  • wait a minute I thought Bonhom was the first to play the drums with his hands, lol

  • @muszyngr Bonham stole a LOT of shit.

  • Brilliant, with a capitol "B"!

  • I think he's my favourite from the old school. Him, baby dodds and zutty singleton!

  • THIS DUDE'S PLAYING WITH HIS HANDS!!! X^D FUCKING AWESOME!!!

  • i prefer travis barker

  • @4against1

that's like saying you'd take a hayabusa bro-tercycle over a solid built victory. it might look cool and go fast, but it completely lacks character.

  • @4against1 Fuck you! Travis Barfer is not even remotley close to being as good as this guy! (I'm just playin' around, you can like whoever you want)

  • @4against1 Travis Barker would tell you himself that Mr. Morello and many other jazz drummers own him in all aspects of drumming. Sure he's powerful but that is about it for him. He's a novice compared to these wizards of the kit!!

  • Why is he dead? :(

  • outstanding solo.

  • HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY MAESTRO BRUBECK!

  • Joe Morello singt met de slagwerk!

  • he fucked ALLLLL those girls

  • he makes metal drummers look like babies, and he's playing jazz hah

  • Anyone else notic he's playing in 5/4?

  • @grantf86 Yes man, it's the solo of take five...

  • @pipaspaz Not sure, I think its from the big solo in 'Far more Drums' on the album after 'Take Five' called 'Time Further Out'.. amazing stuff.

  • can somebody explain to me how that hi-hat works???

  • @insaneinthebrain1978 Yeah! It goes up & down.

  • damn i wish there were still drummers with as much class as joe these days

  • THIS IS PURE BREAKCORE

  • まさしく太鼓

  • 1:32 is deffinately the strongest point

  • jazz has the best drummers, exhibit A. Look up.

  • Awesome!

  • Joe Morello is so good that he briefly broke the internet at 1:32 Thumbs up if you agree.

  • @antisoc1al Thumbs down for begging, idiot

  • @MisterOjeteMoreno I'll try to use smaller words since you can't seem to understand, but saying if you agree, is not begging. You should start reading things called books, I suggest you start with Everybody Poops, sounds like it's just right for your comprehension level.

  • @antisoc1al umad lol

  • @antisoc1al broke the internet?

    fuck you kid

  • @HACKERMAN24

With great zingers like that, I can see why you call me the kid. I also took a look at your channel. You actually refer to yourself as H4ck3rM4n? Wow that's super serious stuff. I fear your alleged MSN hacking skills. Way to give your channel the whole Matrix look incase anyone doubted your hacking skills. Keep it up skip, we're all impressed. By the way, that's not "hacking" Kids like you who think that's hacking need to dive head first into an empty pool.

  • @antisoc1al you know, thats a good comment, and as such, you dont need to tell people to thumbs it up. if they gree, they'll thumbs it up anyway.

  • awesome

  • How DOES he keep the hi-hat going like that...?! Incredible skill...

  • superb drumming right there. joe morello is definitly my favorite jazz drummer

  • This embodies everything I feel about the art of drumming. If you cannot make incredible music out of 4 drums and a couple cymbals, you have no business adding a million drums to your kit (I am talking to you Neil Peart,Mike Portnoy, etc.)

  • I think Joe Morello was closer to Max Roach's approach to the kit, playing solos that were melodic and swinging at the same time. On the other hand,Morello was acclaimed by true good music lovers ,because of his affiliation with Brubeck. Let's be honest now. The Dave Brubeck Quartet would have never been as successful WITHOUT Joe Morello,as they were WITH him. Unofficially,it was really The Joe Morello Quartet as far as I was concerned!

  • best drummer ever.... Krupa was flashy... Rich was loud... as far as technique and sheer artistry goes, this guy was the master. He did more with less.. a true musician.. not just a drummer

  • @flutopia3477 Perfectly expressed, sir! My Dad was a Brubeck fan and when I wanted to become a drummer, my Dad played Brubeck for me to instruct me in the "real deal." I was always grateful to him for that.

  • 35 people are jealous of Joe Morello making that look easy. They tried it and failed epically. Rest in Peace Joe. You will be missed

  • soooooo clean

  • great stuff. tnx for posting.

morello was a legend. keith moon was a big fan of his too.

can anyone spot where the microphones were?

  • @sodium57 I cannot see any mikes.

  • Amazing!!!

  • I feel the same way that the blonde girl does, shown above the crash cymbal (at that time a ride), Look at how awe she is at his raw talent.!

  • :O 1:32 amazing

  • 1:50 look at his left hand :O

  • @music4826 I must agree with you, saw Bonham live 16 times, what he did live was inhuman...nobody played like that, and he alway got the biggest round of applause at every Zep show they ever did...I"m sure sam can play just like him don't you, hahaaa, what a dummy...your right, spends his life here and seen nothing, Zep was the biggest band of all time and they disbanded because Bonham was irreplaceable..and I've never heard anyone say they could play as good as J.B, when;s he touring? Shmuck..

  • @mppaiges

bonham is hot trash what has he done that 50 guys i can name cant do, in fact he took ideas from people like morello here and he his shit sounded worse, gadd took the 4 sticks idea from him and improved it, bonham stole the purdie shuffle for rain song , and he didnt improve it, bonham , was loud had a great foot, but his solos were WEAK, anyone who isnt a groupie for led zep or a legimate drummer can see that ,hell at least the wanna be metal drummers were fast when they solo.

  • @samtotheg

and to add another guy check out tony williams when he solos and uses a alotta foot triplets way better than wack ass bonham !!!

  • Wow, half of the people on here who run their mouths about Bonham and other drummers being overrated garbage, if you made it half as far as any of them then maybe you might have a say. Otherwise you are just another ignorant running mouth on youtube that means absolutely nothing outside of this site. Maybe if you replaced all that bitching with some practice you might be a hair on one of their asses someday.

  • @music4826

music we all do it , we all have confirmation bias, bonham was ina successful rock band he musta been good rite, u wanna look at that and justify or backwards rationalize it as him being great or god, hes average dude, you want me to replicate some of his work for you , what do you wanna hear on my crappy drumset rock n roll blackdog , moby dick, achilles , tell me , his shit is not hard its very MEDIOCRE, being ina good band doesnt mean yer good per se,

  • @music4826

    LMFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAO

    omg...

    i agree with you.

i just had to quote this

"Maybe if you replaced all that bitching with some practice you might be a hair on one of their asses someday."

    dying sir. dying..

    thank u

    ahahahhahahahahah

  • Seen Peart many times, same fucking solo every time, snooooze, great lyricist, good writer, so-so drummer, same now as 79,???. Anyone can learn that solo. Buddy Rich Memorial, watch Peart embarrass himself, he admitted it in the rag, can't swing, mediocre chops, Smitty Smith and Steve Smith obliterated him..in M.D, all he talked about (in 84) was Tommy Aldridge, mentioned him over 20 times as a much better drummer...he's a nice man, sad about his family, good band...watch a T.A. video, unreal

  • Damm son, John Bonham was 12 when Joe did this, and I know Bonham loved jazz and he could swing...if metal existed in 61, then Morello would have been crazier, but his drums (both with hands and sticks) are the closest I've ever heard to Bonhams.Really scary, and like John he plays from his wrists, no beat downs...any drummer with a trace a musician in him would find this solo lightyears ahead of it's time..Oh,unpopular opinion, 2most overated drummers of all time, Palmer and N.Peart..cont.

  • @mppaiges

dude bonham is ovverated garbage, his beats are basic I can play all of them and probaly the fills note for note , with ease, peart plays odd times and polyrhythms well and has chops, he cant swing he plays the ride funny and when hits the snare it sounds like rockabilly or bossa nova he doesnt have or use that left hand for jazz and carl palmer is a beast too, honestly bonham is average same level as travis barker.

  • or nod like jazz or make u you cover yer mouth and rewind it back like morellos solos it doesnt it doesnt make my girlfriend a non funk fan go damn play that steve gadd 50 ways to leave your lover thing again, or make female go damn thatsound sexy like the intro to take 5 with just the drums, its is simply banging on shit and making fast noise and playin exercises patterns, no wonder you metal kids are all mad and worked up all the time and depressed , I would be too listening to that garbage.

  • you like fast noise not the blend of musicality and technique ,hell if you program a single stroke roll on fl studio or double bass 16ths notes and put it at 800 bpm it sounds like garbage , speed isnt everything id rather listen to gene krupa than tomas haake or joey jordison any day, metal on a whole just doesnt have the musicality as jazz funk etc, i dont mean in how technical or fast something is either, it doesnt make ya wanna dance like latin music or nod yer head like hip hop or funk

  • with the exception of peart who cant swing and all those guys are boring back fround noise, theres nothing interesting about them, i show people who dont listen to jazz or people who dont care for drums and they are like wow with morello ,look at where hes playin at the playboy mansion with girls im sure who werent into the jazz, i got punk friends who love this solo, i got hip hop friends who love this shit, who dont give a damn about jazz, none of the guys you posted have that same effect

  • neil peart is dope at solos but cant swing for shit check out the buddy rich memorial

tomas haake is cool with his grooves but his solos are lackin and i dont think he has the speed

and hand technique of one joe morello

slipnot drummer is double bass and singles and doubles and loud and fast he lacks creativty as well

musicality sorry he doesnt cut it either

gene hoglan is another washing machine double bass sounding guy who plays loud with no musicality

  • george is wack man, double bass sounds like a damn dryin machine it has no musicality to it

and his licks sound stupid the bass and his mimickin each other he is the kicking of robotical pattern

playing i cant imagine him soloing with a blend of technique and groove/musicalty

next guy daney carey he is ovverated he plays the same wierd ass non funkyor groovy slow nonsenical polyrhytmic

beats that are tecchnical but mad boring and he doesnt solo no where near better id say

  • a true musical voice breathing the ebb and flow of the phrases...

  • this guy was born 50 earlier then he should...

  • Quick Tenor Sax Solo at 1.31 :)

  • the birds want to bang joey!

  • I love the way Joe often kept a straight 2 and 4 on the hats whatever time sig he was playin. Really smooths things out

  • @170adamb Your comment made me pay attention! I recognize that he plays 5/4! Amazing. Count the bass drum as one and continue for yourselves.

  • I think people should refrain from comparing Joe and Buddy Rich; they play two different styles of music. Also, Joe needs more credit for his technical proficiency. It seems like many people misinterpret his feel as being all groove and no technicality, when in fact he has both feel and technical proficiency. This is why he's a master.

  • @DavidAlanRogers that was a great way to put it and entirely true

  • kill the 35 people who unliked the video

  • from hand - percussion, to sticks, awesome.

  • woah....that lick just after 1:31 is so fucking fast it sounded like an electronic buzz!!!

  • he's a drum god for 60s but today we have better drummers, mike portnoy, george kollias, or danny carey, or thomas haake, or gene hoglan, or even the motherfucker drummer from slipknot :D

  • @TheTwilightIsMyRobe

    ohhhhh no.

horrible horrible statement you just came out with there.

  • @LloydyFckinB this is like the evolotion theory, drummers got better, everything gets better technically, ask to joe moello (he's one of my icons) he will say just like me...

  • @TheTwilightIsMyRobe joe morello is technically better than most of todays drummers and any of todays drummers will tell you that

  • @jefster1961 people like you must get out of youtube, i'm saying "theese drummers are better in technic" and you say "shut the fuck up go to your mom", chill out man... ok moella is much better than todays drumers but not all of them, some of todays drummers can play 3 songs at the same time, if you don't know that don't say childish things like "fuck you" or " go to your mum"...

note: i can't speek english well because i'm not english or american

  • @TheTwilightIsMyRobe Who are these drummers you think are better then?

  • @justanambulance watch?v=XagspfIdhqk this guy is waaay tooo faster and technical but i don't think he can play jazz perfect,

watch?v=Ap7Z5S6yTZM this guy is a twin pedal maniac, he can play 2 3 songs same time

watch?v=GHkucr1jJpQ&feature=related this guy is neil peart :D

is this enough, but i dont think there is a better drummer from 60s then moello...

  • @TheTwilightIsMyRobe George Kollias? Please tell me you're joking. You may as well go and say Joey Jordison... Thomas Haake is a similar style, just speed, blasting away with double bass pedals. There's not a great deal of technicality there, mostly speed. These guys look up to Joe Morello. Neil peart is amazing, but making a comparison across such different genres becomes pointless, as you should have understood. Do you play an instrument?

  • @justanambulance yeah, playing fast is a good thing, which old drummers don't have, i mean, neil peart or joe moello can't play that fast, but it doesn't mean they suck, and playing fast doen't mean it's technical, but really, kollias is fucking technical, and for haake, i think he must have 4 brains :S but it's sure, they can't play like moello or moello can't play like him, ok? there are more technical drummers that don't use speed, gavin harrison, danny carey... by the way i play guitar

  • @justanambulance haake doen't blast away with double bass pedal :D and i hate that joey jordison guy but he is extremely fast... and there is buddy rich, elvin jones etc... (I wrote that because of fucking 450 character rule)

  • @TheTwilightIsMyRobe those guys are shit compared to joe morello and i happen to be a maggot so shut the fuck up about shit you dont know about and go have your mommy wipe your nose for you

  • @TheTwilightIsMyRobe yeah... they're good at speed... actual music (even when I'm not old to do that statement) lacks of feeling....

  • @albertw666 they are not only good at speed, tomas haake can play 3 songs at the same time :S yeah some bands lack feeling, for example dream theater, but most of them has soul, like porcupine tree, opeth, agalloch, anathema, even death... but i hate the metalcore bands, they play fast, and then singing like gays to be emotional, like bullet for my valentine...

    sorry for bad english...

  • @TheTwilightIsMyRobe yeah, I'm agree with your comment, the drummer from slipknot have something I still can't stand lol XD and maybe my english is bad too xD

  • magic

  • What a badass motherfucker. Rest in Peace, Joe.

  • Who is travis barker? lol

  • If he trained his penis in on the snare, that would free his hands up for a lot more, hi hat, tom, and cymbal combinations..

  • Ah, so that's where Bonham got it.

  • @Martiluk1 Nah, Bonham probably got it from Max Roach, look up "The Drum also Waltzes"

  • @Martiluk1

Bonham got it from lots of places. This is one of them, yeah.

  • JOE is UNBELIEVABLE you got to love that man; what a drummer!!!

  • Joe Morello, and guys like him, were so incredible and ground breaking that 50 years later their sound is unmatched. As diluted as the music business is, that itself is a remarkable effort. He is definately one of the greats.

  • @seminole628 Hi buddy, Thanks for your contribution. I didn't know he'd gone. Fine words for a breathtaking musician. Thanks.

    Tony W. UK

  • 1:32, wicked snare rush.

  • Comment removed

  • You kidding ? Morello is one of the most underated druller of this period... he deserves to be as famous as max roach roy haynes etc... but nobody cares coz he did "commercial things" like take five with white west coast jazz band. Seriously his fuckin awesome, just the way he beats the ride when he is on groovin makes me cry !

  • ive never seen a drummer with such speed in his left hand.incredible

  • I've seen MANY jackass comments on YT over the years, but for someone to say that Master Jazz Drummer Joe Morello was "supremely overrated" has to be the most absurd comment I've seen yet.

There are no words to describe the insanity of that statement ~

  • @MarkR1957 i completely agree

  • @MarkR1957 its funny......some ppl feel the need to say things like that coz they think it demonstrates their 'superior' knowledge.......the most hilarious part being when they dont realise how much of a dick they look in front of everyone........personally i found this to be the most listenable, interesting, groovy drum solo iv come across in a long while....with a technique to die for!!...really nice man...thanks for the post.

  • @MarkR1957 just trolls tryin to get a rise!

  • @MarkR1957 I'm a drummer and it took me many years to realize just how good was Joe Morello. Today the depth and breadth of his talent simply amazes me.

  • @MarkR1957 ..there's an idiot born every second...unfortunately they can operate computers somehow...

  • @MarkR1957 Absolute, total BS comes to mind to describe such a moronic statement. Morello was one of the best of the best. No contest.

  • Disagree with you - Joe Morello is in own class, there is nothing to compare - both of them are superb masters, the top of the moutnain. All the difference is only in their heads )))

  • why the picture is on fast forward?

  • THIS IS REAL DRUMMING!!!!

  • brilliant upload..cheers for this

  • Can't he afford drumsticks??????

  • now i no where john bonham take a part of is influence

  • Thanks. I have lots of albums/cd's -- saw quartet in person many times -- never saw him do a Take 5 solo with hands. He DOES do a lot of hand work on amazing solo on Castillian Drums (Carnegie Hall concert), which I did have the opportunity to see him do in person... nearly 50 years ago!

  • it's a 5/4 so he play just 2 and 4 at the hat but you must think like that: 1 2 1 2 3 so you play all "2" with the hat

  • why doesn't his left foot move with the hi hat ?

  • The blonde in the front definitely wants to fuck him!

  • Anyone know what the song is?

  • @cabotwonder it's Take five dude

  • @cabotwonder I'm pretty sure this is Take 5

  • @Pr0fess0rSasquatch it is take 5

  • @cabotwonder I could be wrong, but it sounds a lot like the beat to Take 5

  • just fanstatich

  • hmmmm many say speed is not equal to technical ability but why do all these jazz drummers seem to have BOTH of those worlds in their hands? insane speeds (buddy rich, gene krupa, JOE MORELLO, etc. all excel at druming fast in some way, be it with the one hand roll (like buddy) or quick displays of speed (gene or joe) and technical complexity such as playing wih your hands, performing awsome sounding solos on 5/4 and ofcourse wearing glasses while doing so.

  • @1:33?

  • wow 0:33 does he do moeller with his finger?

  • Look at the ladies in the background from1:20 just in awe

Its good to be a drummer

  • Vic Reeves on drums

  • why do people keep comparing travis barker to these jazz drummers. different taste levels and style completely....in dynamic, drumming style and restraint.

    stop. please.

  • why do people keep comparing travis barker to these jazz drummers. different taste levels and style completely....in dynamic, drumming style and restraint.

    stop. please.

  • Morello = The name you need to have to be a good musician

  • Travis who?

  • He's no Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa, but he's still good.

  • @ilovezildjian I think Joe Morello is one of the most underrated drummers of all time; and in my opinion, is up there with Buddy and Gene

  • @ethankripke My appreciation for Joe's work has soared the past few years as I've spent more time listening, watching. I rate him #2 right behind Gene and ahead of Buddy. RIP, Joe - Thanks so much for your wonderful legacy of great drumming.

  • I can't say I'm familiar with Joe Morello's career; jazz was always something that real musicians played as opposed to my rock pig pedigree. When you think that Joe had amassed so much technique (not to mention his barehanded originality) with gear that really was crap you have to conclude that real genius doesn't rely on 'gear' but rather on dedication, passion and the relentless pursuit of your individual voice. It's wonderful to think we have such an awesome archive of voices.

  • you can't compare Joe Morello with Travis Barker. They are two completely different styles of music, so stop trying to compare Jazz with Punk!!!!

  • without sticks!! rip Joe Morello

  • Nothing like a good ol' taste of Joe to make you feel inadequate :)

    Rest in Peace man

  • Must have been quite time to live in, where your picked up your gal in your art deco car, smoked a joint and proceded to see the dave brubeck quartet.

  • This is a great example of how to build a solo on a theme, give the audience a skeleton framework preview, then slowly build the complexity and energy, and leave no listener behind.

  • @mlcoo17 that was a perfect description

  • the audio recorder had a intense orgasm at 1:32-1:33, lousy machinery lol.

  • blah blah stop bitching - everyone complaining about travis - who cares- shut the fuck up and watch the damn thing

  • Sorry about the question, but...who the fuck is this Travis Barker guy?

  • @egyptianminor He's an over rated drummer from a shitty pop punk band who can't play solo without a backing track or gimmick like his kit spinning around on stage.

  • The timing of this fucks with my mind.

  • Joe has lots of solos where he keeps giving you the beat with the hi hat. I love it when he does it, it keeps me from losing track.

  • 2:10 I hate it when that happens XD

  • @marcusfedgus i feel your pain that has happened to me too many times

  • @marcusfedgus @ shows weve used bricks and even drilled in screws to the stage once!

  • @marcusfedgus Good call, brings back some good memories, bet that comment makes nearly every drummer smile, it's probably the only thing i have in common with the great Joe Morello, unfortunately !

  • insane look at his left foot on auto pilot and he can just do whatever he wants with his other appendages, absolutely amazing, love the start without sticks too... alright lets put the travis barker comments to rest, the one good drummer that actually listened to blink noticed he was actually pretty good and now all these other people that don't know what they're talking about are suddenly, YEAH HE IS GOOD WAIT NO HE'S THE BEST, TRAVIS BARKER IS THE THE THE BEST DRUMMER, hes good but come on...

  • Wait, I just realised... is he soloing in 5/4?

This man's gotta be one of the best jazz drummers I've ever seen, along with Christian Vander.

  • 1:21 That lady in the background totally wants Joe's wang. :D

  • @VastlyOutnumbered and Joe wouldn't mind paradiddling her...

  • anyone that brought up travis barker after they watched this video should step away from the screen and go fucking drown yourself for having a pathetic taste in music.. my mind feels like it just took a crap after i saw these comments....

  • I think percussion history and appreciation should be a required course in schools all around the nation because every time I watch a drum solo on youtube, someone is trying to argue that Travis Barker is the greatest drummer of all time.

  • RIP Joe!

  • Obviously Joe Morello is far superior, but Barker has still got talent.

  • @TheAlexBasso anyone that brought up travis barker after they watched this video should step away from the screen and go fucking drown yourself for having a pathetic taste in music.. my mind feels like it just took a crap after i saw these comments....

  • hah John Bonham,,, loved jazz drummers like rich and Joe Morello,,

  • Didn't John Bonham do something similar?

  • RIP Joe Morello

    July 17, 1928 – March 12, 2011

  • anybody got a jazz cigarette?

  • this is a great video.

  • they don't get better than this.
