  • You did good! very helpful

  • @morganod Thank you!

  • 10 sigs is a lot. I'd definitely condense them. I don't measure the width of the sigs; I use graph paper to make a pattern of the spine, figure out where the holes should go, then sew the sigs in where they fit--it's not about how wide they are; it's about how much room you have in the width of the spine. There can be spaces between the sigs if need be.

  • @ricefz Again, thank you! Did you ever figure out how you were going to keep the journal you showed us how to make ... closed? LOL I'm thinking about using a strip of the same cover leather, make slots in the back and just wrap it around. Making this journal is great fun!

  • @NolaGB I think I did exactly that--I used a long thin strip, enough to wrap around a couple of times. I don't remember how I attached it, but I think it was the slits in the back and then threading it through itself--the common way those strips are attached. (Sorry--I don't know what it's called, but you see it on commercially made leather books that have those straps.)

  • Enjoyed your video and learned a lot, but I'm trying to figure out how to hide the knots on the outside of the spine. The book (journal) I'm making is for a male friend, so beads won't work. Any ideas??

  • @NolaGB Maybe something metal instead of beads? Washers? Small metal things with holes drilled in?

  • @ricefz Thank you! This is my first journal & I'm not sure about something. I have 10 signatures, each with 5 folded sheets (he wants a lot of pages). This will require 10 holes in the soft leather cover. How do you determine how wide the spine will be? Press down on all signatures or stack them & measure the width across? Ten holes seems like an awful lot. Should I perhaps combine the signatures (10 folded pages per sig.), decreasing the number of sigs? Thank you for your help!

  • This is fantastic for a beginner. Thank you!

  • Is the spine just leather too or is there cardboard or something in it? Thank you sooo much this is an amazing video!

  • @CanadaDrysgirl I glued an extra piece of leather (or thick fabric, for some of them) inside along the spine to make it sturdier. You could use cardboard, but I'd wrap it in fabric first, or maybe decorative paper--it will show a little, and cardboard is kind of ugly unless you're going for a grunge look, in which case I'd go for it! Good luck, and thank you for watching~~

  • LOVE this!!!!! Thank you!!

  • how did you close the cover. i got the exact same results but the cover doesnt stay still

  • Wow, you are the best, I always wanted to learn this, I think I can do one now. Thanks for sharing!

  • Wonderful tutorial! But........... It would be nicer if the camera was about 3 inches

    higher:)

  • omg you're so cute

  • hi! thanks for the videos! very easy to follow! Love your background music.

  • @babyflorence Thank you!

  • lefties!!!

  • Thank you for posting this! I couldn't find a part 3. How did you end up finishing it off? Or are you waiting for a magical "round2it" to appear b4 U finish it ;)

  • @khaughey66 Sorry about not doing part III--I finished this one and a bunch more, but it wasn't very exciting--just trimming the covers and adding a long leather strip to wrap around it--so I never videoed it. So sorry--I should do that, but then I'd have to start from scratch and make another book to get to the point to show how it's finished, and I'm not making books right now and have given away most of the ones I made.

  • @ricefz well you've done such a wonderful job of the book that I hope you reconsider and post a vid for the finishing touches. Maybe a pic and walk through of the finishing steps via voice over??? Thanks :-)

  • Thank you for posting this, I found it very helpful!

I also like the music you've got playing in the background, who's the artist?

One last thing, what's that pink thing in the background with the gold (antlers?) coming out of it?

  • @thefungarian Thank you! Glad you found it helpful. I don't know what the music is--it was radio in the studio on a jazz station. The pink thing--years ago I bought a cardboard box of antlers at an estate sale--they are wild goats, I think, but I don't know. I hated that something had been killed, and I didn't want these to go to waste. So I sprayed-painted this one (and will do some of the others) and attached it to a painted wooden heart-shaped base and screwed it to the wall to hold malas.

  • I'm doing this for my school project, do u think I could use 3 pieces for each signature? Also, where do u get the supplies?

  • @OreoGoesRawrr If you mean three pieces of paper, yes. You can adjust those however you want. For the book binding thread, you'll probably have to order it, but you can use a heavy-duty thread from the fabric store just as easily, or some fake sinew or waxed linen or hemp from the craft store (check in the beading and leatherwork sections). Any heavy paper will do. Use leather scraps--I go to the thrift store on half-off day and buy leather skirts and jackets that are out of style & cut them up.

  • @ricefz Oh, Okay! I just found the Tala site on your blog. The video is going to be very helpful! Thank you! :)

  • great idea. I plan to try this. I will probably lay the tongs of my clips flat as not to catch.

  • Oh, thank you soooo much for posting this! I've wanted to make a small sketchbook for a while (as a 9x12 is unwieldy on the go) and this is such a great help! I was having a hard time finding a full walkthrough.

  • Thank you very much for both videos. They are most helpful.

  • thank you for making this look easy, I am going to try it. Who is your leather supplier, I have been looking at the leather they sell at stores like hobby lobby , but they are so small

  • @JraiLuvChild I try to use leather from coats, skirts, etc., from the thrift store because I'm opposed to hunting, etc.. I shouldn't use leather at all, but if it's recycled, I don't feel as bad. If you're buying new leather, try Tandy's. But first look at Goodwill (ours has clothes 50% off on Sundays) and the Salvation Army (50% off on Fridays--yours may differ, but check!)

  • Thanks for the clear, simple crafter's method without a lot of official book binding equipment needed!

Do you have any suggestions for making a book like this that pages can be added into later?

  • @ShareHomeVideos Sorry, I've never done that. Maybe adding them in as page extensions? Good luck~~

  • Love it... I'm making one of those and your way of making it seemes way easier... and fun. You're really funny, your comments looks like a aunt of mine... I love her.

    Thank you!

  • Lol your little comments are so cute. Thanks a lot for these videos, so helpful!

  • Thanks so very much for this video. I've been trying to make sense out of diagrams from a book, good book but nothing replaces seeing it done. Thanks, thanks, thanks, and thanks again!!!!!!!

  • @babsy1955 So glad it helped you! Hope you have many, many hours of bookbinding adventures (it's addictive+)~~

  • @ricefz Good to find your great instructions, having done a class a few weeks ago I am so liking making books and always looking for new ideas.....many thanks

  • did you ever finish it?

  • @loungeblogger Yes I made a bunch of these. There are all kinds of ways to finish, with straps or button closures or just a rubber band.

  • now i can make my own diaries ^^

  • i love you

  • when i book bind sometimes i use unwaxed floss for my thread....instead of bookbinding thread....

  • thank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank youthank you.....

    ....thank you!

  • @333EduardThe you're certainly welcome!

  • what do you do with your books? Like do you draw in them, write in them, or just show them off?

    -thanks

  • @TheBananered i carry one in my bag to take notes and stuff. they're perfect for that. or you can put one in your pocket (like a large coat pocket).

  • @ricefz cool! thanks for replying! (i just subsrcibed)

  • I wish my grandma was just like you miss. She would be probably best grandma in the whole world- punk rocker grandma and metalhead grandson :D (I don't say she's bad, but sometimes too much conservative...). Once again I'll say- informative, well done and really nice video :) Best regards, Greg

  • Thanks for this tutorial! You've given me the confidence to muddle my way through a small leather travel journal. Wish me luck! :D

  • @mdolera Good luck! And have fun~~

  • @ricefz Thanks a lot! ^_^ Do you have any other resources on how to sew leather journals? :)

  • Do you do any other types of book bindings?

I have a project for university, and i need to create a book - i've already made a japanese stab stitch.

    thanks x

  • @SeanSymphony I've done other binding but don't have any videos of those--mostly sewing traditional text blocks and gluing those into covers--the "real book" binding. I'm sure there are lots of great tutorials out there, though. Good luck!

  • what a messy work space. the tutorial seems poorly thought through. sloppy!

  • im probably years too late. but i got to admit, i like ur tutorial compared to others that i have seen. it can never bores me. XD i like it! thanks! =D

    xoxoox

  • Great tutorial! I like your sense of humor too. This was very enjoyable to watch and I learned much.

  • IM SO PISSED!!!! X(

lol i should have seen this video before i tried making a book lol (epic fail) i got glue all over the house(fall on his knees*sniff* T_T) lol well at least i know what not to do. Thanks for the information great job

(better than the last vid that i saw from this other guy, ..... it was way to complicated ) youre's is easy to understand thank you =)

  • sorry about the Glue Disaster. hope your next bookbinding adventure is WAY smoother--

  • Thanks! This was very helpful

  • Your Awesome LOL

  • thanks, sweetie!

  • I'm tryed to make it today (watched this yesterday night) and it worked really good. The one thing though is that when I put the pages into each other, the outside of it (The part where you turn the pages) in kind of went in a triangle shape ... Any advice?

  • yeah, it will do that because of the thickness of the pages. if you have a heavy-duty paper cutter, you could trim the edges after you're done. i just pretend it's part of the design and go with it!

also--you could measure and cut the pages before you sew--make the inside ones just a little narrower~~

  • Awesome, thanks (: Are you working on any other designs? Maybe a hard cover? I'll keep checking back (:

  • I'm a twin and my bro & I enjoy to writeing stories. I also like to draw and I get tired of buying books so I wanted to make my own. Thanks to your videos I will. Thanks so much and keep up the good work. ^^

  • thanks to you, I've learned how to make my own assignment pad and it works very well in school!

  • oh, good--thanks so much for telling me this~~ it makes me happy to know it was useful to you!

  • Hey. This is the best instructional video I've ever watched. It's like a friend is explaining it to me. I think I'll be trying many more of these books. Thanks a lot.

  • thanks--that's exacctly what i was trying for: like we were sitting around sharing techniques and stuff. have fun with it!

  • it was a bit hard to see in this one but i think i might have gotten it

  • hope so--sorry it was hard to see, but it's also hard to video yourself--yiii!

  • great video!

  • WOw... your video really help me.. thanks... X_x.. by the way i also luv your tattoo... really cool...

  • thanks, sweetie--so glad it helped!

  • wonderful, thanks for sharing.

  • can you use any other thread then book binding thread? plz respond!!! btw love the tutorial.

  • oh, sure: i've used heavy-duty carpet thread and simple embroidery floss. you can use any kind of thread or cord that's sturdy enough not to break. even strong dental floss or, i would guess, fishing line! give it a try--what's there to lose? if it falls apart, you get some other thread and sew it back--

  • i use Alene's Tacky Glue for most gluing. leather to leather, i use leather glue. on one cover, i cut three slits and wove in a long strip with a slice in it, so it could go around and then though itself--for a long leather closure: it wraps around a couple of times and tucks into itself.

  • thanks for this video! how did you reinforce the leather? did you just glue pieces together? what glue? and lastly, i am curious as to what you do with the covers once finished...do you put snaps? or do you cut to size and glue pages to the outmost pages among your signatures? LOVE THE JAZZ!

  • Really enjoyed this tutorial (both parts).

    Many thanks.

    Cheers

    Wendy

  • thanks, sweetie!

  • you video is realy cute ;)

  • no prob ;)

  • yaay i like this vid, i'm gonna try one <3 loved the commentary *soooo funnyyy* yaaa!

  • Putting a bead on the knot, that's a good idea!

  • Thanks. I also enjoyed the Thelonious Monk music on each part.

  • thanks for this posting! i wish i could see more of what you were doing (camera angles was a little off). can you demonstrate some variations on the stitching (to make it more of a design on the spine)? thanks again - this was very helpful.

  • Great Job!!! Love the video!!! Perfect... One question... The Music? Was it from the cd titled Elevator Music for book binding? Lol all in all great video!!! Love your personality! Your allot of fun! A little corny but fun and interesting!

  • i am not into bookbinding atm, but i just wanted to say: you have one of the most well-paced, tutorial voices/narrations i've ever seen in any tutorial video... you'd make an excellent instructor for anything you know well

  • I like it

  • Thanks!

  • to close it you can you Velcro of a bottom of somthing.

Anyway i love the book love it!

  • Que lindas manos me encantan, puedo saber de ti

  • VEry informative and I like how you used good vocab like signature and awl:P

  • Thanks for posting this, great ideas. I have the same problem with those clips and they aren't so bad if you fold the wings down flat to your paper ;) Please can you put the camera higher so what you are doing stays in shot as your ideas are fab and I'd love to see more videos if you get the chance to make some more.

  • Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I've learned some things from you which weren't taught in my class.

  • yay! have fun!
