@MrStrav81 Right, she is a child. That's how most children behave in front of an audience when they are done performing a piece of music. Kids take a half bow -- it happens every day at hundreds of piano recitals around the world. There are exceptions, of course.
To all those who chide this youngster for her "emotional distance" and "lack of feeling," may I please submit that at age 13, she is perhaps 30 or 40 years too young to have experienced life's emotional and psychological pain and tumult that can only be "properly" expressed through this music by the experience of age. For Chelsea, this is little more than a technical exercise, as her manner makes clear after she strikes the last chords.
First of all its a fantastic performance and worthy of praise! Yes she *appears* to be in a bit of an emotional shell - however that doesn't mean she is emotionless - everyone has feelings. If someone is keeping them hidden, it is just a matter of getting them to open up. It is not easy but it is essential for growth and maturity so I do think she could spend some of her time training to explore ways of expressing her feelings through her interpretation of the piece.
I agree with Geo. Chelsea may not wear her emotions on her sleeve, but she has lots of technique and that doesn't come to a disinterested person unless they are gifted to begin with. What she'll do with music is anyone's guess but I hope she gets serious. She could do big things if she put her mind (and emotions) to it.
I'm bucking the trend here. This is an excellent performance. There are many recordings that i have heard that are not as good. Everyone is anxious to criticize a 13 year old, who gives a nearly flawless performance,.. and a lot of the criticism is a bunch of baloney!!!! The quality of the recording (distant microphone) is being blamed on the performer. I think this is a very articulate performance marred by imperfect recording devices. Less histrionics,.. A GOOD THING!!!
its amazing that for a girl of 13 years, she can play this difficult piece by Rachmaninoff. This piece is full of an extraordianry emotional turmoil. I am not an expert on his life, but i presume that maybe he wrote this music in his exile, bcos the nostalgia reaches here incredible force, maybe craving for his beloved russian land and people, bcos he couldnt get back to it. I get this feeling of flocks of birds rushing at dusk in the whirlwinds of his time and of his heart.
if she was white all these motha fucking haters would say she was so intouch with the piece i cant stand these pastey faced fucks who cant give black pianists credit they deserve fuck yall pink asses you bitches
@princeashtonsdad I really do think Chelsea should receive the proper credit she deserves, especially at such a young age! But, in that, the way you attribute this to a matter of racial prejudice and discrimination is far from the situation at hand here. Critiquing Chelsea & what is being said, in part is true, because she is very technical and almost "robot-like" but in saying that, she is gifted in the most amazing way, but will, in time, grow to interpret music past this "technical-stage."
@PeacefulStrife I agree with you. I'm from the school for playing the music accurately and with feeling, and if the physical body expression doesn't come naturally, there is no need to take a course in OVERACTING from Histrionics University!!!! The music speaks through her. If you want to hear a robot play the piece, try listening to a quantized midi version of this piece which is absolutely rhythm perfect!!!! SO much inferior to Chelsea's playing !!!! BRAVO CHELSEA !!!
@princeashtonsdad Relax man, I dont think anyone is worried about her color, I think people say she isn't "into it" because she isn't moving around much or showing a lot of facial expression. It is obvious she is very talented, and I think if she was closing her eyes and moving around, the same people would be saying more positive things.. People are very visual when watching music happen.. I thought she was puerto rican anyhow, shes pretty light skinned.
@gleventhal Ironically, it's the lack of (musical) color that people are harping about. Yes she is talented, but come on, she's clearly not musically mature enough for this piece just yet.
You truly are an amazing pianist and it takes true virtuoso talent to pull off the piece as you have just done, however it doesn't seem that you have a grasp of the emotionality and passion that it would really take to make the piece come ALIVE. Considering your age, you are amazing. I'm sure as you get older, though, you will fully understand the pieces that you conquer and be able to apply your interpretation as compared to technique. Best wishes.
@WhoLueYou dont hate jus cuz u cant play as amazing as my friend chelsea can. shes a beast on the piano and you know it! i WISH i could play as good as she does! if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all!!
good playing and it's good to to see her play the music, not spaz like some melodramatic weirdo. if you want to see something bob around, go fishing. just stop expecting it in the pianists.
I find it very robotic to say the least. Russian music breathes broadness and sentimentality, Chelsea, on the other hand, plays it with a military precision, no waives of dynamics, no culmination and no rubato. Having said that, I find her technical abilities are quite promising, and in time she will undoubtedly grow musically.
So a pianist moving around his upper body and making grimaces is a more emotional and better player? That's the most stupid thing I ever heard - LISTEN to music don't watch it! Close your eyes next time before making stupid comments!
And btw. feelings are something children don't have the same way adults have!
To Chelsea, you are obviously very talented, and you did an amazing job on this piece. Outstanding!
To everyone saying she needs to be more passionate or mature, does it not take passion to simply LEAR these things? What were you doing at 13 years old? Where are your videos? Perhaps you are attempting to sound cultured and intelligent by critiquing someone elses work? Perhaps you should spend time seeking your gift instead of judging someone elses...
@Pian0O0 no he doesnt russians are tought not to show emotion but let emotion from the piece speak to the listeners cause no one wants to hear a machine play because it is distasteful and a slap in the face to the audiance and boring
@Pian0O0 no he doesnt russians are taught not to show emotion but let emotion from the piece speak to the listeners cause no one wants to hear a machine play because it is distasteful and a slap in the face to the audiance and boring
How strong can she be at 13? I think it's very good. When she gets older, she can put more umph into it--particularly at the end. But you have to get the piece down first.
All she needs, for this piece anyway, is more strength. Slow down a tad and pound those keys at the end (before the final presto)...and it would really bring this piece home.
@hcgmomto4 I completely agree. But.. two things.. she's only been working on it for 3 months. So she needs to build that foundation first. Second, she probably needs a new piano teacher so that she can continue to grow. She's got the technique, great!, now it's time to make MUSIC.. hopefully she can find someone to bring that out of her or her gift will be wasted..
hcgmomto. I am sick of people going on about robots etc. If you want to see a performing seal, go to SeaWorld. Or maybe you could view American Idol for people showing lots of (phoney) emotion.
Chelsea's emoton comes out in her playing. Listen to her performance, and I think you will find that she is not "bored". I agree with most people (who love her here) commenting on Chelsea's playing. She is great, and she should certainly not change her style one iota.
...what can i say it's realy work from a realy gifted person, the way you play too...i think it is very important you work hard...the best way to multiply your talent...:)
the music she plays is astounding. it's as if she is being guided by god pulling her hands all over the keys and making it sound beautiful. I love your musical talent and don't stop playing your talent is precious
