I had never heard this song. I really miss Layne his amazing voice was so unique and still other musicians try to sound like him but, the song that reminds me so much of Layne is "Don't Follow" Oh my God i really want to cry with that song......RIP Layne
Its true Layne's lyrics touched so many people and his example and legacy will live on in his music, his music got me through some hard times and I will always be an AIC fan for life.
It's so nice to see someone love Layne just as, much as I do. My heart still bleeds for this amazing man. R.I.P. Layne. Your wings are no longer denied!
Nice! Does anyone know the lyrics or where I can find them? I was thinking the other day about AIC Greatest Hits.... how can you decide what to put on it??? Even the songs that aren't as popular are still killer!! They will always be my favorite band of all time and my current favorite song is It Aint Like That Anymore . When I change my favorite song it will be just to another AIC song. Props to Staind for this, but Aaron doesn't have the sharpness of the knife like Layne had.
I remember when Nirvana, AIC, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and many, many others REAL bands were on every possible TV channel, in every newspaper - I was a small boy in that times but this music was so.... so TRUE, REAL, STRAIGHT FROM HEART. - not like thesedays. THANK YOU SEATTLE FOR MY LIFE PATH :) sorry for my english, I'm from Poland
He would be 44 today. Rest In Peace brother! Hope you're somewhere jamming with Andy, Kurt, Shannon, Brad, Dime, Jimi, John, Janis, Brian, Bon, Bonzo, Jim, Pete Ham, Moony, Kristin,Etc...
@richmondfan7 The childish bickering as to who is better is a stain on both their legacies. They are both great figures in music history. And you have just disrespected them both.
@richmondfan7 in all honesty you can't compare the two, both were grunge but they had their own unique twist on it ya know, bothe were great artist but i appreciate layne more so i agree with ya
@richmondfan7 "Kurt and I weren't the closest of friends, but I knew him well enough to be devastated by his death. For such a quiet person, he was so excited about having a child." - Layne Staley
I don't think even Layne would agree with your comment.

I once sat with a shotgun pointed at my head in my garage when i was 16. Layne's words saved my life. To make a long story short, 'Nutshell' was playing and somehow convinced me that my life was worth something, if not to others, to myself. That single-handedly changed my life. I may not be the wealthiest person I know, but I know I have changed a few lives...due to words I found in a singer since past...May you find the peace you didn't find in this lifetime, in the next, Layne
I could never have dreamed of meeting you, Layne, but I love you. Suffering depression without Alice in Chains would have meant certain death for me. Layne inspired me to pick up a guitar, write my darkest thoughts poetically, play unconventional progressions, and even though he wasn't great at guitar, he went on stage and played the hell out of it, which made me feel comfortable with it. The first song I ever learned was Nutshell, which was the reason I started playing to begin with.
My first son will be named Layne Thomas, after you. You deserve to be glorified as a legend as much as Jimmy Hendrix or Elvis Presley. Music heals the heart, but you saved people's lives with yours. Its a shame it couldn't save you, but perhaps people needed a martyr to understand the pain drugs can put them through. A modern Jesus is what you are, and I will never let it go as long as I live.
@FrostmourneFK I love your idea. :) I have a nephew named Layne. He's the coolest kid you'd ever want to meet. Sweet, sassy, sublime, sour, sarcastic and smart. He's 8 years old. My favorite nephew for a lot of reasons! :)
Its a shame they all have to die. Everyone (ok not everyone) whos still around is usher and britney spears and those who are 15 now, like me - and were stupid enough to miss aic in vienna - like me - will never get to see them. But it wouldnt be the same without layne staley anyways.
Strange, it really sounds like alice in some way----
I first heard Would back when i was 12 years old. I'm 28 now and i still love Alice in Chains and always will. Layne's voice could touch the deepest places in your soul. RIP Layne.
Amazing tribute! Beautiful song! Miss you Layne! AIC is one of my all-time favorite bands! I've always been a fan of Staind, but I have gained so much for respect for them. R.I.P Layne!
I was born in 72 and that made me a true product of the 80's hair bands witch I still love to this day..By the time 91-92 rolled around the the glam bands had become way over polished and had lost so much of the sleaze that made that era great..when AIC and others hit the scene they quickly became one my favorites..I know where I was the day SRV was killed..the day the towers fell and the day Layne was found dead..R.I.P Layne U live thru all of us that love your music and will never forget

@headbanger270 isnt it weird how layne died on kurt cobaine or kobains 8th anniversery almost for the same reason as layne died except kurt used a shotgun and layne had an overdose..
this is truly beautiful! Layne was one of my favorite artists of all time and I truly miss his talent. Thanx for the share. Thanx Aaron Lewis for recognizing one of the greatest mega powerful voices and talent in music
It fucking sucks being a 15 year old 90s rocker nowadays. Music has gone to shit and I always tell myself I was born 15 years late. Layne and Kurt are my biggest idols and I just wish I could have seen them.
RIP Layne...we were born the same year (myself in November) we would have both been 44 this year. I started listening to AIC in college, own every AIC album there is in some form or fashion, even found an old recording of "blue"...first time I heard this song I was driving home from work and had to pull off the road, couldn't see through the tears. Miss you my friend, this is a nice tribute and I give Aaron Lewis much props for using just enough of the AIC sound to make this a fitting tribute.
God I was 11 when I was introduced to Alice in Chains and Laynes amazing voice. I would love to see a concert with him but sadly he is gone :*( My brother looks kinda like him though :/ anyways RIP Layne and this song is so amazing
I am 14 and aic is my favorite band of all time i wish layne was still alive he was the greTest wish he wouldve stayed alive long enough for me to see a concert R.I.P. Layne. Aarons daughter was born on the same day layne died which was the 8th anniversy of kurt cobains death
@Headbanger270 ...same here, man...i remember getting into grunge at 14 too.i started with Nirvana but then when i got my 1st alice in chains album i was like fuck nirvana...AiC is definetly the heaviest of all the early 90;s seattle bands....im still amazed by laynes vocals even to this day..sick harmonies on the dirt album
of course it sounds like aic cause its in their honor manly layne i mane is it any better than the new aic come on its music Jam Fucker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in my darkest hours, I rediscovered AIC. It was the MTV Unplugged session. It somehow helped me to turn something bad, sad into something of a learning experience, something poetic, artistic, . . . . I can truly say Layne saved my life*** may you rest in peace now my brother . . . .

Aaron Lewis is a fantastic vocalist much like Layne was. I used to watch Layne back before Staind got big in West Springfield. Did covers and he used to do unbelievable Tool covers.
i also named my son after layne he was like no other, painfully beautiful was his voice and so many have taken away something from him i did i can hear him sometimes in my own music so i guess thats really what its all about influence every artist has there place of inspiration and layne was a big influence on me...
Alice in Chains was my favorite band of the 90's... without Layne, AIC isn't the same.. it wasn't the voice of a saint, but it was as close as rock will ever come.. RIP
I don't care much for this song, but damn, he really was a big fan of Layne to write these lyrics.
Normally tribute songs are more symbolic and can be open to interpretation, but this guy just lays it on the line. Respect to him, he just about reflects everything Layne meant to all of us (AIC fans).
I love this song. I think this is a good tribute song, very dignified and for those who think it sounds too much like Alice in Chains, I think that is a good thing, hence a tribute song.
that was a very sad day when he died. i was on my way to work when this came over the radio and blew me away. way too young and talented to have died. however if you knew just how bad his demons were you would understand alice in chains lyrics if you dont already. he didnt glorify his drug abuse, he wrote his lyrics to deter kids from doing them and ultimatly ending up the way he did. he is my favorite musician to the point where i named my son after him. god bless you layne.
@deacongowan thats touching to hear. If I ever have a son, I hope to name him after him as well. He truly was an inspiration, and has forever made an impact on my soul.
Layne Staley had his problems...obviously. But in all he cared about the youth of the nation and he had a certain understanding of peoples problems and through his music, many people were lifted- given a chance to find light. Of course others may have been brought into it through his lyrics; but Layne would never have meant for that to happen. I respect him and disrespect anyone who would ridicule him. R.I.P Layne Staley. Heaven Beside You.
Almost 8 years ago, still feels like he here sometimes...but his voice is gone. Thank you Layne for giving us your gift and sacrificing yourself for us!
we started a facebook group in hopes to get enough layne fans together to demand a special in his name. Requesting help from those that loved layne to DEMAND he gets his honors & respect he deserves! Come chat with us and help with any suggestions you may have at

ill agree with you in this song they do sound similar but that of course was prollly intention since its a tribute to layne haha . but other than that id say stainds sound and songs are pretty original in my opinion anyways
@Headbanger270 Yeah but you can tell they tried to pull of that whiney, double vocal sound that alice in chains always had. which sounds fucking sweet with layne and cantrell. this versions okay.
@KnightsFootball46 I disgaree. Although Alice in Chains has their own trademark, unique harmonies, it is not uncommon for a song to have two part harmonies. Even though it may speculate that they tried on account of the title, (because Layne was well-known for harmonies with Jerry and vice-versa), it does not necessarily mean that they tried to do that because of that sole reason. Also, the only time the harmonies were "whiney" were the much later years of AiC. No whiney vocals are present here.
@KnightsFootball46 If it's a tribute to layne, why scrutinize it? Perhaps it's to remind us of him, or to bring back memories of hearing certain AIC songs for the first time... like Brush Away. That one sticks out most in my mind.
@pnutluv388 maybe possibly ever once consider that aaron made the song sound like this to pay TRIBUTE to layne and the AIC sound since thats what layne was about and the bands sound layed the groundwork for grunge music.. jw if maybe you ever thought that
@pnutluv388 Maybe the point of this song was to have an AIC sound, both with the guitar and the harmonies. I dont view it as a rip off by any means. Staind (or Lewis at least) was obviously strongly driven and influenced by Alice, so whats wrong with sounding like them??
Wonderful

The beginning of this song sounds so much like AIC
redbull8382 11 months ago
RIP Layne...we were born the same year (myself in November) we would have both been 44 this year. I started listening to AIC in college, own every AIC album there is in some form or fashion, even found an old recording of "blue"...first time I heard this song I was driving home from work and had to pull off the road, couldn't see through the tears. Miss you my friend, this is a nice tribute and I give Aaron Lewis much props for using just enough of the AIC sound to make this a fitting tribute.

in my darkest hours, I rediscovered AIC.

Yes Kurt and Layne died on the same day and Aarons daughter was born on the day Layne died.

Alice in Chains was my favorite band of the 90's... without Layne, AIC isn't the same.. it wasn't the voice of a saint, but it was as close as rock will ever come.. RIP

Never really cared for Staind (other than Mud Shovel) but respect to those who have respect. RIP Layne.

I don't care much for this song, but damn, he really was a big fan of Layne to write these lyrics.
Normally tribute songs are more symbolic and can be open to interpretation, but this guy just lays it on the line. Respect to him, he just about reflects everything Layne meant to all of us (AIC fans).
Rest in peace now Layne, you'll never fade...

@MsBrit78 i completely agree. i don't personally like stained, but this song makes me have a lot of respect for them.

I love this song. I think this is a good tribute song, very dignified and for those who think it sounds too much like Alice in Chains, I think that is a good thing, hence a tribute song.

and i was wondering whose chold was born to the person layne helped the day he died???? if u know.
bartowawt 1 year ago
didn't cobain and staley die on the same day eight years apart?
bartowawt 1 year ago
that was a very sad day when he died. i was on my way to work when this came over the radio and blew me away. way too young and talented to have died. however if you knew just how bad his demons were you would understand alice in chains lyrics if you dont already. he didnt glorify his drug abuse, he wrote his lyrics to deter kids from doing them and ultimatly ending up the way he did. he is my favorite musician to the point where i named my son after him. god bless you layne.
deacongowan 1 year ago 23
@deacongowan thats touching to hear. If I ever have a son, I hope to name him after him as well. He truly was an inspiration, and has forever made an impact on my soul.

He's gone...But he's still here forever.
As Johnny Cash is to your 'pa, Layne Staley is to me.
captain0vell 1 year ago
Layne Staley had his problems...obviously. But in all he cared about the youth of the nation and he had a certain understanding of peoples problems and through his music, many people were lifted- given a chance to find light. Of course others may have been brought into it through his lyrics; but Layne would never have meant for that to happen. I respect him and disrespect anyone who would ridicule him. R.I.P Layne Staley. Heaven Beside You.

The lyrics to this song are really good, but I think they are ripping off the AIC sound too much
pnutluv388 1 year ago
@pnutluv388 Actually AiC and Staind's music are quite different. Truly the closest thing is the vocals.
Headbanger270 1 year ago 3
@pnutluv388
ill agree with you in this song they do sound similar but that of course was prollly intention since its a tribute to layne haha . but other than that id say stainds sound and songs are pretty original in my opinion anyways
domrocker67 1 year ago
@Headbanger270 Yeah but you can tell they tried to pull of that whiney, double vocal sound that alice in chains always had. which sounds fucking sweet with layne and cantrell. this versions okay.
KnightsFootball46 1 year ago 4
@KnightsFootball46 I disgaree. Although Alice in Chains has their own trademark, unique harmonies, it is not uncommon for a song to have two part harmonies. Even though it may speculate that they tried on account of the title, (because Layne was well-known for harmonies with Jerry and vice-versa), it does not necessarily mean that they tried to do that because of that sole reason. Also, the only time the harmonies were "whiney" were the much later years of AiC. No whiney vocals are present here.
Headbanger270 1 year ago
@KnightsFootball46 If it's a tribute to layne, why scrutinize it? Perhaps it's to remind us of him, or to bring back memories of hearing certain AIC songs for the first time... like Brush Away. That one sticks out most in my mind.
FrostmourneFK 1 year ago
@pnutluv388 maybe possibly ever once consider that aaron made the song sound like this to pay TRIBUTE to layne and the AIC sound since thats what layne was about and the bands sound layed the groundwork for grunge music.. jw if maybe you ever thought that
kimber40 1 year ago
@kimber40 actually after I wrote that comment, I had the same thought, that maybe Aaron did it that way as a tribute.
pnutluv388 1 year ago
@pnutluv388 Maybe the point of this song was to have an AIC sound, both with the guitar and the harmonies. I dont view it as a rip off by any means. Staind (or Lewis at least) was obviously strongly driven and influenced by Alice, so whats wrong with sounding like them??
90smusicfanatic 1 year ago
@pnutluv388
I'm pretty sure that was the point...
WarmothGuitarist 1 year ago
@pnutluv388 It's not meant as a ripoff, it's meant as a tribute.
direweaseltjw 1 year ago
@pnutluv388 The point of the song was a tribute man, not to replicate, reproduce a sound, or impersonate. Purely tribute. Come one man.
alexwillhite7034 1 year ago 2
@pnutluv388 does it really matter its a tribute song to layne
Blackhawk5656 11 months ago
@pnutluv388 I like it. It fits because the sound is for a tribute to Layne.
