sucks man, looks like the turbo got extremely hot and caught heat insulation on the firewall on fire. that was a clean gti, i'd be crying due to you sstood there watching it burn and nothing you could of done.

this is due to the heat of the turbo, the insulation has had too much heat soak, i bet you had been giving it a good beating just before!..... at least the engine and rims survived!! unlucky dude. better heat proofing and a good extinguisher in the next car eh?  cool mk4 anyway....

learn your lesson: have a decent exstinguisher aboard...and use it properly! I had a fire in my engine..did NOT open all doors and hoods..extinguished through the air holes...result: damage only on the electrical wires...engine and body fine! SO: have an extinguisher aboard. it's worth the 25 bucks a million times!

I don't know if you noticed, but the car was ON FIRE!! Maybe not opening the hood or doors or leaving them open while the car was burning would have slowed the fire enough to save it, but unhooking the battery would have done NOTHING.

that looks as though it was an electrical fire caused by a short in the main harness, i hate to tell you but mechanical engine fires are much more rapid then that. i assure you i have more experience in this field than you. the only other thing i could see causing a car fire that started that slowly would be a small oil leak from the turbo oil feed line, but when the motor was shut off that oil would burn away. the most likely culprit was an electrical fire. anyone whos owned a vw understands
