Shelley Duvall received "no sympathy at all" from anyone on the set. This was apparently Stanley Kubrick's tactic in making her feel utterly hopeless. This is most evident in the documentary when he tells Vivian, "Don't sympathize with Shelley." Kubrick then goes on to tell Duvall, "It doesn't help you."
@msmithstud Makes you wonder how hard it was for Shelley to act upset and distraught though... i think Kubrick deliberatly created an uneasy atmosphere for Shelly on the set. For example; All those visitors were allowed to come and fawn over Jack because it would make Shelly uneasy and insecure. Kubrick was in total control of his sets and i think Shelleys treatment was deliberate to get a convincing performance out of her. Great director?? yes... a nice person..? Thats debatable.
@nelsano3 Stanley was pretty tough. A bit of a perfectionist which is probably good depending on how you look at it. I read that the scene with Shelley and Jack on the stairs with the baseball bat took 127 takes before Stanley was satisfied with it.
@jwild611 Not at all. Her appearance doesn't match up with the very narrow standard idealized in entertainment, so that's what we're accustomed to. The role that cemented her image is one that really doesn't make her character very sympathetic, even as a victim. She's made to look like the way Jack, in the novel, chose to perceive his blonde wife in those moments of irritation and animosity. For whatever reason, Kubrick chose to make that her one dimension for the entire movie.
@bennoach The same was done with Jack and Danny. The scariest facets of the novel's characters were amped up and made to be one dimensional. Deep yes, but one dimensional. So Duvall is not Farrah Fawcett, but she has beauty.
This film is a masterpiece! Can you believe that when it came out it was nominated (I don't remember if it won) for a Razzie Awards?! You gotta love Jack Nicholson, he's amazing! Thank you for the videos (:
@SeabeeBuilder1973 Thats the sign of a true actor :P I mean look at he documentary he barely breaks character out of scene but it's delibrate it's like an on off switch :D
it's a directors viewfinder, it allows you to see the angle and focal length of the shot, to set up the shot without having to mount it on a camera or move the cameras position.
@Ubermensch18 directors use them to set up shots, alot like how a sniper has a spotter, since film is the directors vision they have to look at the shots and see what they like.

poor Shelley had to act hysterical and be upset the entire movie. Jack just had to be himself

I believe Kubrick saying "it doesn't help you" is a response to him being asked why he doesn't sympathize with Shelley.

Am I weird for thinking Shelley Duvall is very pretty(albeit in a very unconventional way)

@jwild611 Not weird at all. I personally don't, but it's very subjective, so whatever floats your boat. :)

I loved the way Kubrick shot scenes. Totaly unconventional, but that's what made the imagery so outstanding.

When Stanley says "that doesn't help you, you know" and Shelley Duvall is wiping her nose, are they talking about coke?
derpenstein 2 years ago
i think he meant the cigarette

I always figured Kubrick was referring to Shelley trying to get Viv on her side.

That was absolutely erie how Jack was in his crazed charecter mode then jumps back to being a polite normal person.

I don't know the name, but I assume it's just a lens to look through to see how shots are going to look without wasting film.
