  • i am so sorry but guys , this is a poor performance .a sad interpretation . and before anyone accuses me of comparing , i am not asking for the London Production but this is such a lack of energy , drive , they are not convincing at all . i am surprised some people are saying this is good . good ? no amateur . i expect better from a " Broadway "

  • Oh my gosh! This is so funny! I just read a book about all these people, and it was from the point of view of the guy who played Asparagus, and this is exactly how it was. I like the video cast wayyyyyy better. :)

R.I.P. The guy who played Mistofelees in this video... Even though AIDS took your life, you'll always be in everyone's hearts.

  • @DefLeppard981 I'm ready the book too! I'm loving it so far. I got it for Christmas. :D

  • I just wanted to make a few points. The song is cut up because it had to fit the Tony Awards time slot. As far as comparing this cast to the video cast... it's just a stupid thing to do. Of course you cannot expect this cast to sound as good because they are singing while dancing. The video cast sang in a studio and did not have to worry about the quality of their voices while dancing. You should not compare this cast to the video cast because each cast performed under different circumstances.

  • this is the australian version when thay came out on the tent tour..i think

  • they completely butchered the song by cutting it up

  • I found Betty Buckley :D

  • This is a great show.. They've done it pretty well.. I like it.. But, I LOVE the Video cast..

  • Theater is much more complicated than footage, in my opinion. Costumes, fast changes, technical thingies, all that stuff. With footage, everything is much much more organized. But I am very much surprised with this original cast. they're pretty good, to be honest, without comparing.

  • ...That is one of the best looking Munkustraps I've seen.

  • The lady who played Jellylorum came to my school today and sang a little bit, she sounded really good!! :D

  • 1:25 - she looks SO scary.

  • Ok......

London DVD cast compared to this.

    1. Our costumes and makeup are better.

    2. I can tell who the cats are on the DVD

    3. We didn't miss half the song out.

Don't hate me, I'm just saying.

  • @NatalieAnnFox The only reason you can tell who the cats are is because you've seen them throughout the rest of the show- if the entirety of the Broadway cast was filmed, you'd be able to spot them all here (Heck, I still can despite that). As for the makeup, this was 1982. The video cast is 1998. And it's done for television and not for stage, with different matters in consideration for each.

Seriously, know the contexts before making unfair comparisons.

  • 1:50 lolage!

  • 1:52 = Holy shit. XD

  • To all the young "critics"....remember, this was the original cast. They've had a few years to perfect the timing. ;)

  • Sigh..... I just read a fanfic story about ten minutes ago on Timothy Scott.....I CRIED SO HARD! RIP Timothy.... Anyways, I do really think this is a little to fast. It seems like Andrew Lloyd Webber didn't like this song to begin with because he made them rush threw it! XD

  • Oh Timothy Scott the original Broadway Mistoffelees, fantastic preformer ,may he RIP. I have to say i do prefer Jacob Brent as Mistoffelees though he puts alot into the character. It seems to rushed, the movie however allows you enough time to see all of the wonderful choreography but this is still wonderful.

  • what's awesome is how some characters are instantly recognizable! i mean a lot of the costumes are different and yeah of course the film one are of better quality. BUT i instantly recognized bomularina, casandra munkustrap of course! i just think it's cool for the productions to stay true to the look of some of these characters

  • it feels very very rushed!!! i like the video cast better!!! WAY better BTW!!

  • Is this a vhs?

  • LMFAOLMFAOLMFAO FAGGOT AT 1:52

  • they r not puting filling in it

  • they r not puting filling in it

  • they talk to fast

  • The reason why this is rushed and super different is because in 1983's original broadway, they added a few more lines. And becaus eof that this cast followed T.S. Eliot's original one. And Before they thought that's how cats should look like, so nothing's weird at all. I mean, this is the 19's.

  • hahah I think this ones better than the video version. Not the shots, of course. But the actors are better... They act more like real cats. The makeup, though... it's not the best, but it's the first, so. It's more illuminated here too, and it helps to see the whole coreography when theyre all dancing simultaneously.

  • MY TERRENCE! I totally forgot he was Rum Tum Tugger! <3

  • i just played 1 second of it and herd it and went ewww!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why all the cats reminds me David Bowie the wigs might be?

  • it might be because of the wigs but all the cats reminds me David bowie

  • I with there was more posted with the original Mistoffelees. I would have loved to hear him sing by himself.

  • I love the DVD version.

Im sorry but the cast for this kind of scares me :(

  • @darkspiritentity

    me too ! :S

  • Totally 80's. I mean while phantom of the opera, which came out four years later, was victorian french opera style, CATS was completely 80's from music to costumes. The movie cast had more money to spend on costumes, editing, and the style of the costume was changed because different actors played the parts. The movie wasn't all one cast.

  • Wonderful to see this, definitely an important moment in Broadway history.

I won't compare it to the video cast. Too very different animals, heh. ;)

  • Rule No. 1 of posting on YouTube. If you don't have a way of capturing video other than pointing a camcorder at a TV, DON'T post on YouTube!

  • 1:52 haha, what a face!

  • So, given the multiple angles and the changing shots... This was professionally filmed. Ah... does it exist? Rather, is it possible to obtain it, without it being a second-hand recording off a TV?

  • I think everyone like the video better because theyre used to it and expect everyone to be up to par with it. The video cast had MUCH longer too work, and more times too perfect it, it being recorded and all.

And this is older so the costumes arent as great.

  • there's one video here in youtube which shows a bit behind the scenes of the video version of this play and i think the make-up artist said that they had to change the make-up and make it softer since the performers are gonna act in front of cameras and not audiences

  • Okay, I've kinda changed my mind about what I said 9 months ago. Kinda. I mean, yeah the singing's still a bit... But I've seen worse costumes. And it is the OBC.

I still say the video cast is better though.

  • Awesome video and song..I saw this play in 1984 in new york and loved it!!! Thanks so much for posting it!!

  • Old Deuteronomy looks so WEIRD in this one!

I like the video one MUCH better. These costumes are kind of CREEPY! XD

  • their makeup is really harsh, the dancing in the video is better, ive went to see the new one 2ce and i absolutely love it. this ones just...kind of sucks. who agrees?

  • They look like zombiees

  • the only thing that this version has that the video version doesnt have is that i can understand what the words are......but if i had to chose to donate money between either or..... it would be the video version

  • Their make-up scares me. And most of the voices are... bad. At least all of the men's.

I admire it for being the original Broadway performance, but after watching this I had to go back to watching the movie-version for comfort.

    Oh, my poor childhood...

  • RIP Timothy Scott.

  • @HaydenWinnett321 He was the BEST!!! He inspired me to start dancing!!! :) O I WISH HE WAS STILL ALIVE! :(

  • who plays the rum tum tugger in this verison

  • Terrence Mann

  • @severuspotter thay sing way to fast

  • Kinda scary at 1:35 where are her EYES???????????

  • that was horrible the video cast is like really better and it sounds rushed. the video cast has better dancing and singers.

  • @mimi8675 The reason this seems rushed is because this performance is from the Tony Awards, and thus there was only a certain amount of time for them to be on stage.

  • ehh. went kinda fast. and the make up is scary chizzz!

  • make up needs improvement

  • Cats is touring in adleiade, and i saw them today

    they were AMAZGIN

everything from their costumes, singing, dancing and the choreography was simply fantastic

    amazing overall!

  • omg that's terrible. :( RIP.

I wish the entire original musical was on here :/

  • at :44 munk barley(spelling?) grabs her vic and he grabs her butt with his hand/arm also this old deuteronomy scares me.

  • I prefer the European versions (old and new), but I think that if they were given more stage time, they would have performed with much more enthusiasm :/ But I like this makeup/costume design almost as much as the beautiful British design, because of the variety and wildness :3 some of the expressions make me giggle

  • there outfits got better by the years!

  • true that!!!

  • They skip alot of the song. :(

  • thats cuz they're at the tonys and they need to keep the thing moving. . .

  • I'm sorry but they're singing hurts my ears

  • the choreography was okay

  • i totally agree HorseyBabe12. But I really like Timothy Scott who plays Misto. He's really cool lookin.

  • HE WAS A COMPLETE LEGEND!!! Get the book "Diary of a Cat: The the Broadway Production of CATS was Born." It really explains EVERYTHING ABOUT TIM!!! Unfortunately he collapsed dead on the stage of West End (during the invitation) cuz of AIDS :(

  • WHATS WRONG WITH THERE EYSE???

  • This is seriously weird. I think the video cast are WAY better than this lot. Their voices are better, their costumes are better, their dancing is better - have I made my point???

  • you are so right i wish the video cast would've did a tour. also i can't find the songs from the movie version either ughhhhhhhhhh

  • The movie version had most of the people from the london cast at the time. I thinkthey were all the same excpt mungo, rumple, jemima and skimble. If you find the original london cd, then youll find one that sounds like the movie version ^^

  • you can find the orig. 1981 london on amazon. . . many of the people from the vid. cast joined many worldwide productions (dutch etc.) and many joined the later b'way and west end productions. . . actually the ol' deut from the vid. cast is in that video right there as old deut. . .

  • @HorseyBabe12

Umm... Agreed. :/ They were given the title of "Best Cast For CATS", anyway. And hey EARNED IT, DEFINITELY.

  • jenny aany dots scares me :(

  • i'm awaiting her friend request on fb. . .lol :P

  • Its Sarah!

  • why are there two white cats?

  • Lady Griddlebone or?

  • One of them is Etcetera, she hassome brown in her wig and unitard, but it's hard to notice.

  • well idk if im right but there is victoria and grittlebone who is white i think

  • They're kind of scary looking... But I love CATS.

  • The only reason it seems rushed is because they had to fit all of that AND all of Memory into 1 Tony performance time slot so.......

  • I agree with you on that. They seem to have had a lot more time to develop everything a lot better when they made the movie version of this.

  • I like a lot cats, the musical is good but in your video 1:52 is funny cause see the face, lol, well bye

  • it does feel very rushed. an the one on dvd that i have when their grouped together is sung differently. and a show falls down in front of them at one point. truley different styles. thanks for shareing

  • WELL, this version was the original broadway cast,

while in the dvd, they sped it up (since almost all the dancers on the dvd had previous roles in CATS)

  • This version is the Broadway version. And they're at the Tony Awards.

  • y do they rush so much? these costumes r soo cheesy back then!!! is this seriously real?? AWESUM

  • It felt so rushed.

  • sorry but i dnt like this original

  • HAHHA!!! I love this! I just got back from the broadway show in Seattle today!!!

    It was amazing!

  • I'VE NEVER SEEN THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY!!! THAT WAS GREAT!! i still like it now better! :) makeup has improved since then a little too. :) still great!

  • I just went to watch this first row in the Singapore Esplanade theatre. It's super... I recommend everyone to go watch it.

  • I've listened to "Cats" soundtrack for pert near two decades without ever having seen the original Broadway (or any visual) version. Occured to me to youtube it and - viola! I must say that I prefer what is toted as "original" performance to other, despite any improvement in costuming. Nonetheless, 'tis a wonderful piece of art with which to encourage the imagination run wild. Glad it exists! BTW just a farm gal, so real theatre is out of my reach.

  • If you were dating a chick that was in the play would you have her come home sometimes in the costume? I would... sorry, I would...

  • OMJ im dancing to this :S its sooo hard ;P

  • demeta's face is so weird!!

  • Everytime the Mistoffolees (Timothy Scott) sings "Dive through the air.." I want to cry. He died from AIDS in 1988 and was a great Mistoffolees. The Old Deuteronomy costume cracks me up every time.

  • I want the CDVD, but I have the video and the player's broken -.-

  • Love it!

  • At the end, they sound kind of hysterical. However, I like the song.

  • At 1:57-1:59 what happend to the cat's eyes?

  • I think the london version is much better ! this version is way too fast !!!

  • why does it seem like there are two Victoria's ? At the beginning there looks like there is two white cats ?

  • One of them is an early Broadway/London Cettie. Her early costume evolves into Rumpleteazers costume, because she doubled for her in Original Broadway.

  • ohh , thanks :]

  • yeah, it looks like there are two...but you can't have two??!!

PS. Nr mistoffoleese is DA BEST EVA

  • WHOO HOO! MY FAV. SONG FROM CATS!

  • At 2:23 - 2:24 there's skimble. At 2:35 - 2:27 there's gus in the back left. At 2:39 - 2:41 there's tugger. At 2:41 - 2:43 there's a better vier of gus. At 2:44 - 2:47 there's skimble again. At 1:41 - 1:43 there's Alonzo. At 1:22 - 1:27 (the orange cat) there's jennyanydots. Don't believe me? See my parents who see me glued to the computer looking up CATS.

  • ...why would we accuse you anyway? paranoid aren't ya lol :P but thanks for tellin us :)

  • I can spot Timothy Scott in there.

  • 1:52-1:53 xDDD

  • they have scary eyes at the beginning

  • I love this musical :D

  • my fav musical like......ever lol

  • i think cats is a really good show..

but watch the orange cat-girl from 1:22 - 1:26.. so funn lol

  • i saw the play cats at the apollo high school in sauk rapids minnesota

  • i recently saw this show for the second time. i had seen when i was about 4. it scared the shit out of me. now i realized that its alright...

  • Well that depends on your defination of "ok" it's still crepy no mater how old you are. Lol

  • Oh, don't be mean to Darkrangerofthedeep whoever gave her a thumbs-down. She's my friend, and she means well, it's just, she doesn't have a great sense of what's funny. No offense meant, DROTD. :D Seriously. I probably couldn't have handled that when I was 4.

  • What are you, a man or a mouse?

(MOUSES R AFRAID OF CATS, get it?)

  • i personally liked the film better and i am not saying this sux or anyhting because i love both i just prefer the film this one is rushed

  • this version is kinda fast

  • this is a shortend version of the proper song it cut 2 verse's

  • I wouldn't say the film version is better. they're both awesome! I love the makeup in this one, it's just so diffrent from what you see in the movie, it's nice for a change.

I like how the video version is slower though, and you get to see more of the cats as they sing.

  • is it just me, or does the makeup really freak anyone else out? they kinda look like zombies.

    film version pwns

  • Its funny how The Rum Tum Tugger was partially inspired by Mick Jagger, cause during the video I couldn't stop thinking that!

Also, who's the girl with solo during memory?

  • Its funny how The Rum Tum Tugger was insipired by Mick Jagger partially. Cause in this video I kept thinking about how he looked so much like Mick Jagger xD

  • Yeah I think the film version is so much better.. I guess I'm just a bit spoiled with it XD

  • my nana and mum saw the original london cast and always say 'OMG it was so much more amazing' and i supose it was for the time. but nothing can beat the film version now! sorry if u disagree! cast, costume etc.

  • Yeah I think you're right...

I just bought the DVD and I watch it so much my brother almost broke it in half =D

But this is also pretty good =]

  • Hmm, I prefer the costumes and the make-up on the film version.

  • It's almost the same dance as in the movie. I like the movie cast a lot more though.

  • first of all..its the RUM TUM TUGGER, and his line is "can you say of your bite, that it's worse then your bark."

  • wich one is the rum tiger

    ??

  • WTF 1:52

  • LOL!!!!!!! :-)

  • HAHAHAH

  • was the person playing misoffelees Jacon Brent?

  • god, no. Jacob has a much more boyish face.

  • oh ok thnxs. i like jacob brent better thou

  • Not even close to the London version....:/

  • i like the london cast better

  • ya same

  • Just wanted to point out that this is the First Cast from the Broadway production on October 7, 1982. The production that is shown on the DVD in the making of cats is showing the first Cast from The first ever show debuted in London's West End in 1981.

  • lol, yes

  • 2:01 was that chewbacca singing?lol

  • this has jus been recorded of the tv lmao!

  • I love this!!!

  • I LOVED THE BRODWAY SHOW!this was one of meh fav songs too =D

  • lol 1:52

  • Damn, in this play they look a lot sexier :P

  • Is this play good? It's coming to my town next month and i am seeing it. is it good?

  • CATS is the best musical ever!!!

  • ok thanks well i guess i'll be expecting alot of this play then lol... But what is this play about though?

  • It's basically all about these cats that want to be reborn and come back to a different life. The music is amazing and lyrics are awesome. I've seen it 8 times life, so i'm pretty sure i know what i'm talking about!!

  • i agree with smooth395 :) this is amazing if you want my opinion. i have also seen it 8 times and i will never get bored :D

just out of interest when/where are you seeing it?

  • I'm afraid not. :-( On THIS DVD ("Broadway's lost treasures") there are only this two songs from CATS (Jellicle Songs and Memory). On this DVD you can also found other parts from another musicals ("Annie" for example or "Cabaret" with Joel Grey from the early 70's). But I don't know anyone who can have the whole Show (I'm also searching for it. :-) )

I only have the whole Show from Germany (Hamburg 1999) and from Vienna (1989) and of course the Video. Sorry. :-(

  • Ohh! Tim Scott as Misto!!!! :-) I have the DVD: this video and Memory with Betty Buckley is on "Broadway Lost Treasures Vol.1" !

  • Do you know if the Origional Broadway cast did a video? (this cast)

If so I'm SO buying, no matter how much it is!!

  • 0:11 is Terrance Mann

  • At 2:42 does that guy gave a mustache??? well if he does not rlly cat-like cause cats don't have mustaches lol!!!
