Er, calm down, aagjmb ! I'm not correcting the wonderful Bernstein. In your innocence, your kneejerk, defensive reaction is to express outrage that I am somehow criticising Lennie's interpretation. I am not at all. I think it's one of the most electrifying performances I've ever heard- it's up there with the Solti and Rattle, in my books. But I am a university - educated musician who has a special interest in early 20th music, including Mahler. Just saying the girls fucked up there!
OOps ! Listen to .6.29, just after the 3- note tympani passage. The two soprani hold on to that top 'c' a bar too long and end up completing their phrase ON TOP OF the boys singing' Deo sit gloria' ! Then freeze it at 6. 34 and you see Lenny grab their eyes, as if to say '' Wait for us, girls ! Lets all arrive on the home key together now, shall we??"
Great performance with the release of Bernstein's where his soul resonates in full, the soul which remains the same as in life ... I don't know whether you understand - for me it's pure pleasure for my ears as well ... my eyes- he, his life and the real genius for me unmoved, even after his death, which is the best proof of this video and interpretation of Mahler, a composer whose music he was definitely the best understood ... Ah, I love Lenny !
If only Edda Moser wasn't singing....I think her voice is a bit too light for this piece. Blegen sounds great! What a fantastic performance overall! Thanks for posting!
paulybarr -The gal in white was giving lenny the eye all though the piece. A total waste of her time of course.

@paulybarr Who the f*** are you to correct Bernstein?

With all the advancements in recording and technology, and the dozens of recordings of the 8th out there, Bernstein's is still the benchmark.

I heard Julia Varady as the principal soprano. That was a sound. The climaxes hit you between the eyes.

Yeah, that's what I've always thought about Moser in this performance.
