  • Alex Chilton RIP

  • awesome live performance. one of my all time favorite songs. Manny Charlton [ from the 70s rock band NAZARETH ] has a great version of this song as well.

  • They should have hired some Trombones for this tune.

  • Alex always had the voice.....and as for dan, check out his cd Do Right Man....as for me Im from memphis and yes Alex sang the Letter, such a powerful voice at a young age....

  • Good to see Alex as playful as he was at 16! Love it !

  • 0 Marked as spam Reply | Spam Who's voice do you think is on the original cut??? Honestly...

I believe it's Dan Penns's voice in the first cut of The Letter and Cry. Dan also co-wrote with Spooner Oldham, both from Muscle Shoals, Cry Like A Baby for the BT's Check Dan out on youtube,,see what ya think.

  • From Dan Penn himself in his bio: Everybody thinks I coaxed [Alex Chilton] into doing a lot of vocal tricks, but its not true—he just had it. The only thing I ever told that young man to do was sing aeroplane instead of airplane on The Letter..." So no he didn't sing it himself.

  • ok i know you've already received like 511 answers to this one, but i just have a link- if you check out clip no 5 from the bottom on the right side of this channel (similar videos thingie on the right side of this video) and press it (it should say B O X T O P S from 'beyondthebeat' and be 2.06 min long) you'll hear it's live and from that era (rarely enough) and that alex is the one who sang the original

  • I saw the Box Tops at DAR Constitution Hall in about 1968 with Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. Boxtops were amazing, then again so was Gary Puckett

  • I was there also! We must be old!.....lol

  • Omg how could u say its not the same voice on the original cut of the letter.I still have my 45 and gee it sure sounds the same..,lmbo

  • Alex did the original vocal, view the 1967

live clip, BOXTOPS, thanks to beyondthebeat Chilton does the gruff lead

in NY Club, The Bitter End. He covers the

missing plane/strings at the end with Ohs. Enjoy, before the smokes took the

    R&B vocals.

  • That's alex's voice here but not the voice on the original cut of "The Letter"

  • For some reason the entire band disagrees with you...

  • Who's voice do you think is on the original cut??? Honestly...

  • Dan Penn from Muscle Shoals, AL..Also co-wrote with Spooner Oldham, Cry Like a Baby for the BT's. There are many who think this is the voice in Cry and Letter. Check Dan out on youtube

  • btw he seems to have the same jacket in both those clips =)

  • Thomas Boggs, one of the originals from Memphis, TN, died recently.

  • Sweeeeeet. I'd do him in heartbeat.

  • Haha who are you talking about doing?
