The original British TV serious was cheesy, but it worked better: I guess that's the thing about movies, you never know if they're really going to work until you make them.
This was a great movie! Perhaps it's because I didn't read the books, but I've got some questions: what is the significance of the towels? What was happening with the President having two heads? and Who is that woman with the short, black hair? ... PS Martin Freeman is perfection :)
@beckadavidson Towels are just awesome, His head was cut up to keep secrets from himself or whatever he knew from just being blurted out, and the chick with the short black hair was the Vice President who wanted him to come back and stop acting silly.

@greenpaperplayer Noo, you solved the mystery! Now this universe will end and be replaced with something even more bizarre! Unless that has already happened....
Far from a perfect movie, but Martin Freeman is a *completely* perfect choice for Arthur Dent. No-one else can do permanently, terminally bewildered like Martin Freeman.
To all haters: Douglas Adams wrote this screenplay. He wrote many screenplays for the story which were, in fact, purposefully different from the book. Something tells me he's not turning over in his grave as much as many people think.
I remember seeing this when I was about ten and thinking the guy who played Arthur was cute. Now, watching it again when I know it's Martin Freeman, I realize just how intelligent my ten year old self was xD
Well the US big bucks trade off is the usual formula used..its very wittily satirised in STRIKE by comic strip and GLC (ken livingstone played by 'charles bronson')..
Thank you for putting this flick up here but I see all the disappointment in it now. The books were so good and this barely followed them. So much in this wasI never actually part of the plot. I mean its a good movie but I'm glad I've read all the books before watching this.
My point being, once again the original text has trumped the feature film by a long shot!
@MrAdenhayes Oh but thank FSM it's up at all. This may be the best US audiences can appreciate, and new and brighter generations with more curious minds may go on to find the books, or even the radio series. What a loss to creativity was Adams' death.
@MrAdenhayes There was a BBC mini- series that was directed by Douglas Adams, I suggest you watch that because it follows the books very closely (it was directed by the writer after all)
@MrAdenhayes Adams did the write the script! He wrote it ages ago, it was in production hell for 30 years!!!! It was only after his death that there was a massive surge of interest and sales from the books again that the film got commissioned.
@carat1120 Now there's a proper response. Read the books, further responses from your brain await, and you will not be disappointed. Listening to the the series, even better.
@cautleen no i've read the books, watched the bbc series, i own the movie...i celebrate towel day...i meant is this movie being allowed on youtube for real!? it just seems too good to be true. :)
@cautleen Found the comment! Seriously, I thought your response was really proper and in the spirit of Adams. It was meant as a compliment. And I think my message finally went through, but anyway, it does seem too good to be true, right
@SonOfMan001 They .. Upload them? If your asking how and that they are not taken off, it normally depends on the production company, they may say "Well we people aren't buying the dvd's anymore, so we don't give a fuck"
I really love Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent and Zooey Deschanel as Trillian, but I really hoped that they had changed many things in plot. Though, I loved this movie before I read the book, so maybe the awesomeness of the book confuses me when I'm watching this again.
this movie like many others suffers from an ongoing situation, ie we have the good ideas but not the money, so we go cap in hand to the USAA for the funding , there is of course the little that comes with this..we gotta have lots of american actors in it so as not to confuse the hard of thinking 16-26 yr old w.a.s.p.s who think any movie that doesnt have cars chases and explosions must be an art movie.and enough of those limey fag accents they cant understand...
You are really, really wrong. They did not have to use the few American actors that they did because of that some American company told them that they needed to use American actors, neither was American actors used because that some 16 year old Americans think that British accents are weird.
And the majority of the people in the movie do speak with one of the British accents.
i'd like to thank tmobile for throttling the playback and download of this movie...what? you didnt know? yep they get you to pay up only to mess you about so you pay them more just to have it right..its called extortion...
the downside to this was the fact that when the BBC decided to put THGTTG on TV something had to go to make room for it. It was The Goodies that got canned,sadly.....
For those of you who liked the movie should watch it with the commentary track by Martin Freeman, Bill Nighy, Garth Jennings and someone else. There is a lot of fun and interesting details in the movie which i think most people missed, for an example, in the vogon waiting room one the robots is the old Marvin from the Tv-series.
Should also add that there is another commentary track with a friend of Douglas Adams and someone else talking about changes in the different versions of the Hitchiker´s ..., Douglas Adams were actually more involved in the movie than you think.
watching this on 2012 lol. That guy playing Arthur is now JOHN WATSON while the girl is now JESS from New girl. I didn't know they were in a movie together and WOW that is so cool.
I'm not rating the book, and I know that books are better than movies. But this movie sucked dead donkey meat. Can I have my last 90 minutes back again?
@PooPoo2U your name actually says all we need to know about you !!!
Poo Poo to you to.
I bet you are the kind of person who burns houses down when people are inside them having a party just because you can't stand anyone enjoying themselves !!!
@SimplisticSusans7o67: Excuse me? I think your idiotic metaphor is the wrong way around genius, you're the one coming here to trash the movie, not me.
Well then, I suppose if we're using metaphors, you'd be one of those people who waits for a movie, pays to get in, then ruins it for everyone else with your constant obnoxious whining and complaining that "it's not just like the book".
Get over it you idiot, no one forced you to watch it.
@SimplisticSusans7o67: Uh, you do realize Douglas both helped with production and the screenplay, correct?
The worst injustice you can do to a person is to speak on their behalf when they're dead. If you don't like it, fine, but I've read the books, enjoyed the radio show, etc and loved the movie. You just sound like one of those "the book and nothing else" snobs.
@PooPoo2U Hummm only he died in 2001 and this film was released in 2005 so he wasn't there for the later stages of production and I doubt he wrote the dodgy script it was adapted from his stories but clearly not entirely his work.
If you have read the books perhaps you understand why this comes across as an abomination :-)
I'm sorry I'm not saying it is bad as a free standing film but after absorbing the original story this has missed out too many important parts and ruins many of the important
@SimplisticSusans7o67: You are also aware then how commonplace it is for a book-turned-movie to be tossed around for years prior to the movie being released, correct?
And no, even after reading the books I thought the movie was quite good for what it is: an 110 minute interpretation of a book you could hardly finish a chapter of in that time.
Of course the story's different, if it wasn't it'd take a week to tell.
and subtle yet very real concepts. The happy ending is particually shit !! The Earth and all the dolphins put back in place is nice for getting your kids to sleep but totally destroys the main point of the whole story, which is of the reality of a HOMELESS person in vast galaxy with NO TEA (worth drinking)
@thedisneypriestesss errrrrr the radio play was around on the BBC a couple of years before the 'book', English author and played by English actors, and btw there is no such thing as a British accent, Britain are Isles, your accent is either English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish.
@galgo3303 Calm down old boy, British actors do it best, wouldn't want to spoil it with a common american accent would we now, have a cup of tea and everything will be all right.
Watch the BBC series from about three decades ago. It is a much more accurate representation of the books in casting, plot, dialogue, and most definitely The Guide's descriptions of its entries. It is more simplistic, but does not undermind Douglas Adam's masterpiece as this 2005 film does.
@Draconilian Ever heard of a re-write? Because this film stinks of them. Just because Douglas wrote one or more drafts of the screenplay dosen't mean he wrote the one that was used (its pretty obvious he didn't, seeing as they waited until he died to actually film this, also it isn't half as funny as any of the books)
Gosh this movie has some amazing talents involved. Zooey Deschanel (New Girl, and Tin Man); Martin Freeman (Sherlock BBC Series); Alan Rickman (Harry Potter movies); Stephen Fry (Bones); Mos Def (The Italian Job); Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, Frost/Nixon) and Bill Nighy (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead). Just to name a few, and just a tiny portion of things they have done as well, because I enjoy watching them so much. :-)
The original British TV serious was cheesy, but it worked better: I guess that's the thing about movies, you never know if they're really going to work until you make them.

The reason it hasn't been taken down is because Martin Freeman is a BAMF!

Watch the BBC series from about three decades ago. It is a much more accurate representation of the books in casting, plot, dialogue, and most definitely The Guide's descriptions of its entries. It is more simplistic, but does not undermind Douglas Adam's masterpiece as this 2005 film does.

I've not read the book, but I really enjoyed this film. It reminds of films such as Time Bandits and Brazil.

This must be chuck norris's favourite film, because only chuck norris allows films to live for this long on youtube.

@stzzla yeah..... chuck norris can pull an ace from his t shirt.

but, all the differences where written by Douglas Adams, its just as valid as the books.
Draconilian 2 months ago
