that actually might be a "black dragon". at least i believe that is the common term for them, as far as i could see the markings were the same and they are close relatives to the water monitor if im not mistaken. but a different species none the less. if this is so, this was a rare sight from what i have heard. But this was definitely not a Asian water monitor, nor a water monitor which there is a difference in markings and temperament. i own an asian water monitor personally.
yes, I like that idea... tie a mouse to a string... that has potential. Let me think up something along those lines... thanks for idea!
And yes, these things are very nasty. I'm really glad they run away when they see me because if they attacked - I'd NEVER go into the jungle here. Some of them are 2+ meters. Biggest one I saw in Bangkok in lumpini park - well - about 4 of them - 7 feet... walking around people during a running race. I was freaked - first time in bkk. Everyone else ignored them
yeah, exactly... the motorbikes we have in Thailand are usually like this - souped up mopeds. This is 115cc. It goes 115-120km/hr. About 70mph max. They're fun - but not near as fun as a 2-stroke 125 or 150 like I had before we moved. Quite possibly getting a cbr 150 as I found one used. 4-stroke, but better control than these things!
that might be a mertens' water monitor, they are considerably smaller than the asian/malayan water monitors, and look a little different

I looked it up and found a number of sites calling it a Malayan Water Monitor... it does look at bit different from the Asian water monitors...
