
Bartoli's photocopy . Voice and fast coloratura based on nothing, musical variations totally out of style (showing complete ignorance of Broschi's style), no expression at all. This lady is developing her career on recitals and on CD (last one, Rossini's arias, having performed ONLY one Rossini opera on stage and having sang in just two operas). I do hope Dame Te Kanawa will work on her because I do believe she isn't able to sing the most simple piece based on the WORD at the very moment! BW
@MisterPapageno Exactly. athletics competitions on the sport arena, Guinnes World record of coloratura speed. But I hope that i will changing, she will be more mature artist, she is very young. I dont know anything about her wocal skills when she was 15 or 14 , I wish I would listen to it and compare.
@MisterPapageno After criticism of female voice - women can be proud of Deborah York singing Haendel's Gloria. It is exemple of incredible beautifull, excellent, perfect female voice. I wish women sung more frequently in that manner...
@llamala2010 Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like she's singing outdoors. If she sang without a microphone the sound would all dissipate into the air (and I say this without any disrespect to her very fine and focused voice!) It's just normal -- even large choirs and orchestras performing outdoors have to be miked to concentrate the sound toward the audience. Indoors, she would definitely not need anything to project her sound, but outdoors, anybody would!
Who cares if she is 20, 30 years old? Who cares if she pulls her hair back to look younger? False info, true info, who cares? All that is superficial.... What it all comes down to is if she can execute or not! She has an amazing voice. Makes it look almost effectless. When you close your eyes, its all about the voice!
I totally agree with @countertenourJ. Expression here is secondary. It is just a pity that she did not go further in the Da Capo. I would expect much better than what she did at 6:50 and on.
@Desideria7 No she is 20 in this video Kiri Te Kanawa named her protege at only 21 years old last year at the classical Brit awards ;) She is supper talented for one so young!
@classicalgalNYC Everyone can false the passport, look at her face and how she puts her hair to make the skin look smoother and the face younger. Western people are too credulous, Russian opera ladies to 99% are liars.
Wow!!! Beautiful timbre, I love the way her coloratura sounds...I wanna mary her, do a Biology student - who doesn't know nothing about music - like me stand any chance? lol
Merci pour cette vidéo : on entend trop souvent des chanteurs qui ornementent à outrance et oublient la ligne vocale. Il me semble que la ligne vocale est superbe ici ; juste une réserve pour certains aigus un peu tirés
A rarity in voices, so effortless in all registers, clear but all both high and low. Nothing shy in techniques either! At rate, what will this voice become in just a few years?! a true soprano sfogato
A rarity in voices, so effortless in all registers, clear but all both high and low. Nothing shy in techniques either! At rate, what will this voice become in just a few years?!
Never heard a better rendition of this aria I think , congratulationss Julia!! So young , perfect technique , very expressive singing , I hope you become a regular recording artist , the composers would be thankful ;)
I do not understand why these fanatics use Bartoli as a measure of good singing against singers who can actually outsing her.
She's a diva yes, she's dusted off obscure works yes but she's technically faulty in 99% of her singing. Her technique is based of weird staccati aspirati, glottal attacks, vibrato caprino and muscular tension.
Look and listen to this girl: flawless legato in the volatine, perfect emission, floating sound, she's never in the throat, she's never tensing the muscles.
it's not so slow (look at Bartoli's version, more or less it's the same duration), you get this effect because of the orchestra, which plays quite plainlz and without any push forward.
Let's hope that she will manage to gain in expressivity (and a bit in control) without losing that purity of the voice and the effortless coloraturas.
This is my second comment here, which is about another comment made by someone else. I don't think Ms Lezhneva is the next Cecilia Bartoli for two very simple reasons: the first is the fact that one should not even attempt to compare the voices, which are quite distinct and as such incomparable. Secondly, Ms Bartoli has achieved excellence - she's able to do whatever it is that she wants with her amazing voice and superb technique. Ms Lezhneva is a supernova - a star that's just come into being.
BRAVA!!! BRAVA!!! The only thing I didn't like was the difference between the tempos (see beginning and end). It would have been much more consistent and nicer to the year had the tempo been kept as presto as it is supposed to be all the way through.
Bella voce, ottima tecnica. Le manca l'esperienza della presenza scenica; la relativa nespressività del viso mi fa pensare che non conosca la traduzione di ciò che canta in italiano. Ma farà strada, se lo merita
Who cares about her facial expression. I want to hear her - and I hear joy. She perfomes this beautiful aria just perfectly. As wylltwalia said: masterful!
listening to this video one cannot avoid to appreciate the immensely greater expression of the Giardino Armonico, this orchestra is just playing the notes. Regarding the singing, I won't make the comparison with Bartoli, they are completely different styles. She's very good, wonderful coloraturas, a great trill, very nice ornamentation in the da capo and she manages also to squeeze some interpretation. I would like to hear her without micro, though.
She is very talented, I enjoyed her performance very much. It was slower than the Cecilia Bartoli version and she didn't make so big gestures, just standing on the stage moveless, but this is the orderly way to sing a piece of classical music.
@bonusgabor I think she's got a fantastic facial expression. besides is the expression on her voice what should matter, at the end that's the transcendental aspect of a singer. Cecila Bartolli seems to me, at times, grotesque and somehow annoying, though her voice is fantastic.
@hopelesslyinlovedu I agree to the point that the facial expressions should be of the utmost importance. I, however, must disagree that her facial expressions are great for this piece. The first half is about being alone, scared and confused -- due to being lost amid rocks and the storm. The second section is about seeing one's lover on the shore and feeling at peace and safe. I cannot tell this by her facial expressions; therefore, storytelling failure.
@CountertenorJ I do not put much stock in facial expression when it comes to Broschi, who is more about vocal dexterity than any emotional depth - Lezhneva's performance is simply ...masterful
@wylltwalia I understand your viewpoint, but sadly, I can only agree to it via audio recording. I'm American and many know we aren't the most lingually impressive society, so having very adequate acting skills (especially facial expressions) helps to convey meaning and message to a type of music that is often highly misunderstood.
Beautiful voice, but she does better on the slow pieces like "Alto Giove". Some difficulty with breathing and keeping a steady voice during coloratura, but then again she's only 21. In a couple of years' time she'll be perfect.

now, how do you get her to do this with a band playing on gut? lolz

Gosh.... just unbelievable. So wonderful... This is the first time ever, this aria made me cry. The Castrato-music suits her voice more than perfect... just like it was written for her. I´m speechless... THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS!!!
