My 97 Venture will turn 170.000 miles by the end of this week. I,ve had it now for 7 years. It blew one head gaskets on mothers day weekend ( My teenage son must have been doing burn out at school with it that friday or something ). I personaly did the repairs my self for under 300 dollars. **** If you have no mechanical experience do not attempt to do this yourself ****.
Our 2002 Venture we have has not been driven a lot of times, but over 1,000 times, I would say, and it's only got, I think, 48,500 or something miles.
My 02 has 123,000 and I was doing 1,000 a week on her until I got a new job that is now max of 200 miles a week so my venture will be around longer, it tows nice and can haul firewood without the seats in it, works like a truck would and can still haul 7 people
I have an 2001 Chevy Venture long wheelbase with 165,000 K on the clock. It has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. I may never sell it since it isn't worth much, other than to me, and I know I wouldn't be as happy with an expensive, newer model.
@Rphasmid I now have 135,000 miles on mine. Shooting for 200k. Still runs great. I'd love a Suburban or HHR, but can't justify it as long as the ol' Venture is rolling along.
@Rphasmid Our 2003 Venture LT has 263,000 miles on it, it it has had no problems what so ever durring that entire time. We said we were going to get rid of it when it got to 200K, but it still looks good, drives good, and runs good. At this point we are just going to keep it untill something goes wrong, which probably wont be for a while. A testament to what proper and regular maintenance can do to any car!
@obc1500 I have an '03 venture LS . My mom gave this car to me after she bought a new, I have 204,485 on it, the trannny is slipin' a bit, but otherwise, it's a decent car.
We have a 2001 chevy venture. It's one of the most unreliable cars my family has ever owned. Well and our ford windstar was pretty bad too. Yeah the van has so many problems. intake manifold gasket having problems. and so many more! getting rid of the junk box soon! Ooh and it only has 125,000 miles on it.
The only problem related to the lifters that I know of is the "lifter tap" on a cold start.. which both of my 3100s have had... the 99 for 180k+ miles and the 03 with almost 100k. I've heard 3400s make the same noise, there are a couple posted here on Youtube. I haven't heard of (or had a problem with) anything about the camshafts on my 3100s or anyone elses... so I can't comments, but I'm not concerned. Both of my 3100s have run like a top and have been exceptionally reliable.
the 3100 and 3400 are pretty much the same motors... very few differences outside of liter size and performance numbers. In fact, looking at a 3400 in the van, I can't tell it apart from the 3100 in my Malibu...save for the "4" instead of the "1" on the cover. Let's not split hairs here...
3100/3400 engines are extremely reliable engines from GM. Everyone raves about the 3800, but IMO, the 3100/3400s are just as reliable. I've had this engine in both a 99 Malibu (180k+ miles when totaled) and now in my current 2003 Malibu. Get those gaskets replaced and get rid of that Dex-cool and that engine will last you several hundred thousand more miles...
Since my profession is in the automotive repair field. I stick to chevys not that Toyotas, Subarus nor any other brand are any worse or better. My
1st car was a 77 Dodge Aspen,2nd 72 VW Karmanguia,3rd 80 VW Rabbit,4th 86 Dodge Colt,5th 88 Mercury Cougar,6th 87 Chevy Astro and currently a 97 Venture & Astro. Subarus are reliable so are hondas & toyotas...
There actually very reliable, seeing as they share the engine and transmission from the Grand Prix platform. There is a known gasket issue, when the owner, refuses/neglects to check his radiator fluid.
Easy way around it, flush out the old green stuff, put in the new Dexron, youll never see the issue.
nice van buddy! I have a 93 voyager.

@DemonOfRazgriz89 It was a 2001 Venture. (I say "was," since I traded in this year at 150,000 miles. Replaced it with a 2011 Toyota Sienna.)

the main difference , it's the camshaft and the lifters .and that's become a problem on the 3.1 l.

I would rather have a Subaru or Toyota over a chevy.
