  • I've seen Glenn live a bunch of times and he never ceases to amaze me, he's got immaculate timing and a great ear for whatever he's playing.

  • 10 idiots think drumming is a new sport where you play as fast and as hard as you possibly can.

  • what the fuck are those wierd snare like wires hang from the drum?

  • @emaculate

nothing you'd be interested in obviously

  • @BongoFury33 what do you mean... this guy kills... i really would like to know what they are. I am a drummer and have never seen them before.

  • @emaculate you should check out the video, Glenn Kotche: the ramayana. he explains what they are.

  • I hate when people say that (some) drummers plays basic shit, or what they think is basic. Terry Bozzio plays basic..? Yeah. Okay.

  • When you think about it they really needed a guy like him there that year because the 2006 festival was full of all the crazy gospel guys (spears, heyward, bruner, etc), to mix things up a bit.

  • Sometimes you are a bit bored with all the superdrummers like Lang playing chops you will never learn. Glenn is a wonderfull musical drummer and luckly playing with Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy, what do you want more !

  • Why the dislikes?

  • i just saw him play with Bang on a Can All-stars as well. it was at the Singeltary Center for the Arts, and was amazing.

  • People dissing this guy need to take some music lessons.

I just saw him play with Bang on a Can All-stars, he was fantastic.

  • Damn

  • keep kickin it

  • Kotche exhibits every aspect of what makes a great drummer truly 'great.' He demonstrates the essence of what separates the Guitar Center "Drum-Off superzeros" from the real 'artists' who get paid to do what they love. Kotche is a genuine artist b/c he approaches his instrument as an instrument. He knows when to shine & when to lay back, becoming the band's driving force & foundation. In other words, he knows how to 'play to the music.' A concept few drummers are even cognizant of.

  • @octoberdays There just isn't anything that draws me to Glenn. I don't dislike him because he's not doing a solo full of blast beats, and thank god he isn't. Everyone that makes metal drum solos think playing blast beats for 5-6 minutes is the only knd of metal drumming out there. But anyway, there just isn't enough there for me to get excited about Glenn. Now, if this were Todd Suchermam we were talking about, I'd be more interested.

  • This guy definitely marched drumline or drumcore or something. Check out his technique.

  • @xXxIFORSAKENxXx I'm fairly sure he did march drum line for a time, he also has a Bachelors Degree in percussion performance from the University of Kentucky.

  • i love all the people bashing his playing, you clearly aren't watching the same video as me.

between the polyrythms, the technique, the taste, and his amazing dynamics, no musician in their right mind could possibly try to down this video.

  • i've never quite heard anything like this before. it is very very unique. i kinda wish i wouldve known about him sooner

  • That was fantastic! Creative, musical, engaging and well thought out.

  • I wasn't sure what to make of this guy. It sounded cool, but If I'm going to pay fifty or sixty dollars for this Modern Drummer Festival dvd, I want to learn something. I didn't feel that I learned anything from Glenn.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC I would, Kotche is far from the best drummers that turned up that year. I particularly loved Steve Smith's Jazz Legacy, very entertaining, and some of the others did amazing clinics as well...when I first saw this guy do his "Monkey Chant" I just thought he was a whack job.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC pay more attention, theres an intense amount of knowledge to absorb from this man.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC i found out about clapping music throuhg glenn...and that's when i found the video clapping music with animation, youtube it if you can't play....it's hard as fuck to learn, but surprisingly it becomes SO simple, i have videos of me playing ostinato's with my feet while playing clapping music, i can also do the first pattern of bleed(herta pattern) under clapping music, but i can never get it clean on all the phrases so i didn't upload that one.

  • I don't understand how he got asked to play at this drumming event. He isn't playing anything really that outstanding.

  • @ThomasMetal75 - why? Because he's not playing blast beats and double bass? Glenn is the most musical drummer in rock these days. He focuses on how to assist the music and feeling, not about stealing the show and doing typical solo stuff. He has more feel and emotion in his pinky finger than most solo drummers out there today. Look up other performances by Glenn.

  • @ThomasMetal75 You are on drugs, and if it's not that outstanding, I'd urge you to duplicate it. Get a clue man, it's not all flash, and I still think that was pretty flashy. Attempt any of those polys, or come up with anything a third as creative, and maybe they'd ask you to come to this festival. Glenn Kotche is incomprable, and perhaps the best in the world, certainly Rock's greatest. Read a theory book, or learn how to read music.

  • @ThomasMetal75

    oh really?

what instrument do you play.... the skin flute?

  • he plays with a beautiful technique

  • Glenn Kotche has absolute control of everything he does... I never see a drummer nail every fill (because every one is thought out). Glenn is easily one of the best drummers in the world. There are a million Thomas langs - but only one Glenn Kotche.

  • holy shit this guys style its sooo......amazing

  • strange guy....

  • nope....just creative and innovative

  • yes of course...but strange :P I didn't say that he's not creative or innovative

  • is his left stick the other way round during the performance?

  • What is he opening at 2:41?

  • cricket sounding boxes i think

  • something like mice in boxes :P

  • I had heard from admirers this guy was good, but I get why now!

  • incredibly creative... i think i admire wilco even more now...

  • Glenn is insane. He's one of the most musical drummers I've ever heard. His work with Wilco is beyond creative. The beats he lays down, the sticks and voicings he chooses, it's all very unique. His work on the self titled album, "Wilco", may be some of his finest work to date. Unbelievable player, huge inspiration.

  • I think its really clever how he applys steve guich's composition to the a solo for the drumset

  • What's a phase piece?

  • Damn this guy is good

  • that looks really hard..

  • It's great to see creative players like this...

  • Watch this video without sound, his transitions are flippn' awesome

  • weird but cool

  • grozno!

  • Get this dvd i have it it rocks!

  • nice, ghostly notes!

  • I flippin' love this guy.

  • saw him playing some stunning stuff with Neil Finn in London last week so looked him up - truly original drummer (but I still want to be Gavin Harrison)

  • godamn his style is so weird!

  • but i fucking love...i think up shit like this all time but im never good enough to pull of what i think up...that's why i wish i had a loop station

  • it doesnt look like he is playing half the time

  • Is it just me or does the cowbell part sounds like boom boom pow by the black eyed peas?

  • You mean Boom Boom Pow sounds like the cowbell part, if at all.

  • lol

    very tight guy :)

    lol

  • this guy is a k custom special dry fanatic

  • cool !

  • What is that he opened up wit the chirping sounds?

  • I would like to think those are boxes with crickets in them, but I sort of doubt that.

  • they are crickets! he uses them for his solo stuff.

  • he got a lot of guts playing those basic beats there...!!..

  • Basic?!?! Are you joking?! He may not be playing like thomas Lang, but what he's doing is far from basic.

  • Well if its 2006 MD, i would say Dave Dicenso was D drummer that really kicked ass in that event.. just my little opinion..

  • @IfIfsandands fuck thomas lang. cool stick tricks but hes a nobody in comparison to alot of drummers

  • @Genecidedrummer read my words properly, you'll see that I am totally backing up Glen. I think he's great.

  • play Heavy Metal Drummer!!

  • for those who dont know what that means..its a wilco song...

  • brilliant.....those are crotales....high and low octaves...these are exact pitch similiar to piano....and allow the drummer to play full on melody.....compositional skills and taste....this guy has it, and studied and worked hard to get there...i hear he graduated from U of Kentucky with a degree in classical percussion...shows just whats possible with knowledge and application. This stuff helps one be individual. I cant think of a single that sounds like him. A real fresh sound. Great Glenn

  • Smokin' hot !

  • lol splash symbals much? look to his left hes got like 30 splash cymbals

  • They're crotales fella tuned like a glockenspeil

  • Those are crotales (aka. antique cymbals), not spashed cymbals. They're tuned to speciifc pitches.

  • He must keep crickets in that box he just uncovered.

  • lol. u ppl posting comments r mean. funny, but mean. lol

  • it is cool but i feel like he smells bad for some reason

  • then stop taking your laptop into the bathroom

  • que desagradable el sonido de su batería. Muy buena técnica de todos modos.

  • the faggot of drumming..?

  • come on mate, lift it... By it I mean that rock you've been living under for the last century :P

  • un grande!!

  • The man is a machine!!!

  • His style is more jazz than rock. I honestly dont know how Wilco stays together as a band. The are all so different musically. There must be some great fights during recording sessions. I would love to see one!!!!!

  • dude, that is not at all jazz drumming.really good though.

  • it dosnt matter what style your based in. it comes down to how well you can play the song at hand and glen has to be one of the best at doing that in a very tasteful way.

  • This guy has a power to his drumming. You can't help but feel it

  • It's always good to hear someone both original and talented.

  • Please die now.

  • whats that tune at 4:17 its near the beginning as well?

  • I LOVE this

  • i hate independence solos...

  • That wasn't a drum solo. It was a musical statement.

  • where can i get the sheet music on this to really see what he's doing ?

  • Did you not see what he was doing with your eyes already?

  • dumbfuck.

    listen.

Watching what he's playing and reading it are obviously two different things. Sheet music would make it far easier to study and scrutinize the beat.

  • You can use your ears to already know what he's doing. The sheet music is useless in my opinion.

  • RIGHT your opinion!

  • You're obviously not a golfer.

That's like saying you should just be able to watch a Nels Cline guitar solo and have it figured out. Besides, with the relatively poor quality of YouTube videos, the sheet music will tell you exactly what he's hitting and when.

  • Sorry I'm just self-taught and never learned how to read music. Didn't mean any offense.

  • Big Lebowski reference FTW

  • print off a blank sheet and fill it in u baby

  • You're right. It's hard to make out what he's doing by seeing it or listening to it. That's why it's important to learn to read music. It does make working stuff out a lot easier. I'm guessing you read and if you do, you are well aware that only musicians that know they should read but don't because they can't or are afraid to, are always the ones that will say 'you don't have to read to learn', I used think that too, before I learnt how!

  • Come check us out on the Fear of None channel follow the name back to our site!!!!!

  • he def. marched corps

  • wow , this guy is ridiculous ...how cool was his hi hat lead in at 4:19 ...

  • The independence of motion is great and I dig the musicality of his approach. He's very much a percussionist.

That being said--and I'm sure I'll be reviled for saying it--there's just something about his technique that just bugs me. It's too soft and tap-tap-tappy. Lay into it, man!

  • After a couple more viewings, I've decided that his elbows are driving me up the wall too. Looks like he's doing the Funky Chicken...not that's there's anything wrong with that--I love Rufus Thomas!

  • can some ppl still say travis is the best??

  • travis who?

  • to be the best drummer is a laughable concept, what would you base it on? What would make number two the number 2, I agree with you!, to say someone is the best in a particular style of drumming is more plausable, but the best drummer, I'm not sure it exists, because you have to ask the question "best at what?"

  • A versatile drummer who is extremely skilled at all styles. Just what I'd use as my basis. But no, I don't have an opinion for best drummer.

  • Antonio Sanchez ;)

  • Thanks for the voice of reason! You should post this every where on you tube someone else declares anyone is 'the best'.

  • You can hear his harmony between his two hands that he was talking about in his playing. Cool concept. I must learn it!

  • I only heard about this guy whe I read about him in Modern Drummer magazine. He is a very good very skilled player. He is really cool.

  • that was some good drummin!

  • It's nice to see a player who keeps drumming an art and not a sport. I love it.

  • Full ack. He's a real inspiration!

  • lol glenn is such a stoner :)

  • your a stoner

  • yes, as a matter of fact i am. so is my bud mark fleshman who smoked with glenn in college at UK.

  • Even though no one sounds like Glenn Kotche but Glenn Kotche, I definitely hear some Max Roach influences in his playing.

  • The guy is so musical. More drummers (and musicians) should take a cue from him. I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform with Wilco and each time I am more and more amazed.

  • I have a pair of his drumsticks! :D

I had always wanted to learn how to play an instrument, and when I heard his percussion/drumming, I decided that I loved the sound and I wanted to play percussion. And now I love percussion.

So...Thanks Glenn! You are my inspiration!

  • im so glad hes in wilco :) haha

  • damn!

    really good

    why isn't he more famous

  • Does anyone know the name of the song?

  • I'll fuck u up ged! What the fuck are you doin watchin drumming vids! Ur a percussionist! oooooooooooooooooo, biatch!

  • your the faggot for posting that comment and wanting to fight like a dumbass would ... get a god damn life !

  • wow.. i love the different sounds and stuff

  • I think he uses Evans heads!

  • This guy was my private teacher for eight years and not only is he an amazing musician, but such a cool and humble dude.

  • The kid's a friggin' genius......

  • Fuck, there are some drummers who just give the drum kit a whole new meaning. It sounds like a fookin' electro ensemble! Brilliant rhythms! can anyone tell me what kind (if any) of electronic stuff he uses? xx

  • It's nice to see a player who keeps drumming an art and not a sport. I love it.

  • hes using Evans heads...according to his website

  • Am I crazy or was he micing a bunch of crickets at the beginning of the solo? Glenn rules!

  • Wow...a fresh of breath air to the drum world...what kind of heads is he using?

  • i agree with you.

  • cool

  • shit man. The drumming world has gone boring to me. It seems like everyone is doing the same things these days. Madd double bass, wacky independance, fast single stroke rolls ...this guy is a breath of fresh air. Someone who actually plays rhythmically and musically for a change. I think alot of drummers are losing sight of the purpose of the drums.

  • word! I left the afro music community some years ago to learn classical percussion music, and with these new perspectives things like this become really cool and fresh.

  • Hey hey!!! Thank you. You're a man after my own heart.

  • glenn kotche is amazing. hes extremely technical in a descrete, rhythmic manner..its just awesome.

  • The point of glens performance is that you dont have to bust out all your chops and show everyone how fast you are to be a good drummer. Glens all about the rythem and groove and thats what drumming is all about. He purpously doesn't show off because hes all about creating MUSIC... and being MUSICAL.. not being a double bass or chop whore. Glens the man.

  • crazy man crazy groove

  • Wow! Yet to see another drummer like him. The way he grooves it just completly completly different from everyone else.

Speaking of everyone else, isn't his setup rather similar to Jon Theodore's? Not all the cow bells and shit, just placement of basics *I.E drums, cymbals, pedals.*

    Keep groovin'.

  • i would LOVE to take a lesson from him.

  • *Sigh* me tooo....♥

  • soooooo sick

  • And by the way genius, if you ever bothered to study Gadd, you know that the motif's Glenn is playing are straight out of his samba paul simon days, so next time do a little research before you knock people who are making accurate factual statements that are complimenting someone else!

  • WOOW ITS ALL STRNGE BUT FOR ME IS GOOD DRUMMER xD !!! BUT I DONT FINE A VIDEO WHERE HE USE THE SPLSHED OR I DONT KNOW WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS HE HAVE ON THE LEFT =O !!!

  • diffrent

  • very thythmic

  • not bad

  • Nicely done. Gadd did similar motif's such as this with late in the evening. Glenn is actually conjuring up motif's from latin/afro cuban drumming world, known as "call & response". I would like to see him take the grooves in more of that direction and elaborate off of it with not just solos, but other ideas that interconnect with the rhythms he's already playing. Sort of a polyrhythmic latin hybrid if you will.

  • Wow - thanks or your expertise. We all appreciate it out here. You're a true expert, and we're thrilled that Glenn played something satisfactory and to your liking. I would imagine you're a music major? Only music majors spew terminology, but rarely can actually perform the things they're referring to. Good luck with your various textbooks.

  • Oh and by the way, this is nothing like anything Gadd has ever played. "I would like to see him...?" - I just reread your comment, and it's more retarded than I thought. Hopefully Glenn will read this and take your advice. Or, he could just go on with his real career and let you finish your major in enthnomusicology.

  • It's true, Jonds was complimenting him. You clearly have some serious anger issues. Plus I agree with him, it did sound like Gadd, and Glenn could have done more with it. Plus, I am a music major getting a musicology degree. I could spew shit you never heard before. But I could also play your ass off. Drums or cello. Bring it sucker

  • Glenn Kotche is amazing... saw him live opening for Jeff Tweedy and it was spectacular! I went out and bought "Mobile" straight away

  • Love this drummer's style.

  • I think this is the future of drumming. I think eventually things will get soo cliche'd in the drumming community and there are a few examples. Blast beat, one handed roll, single stroke roll between the foot and hand... I think this guy is definately the future of drumming, may be a bit ahead of this time, because of the people who don't understand what he's doig and why he doesn't portray his madd lickkzz

  • i agree

  • someone kill angelkf87.

  • u kno, sometimes you go in a music shop and see ppl showing off their strong chops, polyrhythms n intricate techniques (eg. 1-handed 32nd note on hi-hat drum n bass beats), n you think, Wow, wut a great drummer...but then you see guys like Glenn Kotche, Steve Gadd, Jojo Mayer, Danny Carey, Trilok Gurtu, Steve Jordan, Rodney Holmes, Steve Smoth, Dennis Chambers, Stanton Moore, Carter Beauford (I must've missed a lot more)...n you think, wait a minute, still FAR from THE TRUE MASTERS.

  • hes prolly one of the best in the world

  • Wow, the 19 year old genius sure told him! Where's your next gig?

  • I think you misinterpreted me by how my comment was placed on that.

Someone was trying to say that Glenn Kotche's percussion work was boring and I called him a dipshit because in my opinion he has all the qualities of a pro working musician.

And being 19 doesn't mean I can't get gigs...you'd be surprised how easy it is to show up the local bums and get paid good money.
