I find these comments annoying. I don't like when people say "I'm sure that he passed on and was forgiven" because all that really happened in this man's story was the death of a young kid and a man haunted to the end of his days with guilt that he didn't deserve
Regardless of your religious beliefs, don't cheapen the horrors of war, don't belittle what men like Mr. Robertson went through by stapling on a happy ending. Don't give this harrowing tale a hollywood ending just for your peace of mind

I feel pretty sad when I hear stories about war. There are young men and women who die out there on both sides. They are diying fighting for something they were forced to believe (religion, politics, money) and on both sides the only ones getting the proffit are guys sitting in offices who have never fought in their lives. Its very sad: they believe in the cause, but the ones who made the cause hardly believe in it.
You have to remember though. On both sides the soldiers know what can happen to them. The other side knows just as well as ours does that they could die at any time. But they volunteered to fight for their side. They were prepared for the risk. I dont think they would want any pity. They have pride.

I have no doubt, Mr. Robertson, that when you passed over, this soldier angel was the first one to greet you on the other side. He would have wrapped you in his arms and you would have felt only unconditional love coming from him. All your pain, sadness, and guilt would have disappeared in an instant...for the unconditional love encircling you would have blotted all else out.

Some people fight for the country, others fight for experience and unfortunately, others do fight for the thrill. In fact, I wouldn't really justify killing with the phrase "do what we have to do" much. The winter was cold and brutal and people were dying by the day. That was their only option if they wanted to survive. @manatyson That is very true. Actually, I talked about this with someone else on this page lol but the fact is that most people thought that we fight for fun. Some people fight for the country, others fight for experience and unfortunately, others do fight for the thrill. In fact, I wouldn't really justify killing with the phrase "do what we have to do" much. Truth is, the reason I enlisted was to fight for the ones I love and to keep those who need help safe from harm. Even for that price.

My grandad told a war story. It was about this guy he knew in his unit. Said man was a sniper. He couldn't stop thinking about this guy he shot, because when he was looking down the scope, he could see he had a ring and a family photo pinned to his shirt. My grandad got through by imagining enemies not as people, but just uniforms.

Killing someone is really not easy... When I was young, I always thought that war was fun. But only after a certain age did I know it was such a pain to shoot someone... Killing them. orphaning their children or widowing their wives. Making their parents weep and all their sibling cry... And my friends still think that its ok to sacrifice a million of of people just to achieve victory. I wished that we were not made this way. We must have benevolence and compassion.... @painokitos We are all mammals, if that's what you mean, and killing for reasons beyond necessity if part of that world. Human or not.
The way you use the word "animal" in your first post is to describe humans as primitive and barbaric, am i correct? That's the feel i got from it in that sentence.
So if I've got this: You say we are the real animals for having wars, while my point was that animals are no better than us.
Animal is latin for "Having Breath", puts the word in perspective? ;D

@painokitos I don't see how the liberation of Europe was unjust. Seriously. I mean you could see two sides to almost any war, but World War 2? pretty ahrd to side with Facism. Also, you're changing around your dieas now. Waging war is okay now, so long as it's justified?

War should be illegal. War cannot solve problems, it is a problem itself. When our soldiers come back these are the reasons they are so messed up, not only because what they did also because what they were made to do. They see the faces and hear the screams they had killed again and again. Human bond is above all boundaries of religion, cultural differences, color, cast and creed. Even though they had survived the battle, memories of battle kill them everyday for the rest of their lives.

War should be illegal. There is enough land for everyone, enough food for everyone, leave a better world for the generations to come and die in peace.

@1098910989 your not getting it, the nazis planned to take over the world and eliminate all not aryans if the second world war had the germans as the victors, very few of us would be alive today. im not saying that war is a good thing but technology would be no where it is today if everythuing was peaceful, we would not be communicating and storycorps would not be shairing these wounderful storys if it had not been for war

I met a young german who told me that they know and reconize that their actions during ww2 were wrong. also, where do you think the internet came from? videogames, microwaves, ect... why do you think we made it to the moon? and no one mentiond wmd's those are a whole nother story.

@1098910989 (Part 2) Second, I never said that all technology came from war, but alot did including advances in medical science. And i know what a WMD is, what it does, how it works, and it's effects on near by people, but before the bombs were droped, the United States droped paper warning of the comming danger. Again, im not saying war is good, im just saying that it is not 100% bad, there are some good things.

i cant say wars good, but the thing is, this stuff has to happen. Im not saying the man should toughen up, because if that happened to me, i would probably be just as sad, but things like this need to happen to make history.
