It's a good healthy sounding engine. - but presumably it's cooled by sea water. So just how do you manage to stop the cylinder block cracking when it the sea is freezing?
I have a Volvo MD1 single cylinder diesel and the ice cracked that one winter!
I was not aware it got cold enough to in the UK to freeze salt water. Must have been one hell of a cold winter.
You shoud take steps to avoid freezing in a raw water cooling system. Drain/flush/purge or heat it.
The MD1 is a common sail boat engine here in Canada. The joke is they last forever because the owners refuse to buy fuel lol and they only suffer frost damage or break ( or get broken ) when owned by retired school teachers
Exactly! - northerbrewer has experience with boats and engines. This "racket" as mickeymouse describes it) is not the usual cruising-RPM anyway and on the boat the noice is really not so bad.
Some of these had water added to the exhaustpipe, and therefore nice and quiet. I have one for myself.

I think the point lost is not how quiet ( and I might add these can hushed more ) but trather how reliable and good on fuel.

I have been reading old posts and revissiting videos. I love this boat....
The only thing I love more than a marine diesel is a hot bulb engine.
Times change most non boaters don't get it now and never will
