The best thing about this song is that you can interpret it in many ways. It can easily be a love song for broken hearted people. It brings some confort too. The part that he sings to her about not laughing at him when he is in pain because you (she) will come back one day and he will reject her....but he is not sure about it...damn it shows that my girlfriend left me after 9 years of relationship.... :). So I interpret this song this way and I do feel better whether I am only dreaming or not.

@fio1310 Tom Chaplin, the singer of the band, had answered this question in an interview and he said that "bedshaped" refers to those patients in the hospitals who stay in that lying-shape in bed for a long time. @BeetsMovies actually they also use the bass guitar (Fender Precision bass played by Tim-Rice Oxley)... Programming (the chiming background noises)... So no, its not just 3 instruments. If you ever tried to play with only a drum kit, voice and 1 piano, the music would be amazingly dry. BTW the instrument that makes Keane's music sound epic (that low rumble during the chorus that sound like a full orchestra) is the bass guitar - my fav instrument. Only 1 bass guitar.

I believe the song is symbolic of someone who is unable to abandon all hope that his or her longtime love will return on their own, and deep down they know they are a fool. But what do I know.
