Poetry's language is not direct and straight forward. If he is talking about alcohol then it doesn't mean that actually he is a drunkard or alcohol addicted person.

I am sorry to say that you are just taking the literal meanings (dictionary meanings of a sentence or a phrase) and not trying to understand the meanings hidden in a sentence, where as poetry consists of alot of similies, metaphors, personification, illustrations and other such things. Poetry's language is not direct and straight forward. If he is talking about alcohol then it doesn't mean that actually he is a drunkard or alcohol addicted person.
