Just finished Red Cliff part I on DVD. It simply does not live up to my expectation not to mention a funny mixture of modernity and ancientness. It seems to me Wu has been in a downward spiral of his cinematic flares since Broken Arrow and Face-off. Pity.

I like this movie because you can see some traditional chinese in it, and some strategy you could learn in those famous events.

The historical aspects of the costume design were very well done, they seemed to have done a great amount of research in the production and costume departments.

But the film was a bit of a disappointment in terms of cinematography, editing and special effects. There were beautifully shot scenes, but look of the film was very inconsistent. In some of the closeup shots u can see the makeup was really badly done, and some of the CGI was very fake.

For all you English speaking ppl who are scared off by walls of Chinese txt, here is some info about this:

This movie is based on a historic battle during the dawn of "3 kingdoms" period in China around 200AD (when Roman empire starts to decline). And Chinese ppl know more about the history of this period than anything else (I think). Politically, the battle resembles your "Union vs the Confederate", as the "Union" in northen china holds the more legitimate power and substantially more powerful

but the outcome and tactical aspect of the battle is more like "Battle of the midway" or "battle of agincult"

The North and the South are divided by a huge river. The North, like Japan, came down to a weakened South with alleged 800,000 (mostly real standing armies, not peasants or levys, men-in-arms)strong army and naval force to crush south's navy and land at south, and the South has 1/10th of that amount. but using fire and wind, South prevailed, North's fleet was gone,land invasion canceled.

The Movie itself promised an action similar to 300, similar situation, and the "300" side actually won.

There are love affairs (Marrying princess to foreign king, the sexy wives of the South) There are real magics (Meteorology actually)

Director is John Wu (Face/Off, and Mission: Impossible 2)

and the Cast is Huge, you may have never seen them, but key characters are all played by Chinese George Cloney / Matt Damon equivalents.

Budget of the film 800 mil. about 100mil US.

所以整部劇情的走法,跟本不像是電影手法, 而是電視劇的手法

基本上我覺得吳宇森拍'赤壁',是應該給予掌聲的,因為他和李安­是少數國際知名的導演,拍出來的電影才有機會在世界各地上映,讓­習慣看大堆頭希臘羅馬電影的世界觀眾,也看看中國歷史上可歌可泣­的故事.

但是,一直不太習慣電影裡面有太多科技的成分,尤其現在很多的電­影,利用太多的科技動畫產生千兵萬馬的浩大場面,實在覺得很假,­這是自己一直很抗拒的地方.我猜想'赤壁'可能也利用了很多這樣­的效果,當然這是電影的趨勢,很多人覺得理所當然,但真的希望這­種合成效果可以儘量減少.

Secondly the dialogue sounds too dumb and modern to have its epic and cultured appeal. Mainland tv series romance of three kingdom is the best! i really wish they stop making stop movies about 3kingdom if they cant do a better job... thumb down

Honestly, I know you have your own thoughts, but give John Woo some credit here. He put together a cast of all-stars for a movie that he wants everyone to enjoy, especially Chinese, not Westerners. You may not like the cast but John Woo knew that many Chinese people would love them, being that a lot of the cast is not known to Westerners.
