it is kind of weird seeing Mat Saleh (aka White People, aka Ang Mohs) performing silat... they make it look weird... i always love to watch Malay Malaysians or Singaporeans or Indonesians performing or sparing silat :)

I would like to say that islam and sufism in particular is the spiritual sourcing for the art of silat that I teach... but just as the science of sufism and tassawuf preceded the term so did the spiritual sourcing for silat... in the Old Testament David (as) was dancing for God Almighty and the scriptures say the angels came down and inspired him in that dance.. this is the angelic invocation of power the sourcing for all war arts
I got a love/hate relationship w/ Silat...I truly love some of the combat techniques, but I hate the posturing. I guess all martial arts eventually go more to the art and less to the martial.

Salaam Alaikum, silat is not a martial art... true silat will never be seen on the web, its a sacred way of life, a door to the infinite... the key to enlightenment.. true silat cannot be captured by film or by the physical eyes... its far too fast... as lightning bolts cannot be broken down by our vision just felt by the victim of its power, true silat is murder to the unbeliever... but to the believer its the salvation of divine intervention... see the Holy Quran 2nd chapter verses 255-256...

Please take my comment as a positive critics. Learn from the Originals. U will know the secret. Gimme a Ring.That move is ok to defend your self in the street. But remember - Silat is an arts and not to fight. However , when you are pushed to the wall - Silat secret will , by itself - BE SEEN. Press my Number.

For me, silat WILL NEVER a martial art. Yes, it is a martial art, but... I just don't know how to explain. Haha! Okay, you cannot be korean by learning TKD.. or u'll never being japanese by learning karate. But you WILL FEEL being Malay/Indonesian by learning silat. Silat = MA + spiritual + music + clothing etc...
Actually, silat is a martial art first. Then, it collaborated into dance such as Minang Dance. Even the javanese dance had Silat step but they do it slowly. And like kungfu, there are many types of Silat. For example, in Central Java, there are type of silat that used to be used by princess or king daughter.
Salaam Alaikum, peace be with you... as a teacher of this art I wish to clarify something... silat means moving as lightning... only beginners lack speed and power... advanced silat is a blurr for there's no defense against what cannot be seen... they are slow so you can see... inspired movement runs on spirit power... faster than the body can move on its own
I appreciate you clarifying the meaning of silat. I've done martial arts for several years and out of the ones I have studied, the most value has come from pentjak silat and ninpo. I'm still a beginner at silat but can tell that it's highly effective...none of my moves worked on my teacher and you're right..it IS a blurr! lol ...i'm hoping to get at that level at some point. Where do you teach??
if i look at silat harimau, I think it looks like jujitsu... and a bit aikido
