The M14 will put up with loads if mistreatment and keep going for a long while, but eventually like any mechanism it will fail with lack of care. But if you treat it this good you will be able to pass it onto your kids and they onto theirs.
Today, the M16 system is pretty much all the public sees when they are shown American service rifles. If they are interested to know about the M14, a lot probably stop after reading that the military discontinued it in favor of the M16. They probably write it off as inferior after that, without actually researching why the military switched.

Why dont M14's get more recognition, everyone talks about the all so good M16, id rather have an M14.
