Sheri451: the B&W "Gunsmoke" episodes are on Encore Westerns. The half-hour shows from 1955-1961 were just added, with the original title and not the pasted-on "Marshall Dillon" substitute.
I always understood that Burt Reynolds' time on the show was earlier in the run, and that he left to co-star with Darren McGavin in RIVERBOAT. Could someone clarify when his stint was.
I would like to see the B&W episodes of Gunsmoke. Or as Susan Oleson told Sherwood Schwartz (May he rest in peace) Gunthmoke. I believe the Brady Bunch children said they were on the Gunsmoke set when they did the first part of Grand Canyon Or Bust. Sus an Oleson did an episode of Gunsmoke when she was five. As I said she lisped to Mr Schwartz 'I wath on a Gunthmoke, with a horth (horse) and a thake (snake). He thought she was so adorable he hired Susan on the spot as Cindy Brady.
I was very small when it was on the air in 64. Arness will be missed. It is also pleasing he wrote a message in event of his death thanking the fans of his tv shows.
Hey hollywood you folks really need to do this show again. It was always popular but james arness just got to old to saddle up. It would probably be a hit all over again. Big money for someone.
I cannot say thank you enough for posting this! I have been looking for this end theme for a long, long time. I had the last 27 seconds of it on VHS, that I taped in 1989, and, thankfully made a copy of the audio track, at the time. I never knew what year it was from, but, thanks to you, I no longer have to wonder! Thank YOU!!!!!
What a beautiful memory audiophile55. I recall the same thing in my house with the theme from "The Fugitive" . Hearing te end theme now send shivers on my neck and I can actually recollect our living room just as it was. Great days that have passed.
@snoops71, thanks, then that is I bet one of the longest running show of anykind. The Cartwrights, went from 59-73. Thanks again for you info. They don't have good shows like this anymore. My teenage boys and I watch Gunsmoke together and they love the show.
This was my lullaby on Saturday nights when I was a boy. My parents wouldn't let me stay up that late (10:00) to watch Gunsmoke, but I could stayed awake in bed long enough to hear this version of the theme. I'll bet within 10 seconds after the last note, I was asleep.
@WSenator1 You took the words right out of my mouth. To this day I cannot hear this theme song without thinking it is time to go to bed. Wonderful memories!
This is from the episode "No Hands" [February 8, 1964], sponsored in part by American Home Products' "Whitehall Laboratories" division [Dristan]. The preview at 1:03 is for "next week's" episode, "May Blossom" [February 15], another of those charming "uh oh, here comes ANOTHER one of Festus' relatives!" stories...this one intends to MARRY him,

I just realized how much I miss that program, and how
much we all miss The Country we USED to have to
WATCH IT IN!
Remember? A country called "America", NOT
A "HOMELAND"!

Ye gads, NO! You just know they'd find a way to ruin Gunsmoke if they tried to do a new version these days.

@rajvader After you think about it you are right.Lets not disgrace this classic show with a remake.

Aside from Marshal Dillon and Gunsmoke being badass, that nose spray is still hella good to this day.
