Chicago audiences have proven time and again that they will applaud anybody on stage, no matter how bad the performance. I guess they're just trying to be respectful. Either that, or they just have bad taste and cannot distinguish one singer from another. The Italians in Italy would be booing when a singer's performance was particularly bad. At least we have good taste. But, after all, this is the Mid-West, and what can you expect? Not exactly the center of the sophisticated world, is it?

That comment is not only offensive but downright ignorant. You judge an entire region, and city, based on their applause of opera singers? I smell bitterness. Sorry to say you're not that insightful nor intelligent, or even "sophisticated." For from it.
"Chicago audiences have proven time and again that they will applaud anybody on stage, no matter how bad the performance. . . . "
Wait, now have you've seen countless Lyric performances over the years? You better have to make such a statement. The rest of your rant is a strawman. Visit NYC, Boston and the general audience would probably clap for the same cast. Love the measures some people take to bash the Midwest. And where do you live that's full of sophistication?
Verdi wanted a soprano to give life to the role, not perfect pitch. I was at EVERY performance, and most rehearsals, and must say that Ms. Michael sounded pretty darn good. She was not feeling well on Oct. 24. This production was fantastic! Kudos to the kids, too.
Well, dead boy on cart, I saw the opera last night - in fact, I fly in from St. Louis for all eight operas each year - and thought it was fantastic. The staging and production were wonderfully... timeless. And the kids in the opera did a great job. The procession of kings was delightfully eerie. Well done!
@venetianformula total disagree i am one of the extra kids and i think that this production is wonderful. and if you where sleepwalking, would you scream to?
if you don't like it, don't talk trash about the opera. i am the dead boy on the cart in the opera
She performed this role at the Chicago Lyric Opera on October 24. She was flat the whole time, her vibrato out of control. It was a painful experience. I have never left a performance because of the quality of the singing, but I was very tempted to leave yesterday afternoon. I stayed until the end, hoping that she would salvage what remained of the performance. The sleep-walking scene was a nightmare. She was so off pitch and screamed her way through the aria. Extremely disappointing.
@venetianformula Totally agree with you. This Nadja Michael was horrendous. I saw the performance Oct. 15 and was flabbergasted to hear the audience give a roaring ovation to a singer whose vibrato made the pitches indiscernible. Is this why we go to opera now, to see attractive women slink around the stage? When I pay nearly $200 for opera, I expect to see a singer capable of singing the role, regardless of her dress size. Shame on Lyric for allowing this atrocity to take place on their stage.
RESTAGE THE FIGHTS PLEASE - THE MALE ASS IS NOT FLATTERING WHEN THRUST OUT INTO THE AUDIENCE AT THAT ANGLE!!! SHEESH!!!!

I heard the Saturday afternoon performance, and Hampson was in terrible voice, straining and off key. His voice does not fit Macbeth. At. All.

Lady and MacBeth were stupendous in this production

@LeNozze44 Agree wholeheartedly. If a singer is attractive and media-friendly (like Garanca) all the better, but marketing seems to have taken over.
