But this song is obviously about everyone's god being the same, no matter what religion you follow. I don't think it's sad at all. It means that he is open to other worldviews and interpretations of god.

I don't know which interview you speak of, but I may propose a different meaning of the song. A meaning that does not say "all God's are the same God" (which I see as being completely false BTW [I'd be welcome to explain]), but that althought people may worship false God's and idols, we are still all under the same God.
