although she was the top dancer of her time....she didnt dance too good in this vid..she was a little chunky in da face...im thinking that's where she gains her weight
Utaka: Your teacher is partly right - it's a long story. The bedla (the skimpy two piece costume) was introduced in the 30s by the promoter of dancers like Safia Gamal, who did star in a couple of Hollywood productions. This was a very, very short resumé for you.
nothing about the laws. I am egyptian and Egyptian dancers danced always with the belly shown including fifi, but she dances also with a different style "balady" with this long dresses or galabia...u can also show talent if u dont show the belly, great dancer
One of my teachers is from Egypt and was a principal dance for Firqa Kaoumia. "Belly dance" come from Balady so Utaka's teacher is right from that prospective. The two piece costume was largely influenced by Hollywood. Dresses are more typically worn with Balady, Saidi and other folkloric dances these days but some still wear dresses for Raks Sharki. Not long ago there WAS a law in Egypt that women needed to cover their bellies and thus wore mesh covers, so Eugenia is right too.
there were a few laws before in Egypt where you coudnt show yr belly, or do shop floor. Now is a bit different in some parts of the country, i was told, is a bit more free.
I've been told from my bellydance teacher, that NOT showing the belly is the real egyptian style....the other scimpy costumes are just for show, she calls it "hollywood style" =)
