After the small violin solo, her next phrase vanishes into nothing.
It is perfect.
It is not a traditional, gradual, dramatic descendo--rather her voice simply disappears into nothing. It is the voice of a soul passing into another world.
@madnessjason Well stated, I feel similarly about the trumpet segment. I am a tuba player and I appreciate low brass more but those chords at 0:32 always play with my emotions.
Janet Baker was so good in Mahler! CDs are now surfacing, often from radio broadcasts, where she was the soloist in Resurrection or Das Lied. Any conductor with half a brain wanted Janet Baker! In fact to me, it says a lot about a conductor that they would want Janet Baker.
Primeval Light O red rose! Man lies in greatest need! Man lies in greatest pain! How I would rather be in heaven. There came I upon a broad path when came a little angel and wanted to turn me away. Ah no! I would not let myself be turned away! I am from God and shall return to God! The loving God will grant me a little light, Which will light me into that eternal blissful life!

Sublime, sublime and thrice sublime! 00.01 to 02.43 are just perfect...in my humble opinion the finest recording of this part of the symphony. Janet Baker and Gustav "Mahler are a match made in heaven.
One of my two favorites and probably #1 although it's close. The other is Maureen Forrester. Both are magnificent. Thanks for this entire symphony. Whenever I need a lift, this is where I turn. The 4th and 5th movements are about the best thing in all of classical music.
This performance shows why Dame Janet was so special. She sings off the words, perfect colour, tone , diction and facial expression. She is inspired by the music of a great heart, Gustav Mahler!
Perfect. Totally brilliant in every way. A perfect combination of artists (Mahler, Baker, and of course Bernstein) making an absolutely heavenly sound.
I absolutely agree with all the positive comments here - Dame Janet was matchless! But, for a current young mezzo's interpretation, have a look at Jeanette Ager with the London Mozart Symphony on one of the "Related Videos" here on Youtube. Unfortunately the comments facility has been disabled, but you can still marvel at her performance - the heiress to Dame Janet, or what?!
Dame Janet Baker demonstrates how an interpret can be musically and emotionally involved. Her phrasing with legato emulates wonderful colors in each single word. It is if she is telling us a story. Thank you for posting this beautiful video !

@jtwildoats Bernstein and Janet Barker? The only thing that could possibly be better is if Mahler himself were conducting.

There are only two singers who really touch my heart with that piece: Christa Ludwig und Janet Baker.
Bravo!

I am deeply touched by this. It will soon be played by the Milwaukee Symphony in honor of my friend who performed with them for 35 years.

Very moving and first class interpretation. No 'operateks' but a small and delicate. That's just how it should be played in my opinion.
