Don't you think "Magical Mystery Tour" is underrated? It has beautiful songs like "I Am The Walrus", "The Fool On The Hill", "Penny Lane". Better dan Sgt. Pepper for me...
That's one of my favorite Beatles albums, it's like a sgt. Pepper vol. 2. I've got both the stereo and mono version from 2009 and it's the "only" american version of any Beatles album you get in the remasters (Capitol Reords, Hollywood CA). Fake stereo? That's right, I've heard about it all. The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds was in fact in that same idiotic treatment back in 66'. Thank God we have this new technology that can save things for us!
Hey John, can you check on this? I first got MMT in the late 70's (I was in Kindergarten wow) and it was on the orange capitol label. The album, like Sgt Peppers had no gaps, only a split second after the die away on the fade, and Flying had a longer fade on the stereo. When I got the first CDs and I got MMT, that's when I saw there were now 3 second gaps, and on the new mono and stereo remasters as well. Was that something Capitol did on the repressings with it being gapless?
Great, great video! I Am the Walrus (one of my personal favorites) is technically half in phony stereo too. After the "sitting in an English garden..." vocal part, Lennon's vocal from that point on are a mono mix split up into two channels. It's on the master tape, but you can tell the sound difference if you skip the middle eight.
Love the reviews, and frankly, if you keep reviewing the albums over and over, it wouldn't get old. cheers!
This was really cool. It went beyond a review, it was actually really entertaining. And the stuff about the movie at the beginning really made it a lot more interesting. Thanks Beat-ards!
Hey John love your videos. I am 23 and I have loved The Beatles since I was about 7. The first Beatles cd I listened to was the double album 1967-70 and was hooked, it even inspired me to play drums. I watched the Beatles anthology when it first aired in Britain in 1995. I own the Anthology dvd box, which I watch often. I own all their movies. I had all their cds from 87 onwards. I got both the Stereo and Mono Box set in Sept aswell as Rockband. So can I be a Beat-ard now? P.S Macca's The MAN!
Hey John, I've greatly enjoyed your Beatles reviews, thanks for all the effort!
I have a request though. Let It Be has always fascinated me, both from its songs and the varied releases over the years (Vinyl/87 CD, Naked, 09 Remaster). If you have the time/inkling would you consider doing a review of Let It Be? Thanks!
@arjnewton Yes- that's a first pressing for the Stereo Box misprint.. nothing you'll be able to retire from but I believe they fixed that on the more recent pressings..
@MrBandontheRun Okay, I bought a stereo MMT cd when they first came out, stated Let It Be Doc. I bought the boxset, but never opened the individual cd's. Bought another MMT stereo, same thing, Let It Be Doc. So, tonight, 10-10-10, I broke down, opened my Stereo Boxset MMT, and BINGO!!!!! Magical Mystery Tour Documentary. I believe John's Has that as well. Maybe it was a partial mistake on first pressings. I don't know. Just happy to have one that is correct. OCD, I guess.
Please forgive this extremely noobish question but around the 2:45 mark you mention that they had put out around 5 singles, but they had no album to put them on. Was process normal in the 60's? Because it seems pretty odd to me that they would put out that many singles in a short amount and not have an album ready for those singles.
@Dylancougar the beatles refused to put singles on albums in the UK because they felt it was "conning the public" to make them buy songs that they already owned. capitol in the US wasn't so magnanimous, though. ;-)
Love your reviews John. Great fun...well put together. Something you didn't touch on...is that the stereo mix on the original vinyl USA MMT of 'Strawberry Fields Forever" is different to all subsequent stereo mixes released on CD. The Lennon vocal was given more reverb, and the panning of instruments was very different. At one point, the cello fly's from the left to right channel! Drums are a little quieter. I prefer this mix. Keep up the good work!

I wanted to ask, have you already tried the Limited Edition USB Stereo Box ?
Those are 24bit FLACS, but I'll tell you something, it's really BETTER THAN THE STEREO CD'S. I was really skeptical about hearing a difference, but it really hit me, when I actually played it.
If you got the studio equipment, I think that you surely can handle 24bits.
It's got really better drums, and you can hear every detail !!!
The Mono beatles box has been shined on as a waste of 200 bucks due to the not much gatefolds and 0 booklets (except for Magical mystery tour) but am here to ask ur opinion is it wroth it beacause am getting sum cash next week and am thinking of buying that box (I already have the stereo) is the packaging and sound really preswade you to buy it? Let me Know
I thought the movie was great! It's hilarious, and just what I'd expect from The Beatles. I was surprised when I heard that no one else seemed to like it...
I remember seeing movies like this and Help! at the $1 "get the kids out of the house" weekend summer series at the local theater that was going down the toilet when the mega-mall theaters caught on - crappy (campy, cult-film) stuff like this and the T. Rex movie Born to Boogie and kiddie-oriented stuff like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians with Pia Zadora. haha - those movies were old then already too, not just bad.
Thanks John. I agree the stereo is good with headphones (as they did pay attention this time to stereo as well as mono), but I prefer the mono mix of Your Mother Should Know with the phasing on the drums and backing vocals.
I love MMT! :D Whats the best format for putting the album in itunes? I notice that the itunes format sounds less clear than the mp3 ones (i burned the cd onto both itunes and the computer itself), and when i put it on AIFF it takes up a whole lotta space. Any suggestions?
Great video John, would love to see a review on please please me, check out my videos i made, btw im the one who e-mailed you a while ago regarding the mono box :)
Every time i see a new video im there! better go and vote for you to play now..! :)

Are you sure it was the Beatles that objected to putting the singles tunes on the albums? I thought it was EMI.
And I spose whoever it was didn't care by the time Yellow Submarine came out with two recycled tunes, right?

John, please review Sgt. Pepper, both mono and stereo remasters. It is my favourite Beatles album and love to hear your review on this classic album.
