i know what the function of a cam is but what advantages does an aftermarket one give you? also, i hear the lope in an aftermarket one, what is that caused by?

Valve overlap is when both the intake and exhaust valves are open.

Valve overlap is the event where both the intake valve and exhaust valve are partially open at the same time. This creates the "chop" noise at idle. The longer both valves are open at the same time (more valve overlap) the more choppy the cam will be at idle!

simply put, the after market cams have larger and possibly differently shaped lobes... opening the valves for longer periods of time etc... allows for better flow basically, like most mods do
