  • i typed bus driver on my explorer history record, there is 211 results, 210 goes to this video.

    with love, from hong kong

  • @yauyyb Awww, this made my day! It's definitely a catchy song, but with a bittersweet quality.

  • I know this sounds dumb but for the longest time I thought it was Murray talking as the bus driver and then today I just realized it was Bret haha

  • i want to be someone's Paula

  • @mcnultysfan It is so sad for that someone to have their Paula. :/

  • Just saw Bret sing this song in London..so sweet.

  • funny shit

  • best video for this song.

    great job.

  • That´s something that surprised me when I first took an intercity bus... the driver would speak exactly like this one :) Love Aotearoa!

  • You mean funnies New'zies on Youtube?

  • Kiwi, you call them Kiwis

  • they're from New Zealand

  • ye new zealanders

throw another shrimp on the barbie and ride around on kangaroo`s all day

  • Comment removed

  • that's australia. kiwi's have sheep. lots and lots of sheep. (but i get your joke.)

  • It is the perfect thing to go with this song- so funny and heart rending at the same time!

  • If they do use this song in a next season they may have, they could just use your video-it's perfect. 5 Stars!

  • It's not a video though it's a slideshow.

  • i cant wait till they come to London im SOOOO buying tickets to see them!!

    arghhh x]

  • That was great!

  • this is one of the secrets gems of the conchord i love this song i hope they play this in a 3rd season

thnks a lot the video was great going directly to my favs

  • well they finished season 2 back in new zealand. :D

  • Also Excellent Job Conchord Fan syncing the pics with the tune kinda shows us what new zealand is really like thanks

  • This is like my fav Conchords song the Harmonies are awesome I was disapointed they only refrenced this in New Zealand Town and didnt get to do the song, But Classic Episode anyway, LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

  • haha i just moved from new york, for some reason this song makes me homesick. haha great song either way.

  • In terms of volume.

  • There was actually some subtext about this song in one of the episodes with the prime minister in it.

His assistant was named Paula and she lived in apartment 39 back home and there was obviously an unrequited love about them

  • exactly this - shame the prime minister never sang this though.

  • maybe now that theyre back in new zealand at the end of season 2 , bret will get a job as a bus driver there in season 3

  • My favorite Concords song. I love the melody in the vocals. It's a great little touch to make this song better. I love the great lyrics too. So clever. Ha. If you've watched the show, and seen the episode with "New Zealand Town" I thought the entire episode was working up to singing this song, because it ended with a cheesy bus tour. But sadly, the most they did was play the tune during the end credits. Sadface. HAha.

  • I was really happy to hear them sing this song in Chicago last month, too. Thanks for doing a great job.

  • Well, the things he's showing everyone are kind of cheesy. A sock factory, the new bridge and the old bridge (that used to be called the new bridge), the whole Paula digression. I think it's meant to be funny to anyone who's been on a crappy bus tour.

  • Honestly this was one of my favorites at first. I didn't find many lyrics funny. After 2 or 3 more listens, I loved it. The lines are so well delivered. Even now as I've listened to this several times I'm laughing as I type it.

Plus it's one of my favorite songs for their vocals.

  • It's not impossible to get

  • I don't like this for it's humour, tho it is funny, it's actually quite a deep song and touches something inside us, everyone has one person in their life they're sure would have been their perfect partner, sum ppl may get lucky, others not, in 30 years I could be Tony... that sucks

  • the local school looks like a voodoo house

  • haha love the video

  • Awesome video. Just saw them perform the song in Chicago and my heart was warmed. Such a charming song.

  • Glad to hear this is still being performed live. I think I heard it first around 2000 in Wellington, but I don't remember it being as regularly played as, say, "Bowie" at gigs.

I guess with it being referenced in the "New Zealand Town" episode of season 2, it might make a comeback!

  • all of their tune are brilliantly funny, this one perhaps is my favorite... many comedic lines well delivered!

  • I think this is one of their best songs. Funny and heart-warming!

And the clips you provided were excellent! You brilliantly matched the charm of the Conchords, great job!

  • Woho, representing Norway!

  • What a brilliant video, it is so perfectly in tune with the sentiments of the song. I'm sure the Conchords would dig it! Both just nail that special Kiwi thing, makes me want to hop on a plane and get back over there.

  • this is really damn good!

    thank you so much

  • Thanks so much for the video! It's very well-done, captures the charm and hilarity of this song, which is one of my favs.

(am i a geek for listening to this song a million times to try to improve my kiwi accent?)

  • Thanks, tijean! And yes, you are a geek for trying to improve your kiwi accent.... but here's a few tips: Work on your "Dark L" - try saying "muwlk" instead of "milk" and "town huwl" instead of "town hall".

Clip your vowels so that "i"s become "u"s, like "fush and chups" and "pucnuc" instead of "picnic" (and as opposed to the Aussie "Peekneek")

Finally, end every sentence with a rising inflection as if everything you say is a question. Voila! Now you speak like a Kiwi!

  • ... *facepalm* are you actually from New Zealand?

  • will moy kwischin to you is ded you know that Ryhs Darby wants to hunt for the yitti in Nipporl?....

  • ive been there. awesom song too.

  • this song is epic.

  • I could listen to this song forever.

  • very well done slide show. I share this will all of my friends. I hope they do this in the new season.

  • beginning is my favorite.

  • TAIHAPE TOWN HALL!!!! AWESOME!!! lol, I love fotc, make me proud to be a kiwi!!

  • thanks for the video. it is great to have a visual commentary as it is hard to understand the new zealand references being british.

  • dude who's the guy who looks like eric forman from that 70's show

  • Absolutely cracking song. I think this is one of my favourites by the FotC boys. Nice vid too!

  • i think its one of their best songs

  • Really nice vid, Thanks

  • Thanks so much for making this video. It was very well done. It's nice to have a visual for the song, especially for us non-Kiwis.I hadn't heard the song yet either. So thanks for posting that too. I just heard about this show and am catching up on all the years of performances I've missed. I love these guys!

  • The Second Picture of Paula Thompson was on the right hand side of the road.

  • In England it Makes Sense

  • New Zealand

  • Whatevs

  • That was a really well done photo montage for this song, nicely done!

  • First song i ever heard from FOTC.. back in 2002 or 03... still love it!

Thanks for making a great clip to go with it :D

  • nice video

  • This could be one of the songs in the new season.

  • It could well be! The song itself is one of FoTC's oldest - I remember hearing it at Indigo bar well before 2001. In the TV series, Murray mentioned that he'd always wanted to be a bus driver, and I thought they might launch into a Murray-led dream sequence with this song then.

I just hope they don't re-write the song as a small-town USA tribute, but keep the Kiwiana vibe alive.

  • haha cool video!!

  • Very, very clever video to an awesome FOTC song.

Kudos, job well done conchordfan !!!

  • awsum vid mate. done really well

  • that was really good, love the song and video

  • What a great song; simultaneously nostalgic and melancholy and hilarious. I love the Conchords, but this song has something that most of their songs don't... the humour is more subtle, and it's oddly affecting.

Jemaine used to be my favorite, but Bret is awesome in this track.

  • mmm, I like the way you express your thoughts. You should write comparative analysis of the Conchords' musical style and influences--who knows, you could even get it published in some niche magazine!

  • I hear "Digi-pop folk parody Monthly" is looking for new writers...

  • Just the niche I was referring to! ;)

  • When they played this in Ann Arbor May 10 it was like they were playing it for me...I love this song and listen to it right here every day.

  • Vikings are in Dannevirke, in Norsewood it's trolls! Terrific video. I love it!

  • Well done!!!! Never heard this song 'til now. The video helped follow that thick English ....errrr... New ZEALAND accent. (They do have Vikings there, right?)

  • Vikings? Only in Dannevirke ...or possibly Norsewood :)

  • it was a joke conchordfan cos on the programme when he meets this girl holding a sign she says i like your english accent then bret says new zealand and she says oh they have vikings there right?

  • Ah, right, got it. But yeah, the 'vikings' all settled in Dannevirke. (Google search "Dannevirke viking") Even the local line dancing club is called the Dannevirke Vikings!

  • lol

  • I have to say that was pretty damn cool!!! :chug: Later...

  • great video

  • are these all shots of the actual places he singin bout in nz??? or just random pics just to go a long with the song????? cuz if its all accurate then kudos my man, fucking awesome........

  • Hey John, well the song invokes lots of rural/small town NZ imagery, but makes very few specific references (such as the name of the town). These images are nearly all from NZ, and mostly from the central North Island - the sort of area that Bret and Jemaine grew up in. There is(was?) a sock factory in Levin, which provides most of the street pics. As far as I know, there is no actual Waimohanga river. And the statue of the 'Bronzer bluey' dog parodies the Lake Tekapo collie dog statue pictured.

  • Awesome man, thanks, appreciate the feedback.......

  • Cool video. Where did you find a bronze statue of a sheep dog???

  • Hey there - the statue is at Lake Tekapo in the South Island. Google Image search for 'lake tekapo sheep dog' or 'lake tekapo statue'. It stands near the picturesque Church of the Good Shepherd.

  • Aw Mckenzies dog! We used to stop there on the way to Queenstown. He is legendary- the guy used to steal peoples sheep, and he'd distract the farmer and he dog would muster heards of thousands of sheep all by his self. The guy was a thief (came from Oz, go figre) but the dog is considered monument to the loyalty of man's best friend.

  • That was excellent Holden, can you make some more for other Folk The World tracks?

  • this is my favorite fotc song. were did you find it i would like to know.

  • Thanks! It's one of my favourites too!

You can find this song on FOTC's live album "Folk the World Tour", which was released well before the BBC radio series or their TV show.

You can purchase it from smokecds(dot)com - it's well worth it!

  • im pretending im an american watching new zealand videos , easy to see why they think we're a bit stone age. New Zealand rules thought :D

  • Who is Paula Thompson???? I'm lost!!!

  • You know, born in '54, to the family next door, to a family of four.

The girl he liked and wished he married, but didn't. Gutted :-(

  • good work

  • I'm impressed, Holden. Are you from New Zealand? Those photos in the clip look so authentic. I've never been there myself, although it is a dream of mine to visit one day. Thanks for the awesome video--its on my favorites list :)

  • Thanks for all the positive comments, guys! This is the first 'video' I've ever made.

And yes, I'm from NZ and tried to use pictures from NZ wherever possible (Even the 'little place in Norway is from Norway!) Most of the shots of the town are of Levin in the North Island. And all of the 'take me back' photos are from a Kiwi's Flickr page. The Governor-General photos are real NZ GG's and the pound notes are NZ pounds from that era. However the Paula shots are from England, I think.

  • Really well done! I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I think FOTC would be proud.

    Good Onya! :o)

  • There was some real talent behind this video. Good job. Love the song.

  • thank you for a glorious journey thru this song, good onya

  • Nice job.

  • this song has so much flow

  • flight of the conchords are amazing what a cool song, it soo great

  • love it.

I sooooo hope 'Paula' sees this.

    5/5
