This aircraft in 2003 was owned by Chuck Nearhoff of Osceola Mills, PA. He owned a company called Affordable Turbine Power Co., Inc. They were in the business of taking Solar T-62 turbine (JET) engines and installing a fuel controler and also manufactored the gear reduction trans. Where the company is today is anyones guess. I am actually on here myself looking for them to see if they are still in business. I know their website which is printed on their business card no longer works.
Not all Gas Turbines are Jets. In order for a Gas Turbine to properly be considered as occupying a Turbojet configuration, it must produce thrust directly from the engine's exhaust gases as a prerequisite. Would you call a marine gas turbine providing shaft power to ship's propeller a "jet"? Of course not!
A "jet engine" can be turbo-fan (commercial)jets) or turbo-prop (the plane you just saw). So, yes indeed, this aircraft is jet powered or more specifically turboprop powered
There are quite a few that still call them jets. The basic engine works in exactly the same way i.e. it produces a jet of air out of the back of the engine. In the case of the turboprop there is a power turbine inserted into that jet of air to harness power for the propellor.
Depends on what you're talking about. As far as engine function, yes because there is a gas turbine in there that runs the propeller through either a reduction gear box or free flow turbine. As far as certification goes, no. All you need to leagly fly a turboprop is a private pilot's license, and if over 200hp a high performance endorsement, where "jets" require a type rating. Remember I said leagly; you'd never get insurrance.
beautiful aircraft, I can't believe its a turboprop engine cuz the intake looks very small but I guess that's all it needs for that centrifugal impeller. Love the the video
What is the Vne on this aircraft? Does this turbine push that limit? Is the extra expense worth the return on the investment?

Holy Santa Maria piss that has to be the most awesome thing in existence.

I want to see more videos of this aircraft. No exceptions.

that is hilarious.

wonder why he just didn't build a turbine legend

Is the exhaust coming from the pipe that is between the undercarriage?
If so, is the underbelly of the plane reinforced for the heat that is created from that?

that is a ground loop waiting to happen lol, hope they are very good at staying coordinated!

kinda defeats the cost savings of a homebuilt,I guess its says I got the cash so look at what I can do,still a nice bird!

The thing about turboprops is a lot of times the engine cost more than the rest of the aircraft itself. LOLOL

they're considered jet aircraft only when you're telling women you have one.
miketacoma5 3 years ago
are turboprop aircraft classified as jet aircraft?
samanli1 4 years ago
I don't think so.
FlyinFreek 4 years ago
I don't think so either.
The main thrust is produced by the propeller.
Thrust from the jet-engine is negligible, as a matter of fact some turboprops have the intake in the rear...

No.. its a prop plane, there's no jet engine.
agentfazexx 3 years ago
@agentfazexx It is a jet engine, just with a propeller attached, instead of a fan. =D
bronco8585 1 year ago
@bronco8585 that's not entirely true
64wing 2 weeks ago
No, because it has a propeller. A jet aircraft is one that has a turbojet or turbofan engine. This is a turboprop.

The RV-4 is an E-LSA, in the USA, right?
what engine is in it?
A LSA licensed pilot can't legaly fly it, right?
24rozy69 4 years ago
No the RV4 is not ELSA legal as it is to heavy and much to fast.
