  • Liver biopsy confirms the diagnosis and shows lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltrates often with granuloma formation.

At a later stage, there is portal tract fibrosis and cirrhosis.

  • Ninety percent of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) are women present in their fifth decade. Aetiology is unknown.

    The pruritis precedes the jaundice.

    PBC is associated with

    Sjogren's syndrome

    Polyarthralgia

    Autoimmune thyroiditis

    Hypercholesterolaemia.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is present in 70% of cases.

Serum antimitochondrial antibodies are usually positive.

  • My Husband has recently been diagnosed with Hep C & stage 4 cirrhosis of his liver. His doctor has prescribed Alpha Interferon & Rabivarin treatments. He also is a type 2 diabetic. He is 60 years old. I would like to know if there are any new treatments for this condition as it appears to be extremely harsh and does not show a high percentage of a positive outcome. Can you please help?

  • Nice teaching tool.Thanks a bundle.

  • @XxNAZOx There is no cure, there is only management. A liver transplant is an option for liver failure, but it may reoccur in the new liver. There is a group on facebook for PBC patients.

  • how could the dermatologist miss pbc as a differential for pruritis???

  • @saiedz Unless she was jaundiced it is likely that they didn't consider liver disease as a factor.

  • i found out today that i have a disease called Gilbert's Disease

  • im 13 and my mother has pbc and the sadness has filled my heart but i hope thers something we could do besides the medicine.... i think what would i do without her but i guess god only knows but i guess no one is eternal and things happen for a reason..

  • I was diagnosed with PBC a year ago which lead to me having a liver transplant 6 months ago. During that time i've had two liver biopsies (both by ultrasound guided needle). I was given a local anaesthetic and the actual biopsies were very easy and almost painless (i'd give it a pain rating of 3 out of 10). The anxiety beforehand is much more stressful than the actual biopsy.

  • my wife has pbc . she was only 28 ? isnt that to young for this issue . normaly the age for this is 40 and over ? she did have the biopsy done and for her it was very painful . but i did hear a simple blood test is all you need . the biopsy is done mostly to make guess what money . money money.

  • Cirrhosis can happen at even 18 years of age. There are many reasons for being diagnosed with cirrhosis, alcoholism just so happens to be the main contributing factor, but many people get it simply not from alcohol.

  • PBC is not alcohol related.

  • A biopsy is done so they can make a positive diagnosis for PBC and to test liver function. This cannot be done by a blood test unfortunately. It's nothing to do with making money.

  • hey, um, no. Blood tests don't always reveal PBC unfortunately. Believe me, I wish there was an easier way to diagnose than biopsies. Around 5% of people with PBC test negative on the bloodtests.

  • I love natural light.

  • Argh... mine was quite painful. Definitely one of the more painful things ive had done. I had mine done yesterdayt . And I couldnt even MOVE PERIOD for 5 hours after words. It hurt a lot lol.

  • Yea, mine did too. :(

  • I had one, and it didn't hurt at all. I didn't even feel it

  • I did not find the liver biopsy painful. The only pain was in my right shoulder after the procedure, which the nurses explained is caused because the biopsy needle goes through a cluster of nerves that refers pain to the shoulder. The worst part of the whole thing was the anxiety beforehand, and the uncomfortable IV that had to be put into my hand because I have small veins.

  • i agree i had a liver biopsy 13 years ago & DONT want another!, but i do think Dr Palmer knows her stuff.

  • I MUST disagree with the doctor. I have had a liver biopsy and never let anyone tell you they DO NOT hurt. Oh yes they do...terribly. But it is best to have it done no matter how much discomfort you feel.
