my grandfather died of black lung at 50, just visited coal mines in mahanoy city to remember the good times visiting their when i was younger, can you imagine over 100 bars in a town a half a mile wide and a miles and a half long. in ct. now i try to educate my kids as to hgw it use to be, and the hard work that people did to get here.
My ancestors came here from Wales in 1850 & we're still burning & picking coal.it's about $ 160.00 for a ton of rice if you go to the breaker & get it yourself.Chestnut & stove might cost a little more...picked coal is free if you don't mind cracking it.just don't get caught on coal company property!
My dad was a coal miner in NEPA for 37 years. He retired in 1972 & passed away in 2007 at the age of 88 from Black Lung disease. As a young child (daughter) it was difficult to listen to his stories, but I miss them & him and I look at these videos to re-connect. Thank you for your wonderful effort in showing the 3 eras of mining. My father received one one of the greatest compliments at this wake when a gentleman commented that my father was "the last of the iron men", and he was! TY
I wonder if there are still remains of people who could stuck in a collapse and died there. I love knowing I live in the Anthracite Coal Capital on Earth :D
That is very informative how much does a tonne of Anthracite Coal sell for these days? Do countries like China sell it for cheaper (like they do everything else!)
