@laddyboy12 Are we talking traditional turn based? If so, Blue Dragon is the only game that comes to mind. There are other great rpg's for the system, but they don't fall into the traditional turn based rpg format.
FF VI, VII, VIII, Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer, Chrono Trigger... My favourite RPG/Action RPGs... Link to the Past was a good Action RPG too. Hell, even FF IV was great. I prefer the older style medieval era but that doesn't really exist any more and it's sad. The music as well from Nobuo Uematsu played a major role in the FF series that really sucked me into the story and made everlasting memories in my brain. We need these games again. The good 'ol childhood memories.

Speaking of jrpg's, could you name me every jrpg you've played on the 360 that is at least good? I want to get more rpg's this gen. I used to have FF 13 on PS3 and I have Eternal Sonata on PS3 as well(also on 360, but with less content) I am in a real mood for jrpg's and just yesterday, I ordered Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia off Amazon.

Random battles occur more often when you run, since you're causing more sound while moving. You're nitpicking as you say. Also, when it comes to loading times, does everyone fail to think about installing the game to your hdd? It helps with loading times significantly. The story is actually along the same par as FF7's as well, considering there's that "one main villain." Play the game for what it is, not what other people have done. FF13 was terrible compared to this game.
I like the fact that this game DOESN'T have androgynous characters. Why are so many people enamored with girly looking protagonists? Males look like males in this game and girls look like girls(for the most part). That's how it should be.
@veteran0121 Really? Many artists operate under the assumption that gender is a social construct. So, anything from their clothes to their cheek bones becomes sexually ambiguous. Personally, I think the male appearance could be softened - I like a flamboyant male or husky female ... it's endearing. Then again, I guess I'm not very traditional :) But, I understand what you're saying.
@PyroChemicals2 I can usually almost always tell the difference between a Japanese male and a Japanese female. In these video games I can't most of the time(except for this one). Yes I'm Caucasian but if I was any other race I would think the same way. I'm not sure where you are trying to go with this but whatever I don't really care.
@veteran0121 Not only does this game's artwork have more human life form than sameo ld girly anime type art. But they also show real emotions more than any other game ever has. Inoue Takehiko is like the best artist out there.
@futureanimatior I totally agree with you. I won't say I hate the artists that do anime style graphics but this is better IMO than all that anime stuff for sure.

I really thought of trying this, since I neglected to during it's release...but from looking at numerous reviews including this one...it just seems too meh to even try. What is it with JRPG's this gen? FFXIII was so bad it made me replay freakin Xenogears.

Loved the story, when you took the time to read those dreams, the characters were very very fleshed out in my opinion, and also the music was the best since Grandia (best game of all time) But the combat was slow, and the random encouters began to bug me, as you said the Tales series spoiled us. Overall it was a good review as always, even though I don't agree completely.
@DKreviews09 I should make a gold star exchange shop, so if I give out more randomly then people can exchange those for made up things xD. But speaking of the dreams, I completely forgot to mention those, damn human error <_<. But thanks :D.
glad you did a review on this, I really wanted this game before and never got it, but random battles and long load times, and most importantly a just so so story WILL lead me away from an RPG. I'm actually going through some older RPG's now after FF13, going through Star Ocean 2, then Chrono Cross.
@Shintai123 Yeah, I agree, like for me, random battles are fine, but the battle has to be more fast paced in order for me to not mind as much. It's something that didn't bother me a while back with the older final fantasy's and stuff, but it does now for some reason.

@DGenerationX4life Putting in a section about achievements, or even trophies for when I start reviewing ps3 games, isn't something I'm going to do. I give the game a score based on its story, gameplay, and presentation, achievements and trophies are these optional things that don't make or break a game, so doing a section on that would do nothing to contribute to the final score thus making it kind of pointless, that's just how I see it though.
